The problem is not really that he counterattacked without orders, the problem is that it sets a bad example for other, less experienced aviators. If someone else tried to do the same thing as him, and was unsuccessful, they'd likely not be seen as a hero

He lived? After being hit with multiple large machine gun rounds from a plane, shrapnel from the bullets shredding glass and metal off the plane, and then free falling 1000’s of feet to the ground in a metal tomb? 🤯

Remember situations like Christmas 1945 and this German pilot or the American pilot who escorted the German to the ground safely. Soldiers. Humans. Don’t wana kill other people. We don’t. If you given a sane man Ann inch he will use it to avoid murdering another person. I’m Vietnam 90% of all bullets fired were intentionally above the enemies head. We don’t wMt to kill eachother. It’s harder to do than you think. It’s harder to live with than you can imagine. Remember that.

You ever think look at all those machines all those fortresses all those munitions and tech. What if we spent all that energy feeding hungry people or building houses? Did we win anything?

In Russia there was nowhere to retreat, that’s what they taught us in history classes when I was little. It was really dire and every soldier and cook accepted this. Such was the need to drive fascists back. That’s why it was called the great Patriotic war for us ruskies. That’s why there are so many ww2 monuments in every Russian city, honouring these people.

My grandaddy was a gunner on the b 52's. He told me a story of gitting stuck in the bottom turet and them having to land their wheels werent working. And thinking he woud die. He was the smallest guy on the crew. He was the only man who coud fit in the bottom turet

the 109's canopy wasn't a sliding one. to open it you had to flip it to the right side and the force of the air would tear it away when one was bailing out. later models had expolsives attached which would throw the canopy clear allowing the pilot of a stricken aircraft to fall free without the trouble of opening the canopy
