Coordination was definitely a problem. Grant: we should get Warren's 5th to demonstrate against the pickets while we attack left. Meade: General Warren, we need you to pretend to attack. Warren: no thanks. I don't wanna. [insert common excuses about being vastly outnumbered, starving soldiers, lame horses, lacking ammunition, bad weather, ad nauseum]. Upton/Wright: At least you weren't stuck with 1500 Connecticut heavy artillerymen pretending to be infantry, for fks sake!"

Remember the story of the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery attack on Cold Harbor from Civil War Combat. They were inexperienced and never fired a shot in anger, yet it was their first taste of battle. They suffered for it, including their colonel who was killed.

This Cold Harbor battle is why they should have followed Upton's lead at the Mule Shoe instead of piecemeal.

Good rundown of the battle so far. I was unaware there was that much movement, or the piecemeal nature of the attack. Grant expressed real regrets about this battle later on in his life.

I just learned it is called cold harbor. All these decades I thought it was Cole harbor.
