You mean like how the native Americans suffered much more atrocities and still haven't been given a goddamn thing yet we're supposed to give black people something first I don't think so.. well most people don't realize is black people sold themselves into slavery that slave trade in Africa was run by black people not white people. History is very muddy and if you don't actually study it you should actually just shut the f****** up

I'd love a series on how the desertion rates increased during these final few campaigns, especially in the south. Lee was losing several thousand a month near he end I recall correctly and during Overland I think he lost 10% of his strength to desertion alone.

I'm kinda surprised the location was never renamed for a general that fought there.

This was a bloody battle at Cold Harbor. As well the battle in the wilderness. Great video. Thank you for sharing. 💯👊👍

Are there any good sources for studying Civil War entrenchments? I’d like to know the difference between breastworks and trenches, as well as knowing when each army started to employ them.

Sherman made the point very unambiguously about his Atlanta campaign that attacking dug-in infantry was anything but a good idea. It's baffling to see people who obviously aren't idiots doing this.

Yet he did the same at Kennesaw and had to be persuaded by Thomas not to keep bashing his head against that wall. Lee, Hood, Grant and Sherman they all had to learn that lesson the hard way, paid in the blood of thousands.

@paulwallis7586 it's plain to see in this video that even the soldiers weren't real keen on the idea of attacking fortified positions. How Grant lost so many men when they and their officers were suddenly and mysteriously incapable of following simple "attack at 9am" orders. An entire brigade was lost in the woods? Yeah right, more like hiding in the woods.😄 I really don't blame them though. I'm not sure I could be brave to charge into that mess either.

"Grant never faced an opponent like Lee". Ain't that the truth? Won against some pathetic losers at Fts Henry.and Donellson. Nearly got destroyed by Albert Johnson at Shiloh Church. Won Vicksburg against inept Pemberton. Accidentally beat Bragg at Chattanooga. Then became top dog and won the war by grinding Lee's army and the South(Sherman) into dust. I'm no Lost Causer, I just observe who Grant's opponents were throughout the war. Ultimately he won, ending the war, and had the unwavering support of a man i admire and respect above all others--Abraham Lincoln. Good enough for me, Grant was a hero.

Grant did beat the 2nd team. But who out west was available to fight Grant.

The CSA killed to wounded ratio seems a little unrealistic for this battle.

I always wondered why Grant did what he did at Cold Harbor. Your animated battle map helped me to understand why that battle developed the way it did. Everyone talks about Grants failure at Cold Harbor but no one talks about Lee losing 50% of his army,

And what is the value of Grant's persistence, if just comes on the bodies of his men?

It forced Lee to always be on the defensive, which meant lee never had a chance to counter attack. Also the bloody affairs were in the long run more damaging for Lee because he couldn’t replace even a small percentage of his losses
@RobertH1971

@@killertigeraceI think that’s a bit of a misnomer. Lee was able to detach forces under Early which carried out offensive actions in the Valley and up North. The stalemate between Grant and Lee certainly did not help the North politically. The war was won out West, in my opinion.

And what was the value of Lee averaging a 20% casualty rate throughout the war?

Was the Martindale seen here in the map the same general that Fitzjohn Porter tried to sack from the army due cowardice early in the war?
