Thousands of knights and ordinary people took the cross and marched East. Over the next two hundred years the Christian armies attempted to recover Palestine from Islamic rule. But conquering these lands was easier than keeping them. What were the strategic methods employed by the Crusader states to keep hold of the Holy Land?

Question to HistoryMarche: Will you be doing a video on the strategy of the Mamluk sultan Baybars? It was Baybars who simultaneously both stopped the Mongol invasion of the western half of the middle east whilst wiping out the last remnants of the Crusader states through the astute construction of road networks, bridges and placement of spies. Amtai's book ('Mongol and Mamlukes'?) is an excellent reference for this period.

I believe the goal of the 2nd Crusade was Damascus which would have closed of the Syrian landbridge to the Muslims had it succeeded. The crusaders would only have to worry about attacks from the North(Iraq) and south(Egypt) if they took Damascus. Richard Lionheart also believed that taking Cairo was a far better goal than Jerusalem since taking Cairo would cripple the Mamluk's powerbase whereas Jerusalem was just inconsequential to the war, but he never got the support for it.
@starcapture30402 жыл бұрын
Damascus was and still one of the most strategic cities geographically. who controls damascus can control all routes trad and militaristically around the whole region. their strategy to take damascus was the correct one but it was too late for them to implement in that situation when Muslims started to unifay. their attack of damascus made muslims unifay more.

I am interested on how the crusaders treated the Muslims inhabitants in there realm. Were they second class citizens or were they chased off the land to make place for Christians only?
@vidkit35952 жыл бұрын
They said in the videos that the Natives ( Muslims, Jews and most likely Christians) were driven away from the cities and that the Crusaders took their place, they brought European Christians ( Catholics I guess) to settle for free land. Also the first Crusaders murdered a lot of Muslims and I believe Jews in Jerusalem.
@StrategyStuff2 жыл бұрын
The Crusaders installed a pure Christian (probably pure Catholic) elite at the top of their realms, but their regimes were still fundamentally feudal and so there was room for Muslims to manage their own affairs locally, so long as they paid the requisite dues to their lord. Some Frankish agricultural settlement occurred but most of the countryside would still have been populated mainly by Muslim peasants, for whom a Christian lord was probably not that different from a Muslim one.

If European leaders were more intelligent and truly believers in their religious cause, perhaps the whole Levant would be Christian today. They had an important advantage, which is that most of the inhabitants of the Levant (natural Syria) were Christians ,but they belonged to Syriac Orthodox Church and Eastern Orthodox Church, so the extremist Crusaders did not benefit from them. On the contrary, the barbaric and violent invasions and campaigns of extermination carried out by the Crusaders made all the local Christians alienated from them. In addition, the Islamic authorities increased their Islamic firmness and increased restrictions on Christians. This eventually led to the fact that most Syrian Christians converted to Islam.

Sadly there were huge mistakes about who were Zengis and Saladin, a very good channel like HistoryMarche should do more research than repeating wrong English records. First of all Zengi dynasty was a Turkish dynasty and they were Atabeys (Kinda Duke) of Seljuk empire not independent at all. İmâdüddin Zengî died shortly after capturing Edessa while Saladin was 9 years old and Nûreddin Mahmud Zengî (Not Nur ad-din) greatly expanded his Atabeylik (Duchy) with Islamist and anti-crusader policies. Those lands were vast majority Arabic so it was quite natural for a Turkish ruler to adopt such policies in order to control Arabic majority. Saladin's father Necmeddin Eyyub and uncle Esedüddin Şirkuh were serving İmâdüddin then his son Nûreddin as government officials and commanders. Especially his uncle Esedüddin was a great general and commanding armies for Zengis. There was quite mistrust between Shia Fatimids and Sunni Arabs and Turks even if Fatimids requested aid from Zengis sometimes, in fact Fatimids requested aid from even crusaders against Zengis once. So Nûreddin launched three expeditions into Egypt for preventing crusader capturing those lands and replacing Fatimids if necessary. All expeditions were commanded by Esedüddin Şirkuh who always demanded his nephew Saladin coming with him but Saladin wasn't interested becoming a soldier rather wanted to become an Islamic scholar, luckly he could be convinced with such important mission and his uncle. At third one after crusader army was defeated Fatimids made Şirkuh their grand vizier as a good will gesture to Zengis and recognizing their superiority. However only three monts later Şirkuh died and Saladin became grand vizier of Fatimids who would abolish Fatimids in time and establish his own country. Saladin remained loyal to Nûreddin until his death in 1174 while his son İsmail was only 11 years old. So Zengi Atabeylik/Duchy suddenly became a target for other Atabeys/Beys and local Arabic rulers because a 11 years old boy couldn't do much to defend those large lands. This is the point Saladin stepped in and married Nûreddin's widow wife and İsmail's mother while annexing most of Zengi territory and leaving İsmail Mosul and surronding areas under his protection...
@ggoddkkiller13422 жыл бұрын
@KaZee123 Zengis always used Atabey title which without any question would prove they were a part of Seljuk empire not independent at all while you ''historians'' could still claim they had their own state, care to explain how exactly? I guess you have no idea in Seljuk nomadic system all Atabeys were always free to do whatever they want until Seljuk sultan summons them directly. Even in that case Atabeys could refuse to join offensive wars, however they had to join defensive wars which was always making defensive Seljuk armies much larger and one of reasons how Seljuks could win in Manzikert. This weak centralization allowed Seljuks to increase their manpower rapidly as a Turkish Bey from Central Asia could raise an army and join Seljuks for raiding rich Byzantine. However nomadic system also caused huge problems like never ending succession wars and eventually the empire collapsed because of this weak centralization...
