Private Wojtek was a Polish soldier unlike any other. Not only was he huge, he was covered in thick fur. Private Wojtek and later Corporal Wojtek was in fact, a bear! Rescued as a young cub Wojtek was adopted by the 2nd Transport Company and became one of the men. He took to the soldier life well and fit right in. He shared showers and provisions and performed tasks during battle. When the Polish II Corps finally arrived in Egypt they were reorganized to fight alongside the British. Among the changes the 2nd Transport Company became the 22nd Artillery Company and they were assigned to join the Italian campaign, including Wojtek. During the battle the bear carried heavy crates of ammunition helping to secure victory at Monte Cassino. Wotjek didn’t see combat again and would retire to the Edinburgh Zoo after the unit was brought to the UK for demobilization. He would often be visited by journalists and former Polish soldiers, who would sometimes sneak in treats for him. He would also be a repeat guest of a UK children's show, Blue Peter.
Corporal Wotjek lived a happy retirement before passing away at the ripe old age of 21.
10 monuments would be built in his memory across the UK and Poland.

Wojtek is probably the most famous non-fictional bear of all time. He is fondly remembered many decades later for his contribution to the war. He is also still heavily discussed amongst Polish people to this very day. He's almost like a folk hero in some aspects.

But yeah, because some people here in Québec don’t really like war, they decided to disregard THEIR COMPATRIOTS WHO PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE AND/OR DIED SO WE WOULD BE FREE! Never heard about this fight with other bear. What i think is important too, is that Wojtek, while in the Zoo, never liked being with other bears, eventually been given his own pen. He liked humans more. Always got cheerfull hearing polish language. Oh, and oranges weren't the only thing brought by old comrades, as they would sometimes jump into his pen, to wrestle him, just like in the old days. Two fun facts: 1. Wojtek loved eating cigarettes, the were his favorite snack! And the Polish soldiers also snuck those in during their visits to the zoo. 2. Monte Casino was taken by the Polish during the 4th offensive and there is a photo of Polish soldiers lifting up the Polish flag on the mountain. It very much resembles the photo from Iwo Jima after the Americans had taken it. My grandpa told me a story that the English told the Polish soldiers to take their flag down, and put the British flag up instead, because officially the Poles were a part of the British Army. The Poles responded by immediately putting their rifles up and threatening everyone who would dare to come close. The issue needed to be resolved by the superiors of the two sides, who decided to leave the Polish flag there. Today, there is a great cemetery under monte cassino dedicated to the Polish army.

Have you got a source for #2 other than your grandpa? I know a lot about the battle and I've heard about the polish participation, one of their military songs 'czerwone maki na monte cassino' comes from it. But I've never heard a single thing about the British objecting them to using their flag when the Brits were fine with every other nation including nations of the commonwealth using theirs. If you haven't I'd suggest everyone treat it with a grain of salt. The amount of myths that have been created about WW2 by people claiming they 'were told a story about X by Mein Opa' has become so notorious it's literally a meme.

(hint for those not in the know: that's an actual thing) Polish: So now it's no longer an unit mascot: he is now officially a soldier, complete with all his paperwork. British: *You bloody SOB, do you know how much paperwork is to refuse transport for a soldier at wartime?!?* _Uh, wait one for me to recover my British composture and stiff upper lip..._ Yeah, have it your way. Welcome aboard, Private Wojtek. Not even sayoing that in jest. OK, the depiction of the British reaction was in jest, but the description wasn't.

There’s a Canadian connection to the honey-loving character brought to life by A. A. Milne. Winnie-the-Pooh was based on a real-life bear who lived in the London Zoo. He got there thanks to a Canadian soldier and veterinarian named Harry Colebourn. WW1. It all started in White River, Ontario. Harry was at a train station where he bought a little bear cub for $20. That would be about $429 in today’s dollars! He named the cub “Winnipeg Bear” after the town he grew up in. That’s where the name “Winnie” comes from, it’s actually a nickname!

It's kinda hard to provide the right environment for a bear. Whit the Polish army he had the right company ( battle hardend soldiers who can take a beating ), a lot of freedom ( he wasn't really restricted from roaming around but choose to stay near them ) and of course the fact they raised him helpt a lot too. I don't think one can provide all that to this extend.

Wojtek. I've seen several video's on this bear. And I have to say he's got to be the most unusual participant of any war in history. Great job Yarnhub you've added some new things to what I know about this bear.

The regiment changed its insignia to an image of the bear and an ammo shell and boasted that the bear was an “enlisted” soldier, giving him a rank and number. The bear’s caretakers didn’t want him to go back to Poland because they were afraid that the fledgling Soviet-controlled government would adopt the bear as a symbol for communism, which was the opposite of what those Polish troops had been fighting for.

Just brilliant - the animation, the artwork, everything. Laugh out loud funny in places too. Why is it that the best, most outrageous stories are invariably true? This, surely, has to be the best one of all.

Some things in life are timeless. Any animal stories of how they assist is always appreciated. That being said, we always appreciate hero stories of people who face insurmountable odds and triumph, even if their triumph is brief. Witold Pilecki is just such a person.
