Vikings absolutely wore chainmail during raids. They knew how to do proper maintenance on they're weapons and armor. If the chainmail would rust, then wouldn't their weapons as well? It's not rocket science. During the battle of Stamford bridge, it's literally noted that the English caught Harald Hardrada's forces off guard, them having left their armor at the longboats at the shore. Obviously most people who went viking would usually just wear a tunic, but career vikings, guys who did it for most of their lives, or lords, would more than likely have chainmail.

Makes sense. Although they didn’t seem to attack armies or warriors. They’d go and raid helpless villagers and even monks and stuff. Ppl who wouldn’t look to fight back. Most Vikings preyed upon weak ppl and when going up against armies they really didn’t have the advantage their legends say they did
@laurakastrup2 жыл бұрын
They did not wear chainmail, no actual Viking burial site of warriors has chain mail in them nor are chainmail referenced in any writing we have from either victims or allies of the Vikings, nor are there any legends saying chain mail or any armour for that matter

Most did not just have a broad axe, people had to buy their weapons or steal them from enemies. They had whatever they could afford, most didn't even have any armor or a shield. Ulfbert swords are something that you should have talked about instead of a axe. To this day nobody can recreate the ulfbert sword. The raiders had to be a certain age, have a heir, and not have a farm or important service to provide to the clan.

Im 3 minutes into the video and already have 3 things to correct you on. Firstly, only tyr is the God of war and justice, odin and thor have different domain. Secondly, berzerkers were a rarity on the battlefield because they disrupted formations that were essential to viking warfare such as the shield wall and typically would die quickly anyway (its common sense if you understand historical warfare). Thirdly, vikings absolutely wore chainmail! Armor can be maintained, the only reason not everyone had it is because mail is expensive. You can bet most vikings atleast had gambeson or layered clothing of some sort for perfection, enough layers can stop a sword. Oh and BTW swords were also rare becuase of how expensive they were.

I cringe at the depiction of the battle axe. Just look up Dane axes and you'll know that they look nothing like that! Two sided axes have never been found among vikings. They existed as heavy duty wood cutter tools in Europe and in a much smaller form as war axes in India, though most of them were more ceremonial...

There are some real pieces of information in this video but also a lot of common misconceptions and misinformation about vikings. The chainmail thing for instace, vikings absolutely used them and they don't rust when oiled. It's just that they were pretty expensive back in the Day and many vikings couldn't afford them. If Hardrada won at Stamford Bridge, who would win between him and William the Conqueror?
@brandonhallam513 жыл бұрын
Probably the Normans
@itarry43 жыл бұрын
The Norman's the vikings would never have made the forced march that Harold did to get there in time to stop them by a hill near battle. Yes named after the fact. Nor would he have been able to pick up the number of warriors that Harold did on the way. Harold actually left most of his army behind and just took his most loyal and best with him then replaced most of the army on the very fast march South. So by the time the Vikings got there the Normans would have been well fortified and ready holding the best ground. Then also remember that the Normans were from Vikings who took West France and made it home so they actually used both the French/British fighting style with a bit of Viking thrown in as well as a huge Cavelry.

Nice video, but the "not wearing chainmail" is false a little bit because the danish nobilty and ruling class wore chainmail over a gambeson or kyortel as it was referred to by the vikingr You were right on most of that but, they did wear chainmail just not too often, and almost exclusively the wealthy scandinavians.
@alec3492273 жыл бұрын
