The original song was a popular Southern church hymn called 'Glory, Glory." After John Brown's botched revolt at Harper's Ferry, some radicals took the hymn and inserted what is known as "John Brown's Body." Later, this version again emerged to mock Southerners using their own music. Most Northerners fought not because they wanted to end slavery, but because they hated Southerners - at least the idea of them. A book about the soldiers who fought the war, "Attack and Die" claims that by the end of the war, the soldiers of both sides had gained respect for one another and were ready to live in peace. The civilian populations, however, remained as resentful and hateful as they were in 1861.

Patriotic song or religious song? It seems a church hymn
@TheT-90thatstaresintoyoursoul Жыл бұрын
Patriotic. Was written as a rewrite of the civil war song "John Browns Body" as a more "proper" alternative than signing about a dead guy rotting in the grave, not that his significance should be overlooked. Often mistaken for a Church hymn due to the religious nature, although one must remember religion was still very prominent and followed at the time compared to nowadays. Although one section from it is missing here: "I have seen a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel "As ye deal with my contemnors, so with you my grace shall deal" Let the Hero born of woman crush the serpent with his heel, since god is marching on!" The Line "Let us live to make men free" can also be "Let us die to make men free" depending on if it's at peace (live) or war (die).

That’s because the democrats (DEMON-crats) can’t stand to hear that our GOD IS KING. And that we LOVE GOD with ALL our heart. There is a reason why during exorcists, the pastor will say, “IN GOD’s name be gone from this person.” It physically hurts them to HEAR the word of GOD.
