Battle of Fort Sumter Explained (Civil War History)

The Battle of Fort Sumter just off the coast from Charleston, South Carolina is where the United States Civil War got underway. The new Confederate States of America were demanding that U.S. military bases in the south be handed over, but Lincoln and his American soldiers refused. Lincoln needed to send supplies to his troops at Ft. Sumter but wanted to avoid looking aggressive. An attack commenced and when it was over, Ft. Sumter fell to the Confederates.

Thanks for weighing in. Because I am helping my son with an assignment on the cause of the Civil War, one of the things I looked at was President Lincoln’s first inaugural address, and I was surprised to learn he was very eager to assure the southern states that there would be no war. I also came across a letter from a Soldier at Fort Sumter saying they needed more Soldiers. And that was in December 1860!

The way the federal government acquires land within a state, i.e. for its bases, is the state has to cede its land to the fed. When the south seceded, they took their land back. Also, although slavery might have been one of the reasons for secession it was all of the reasons. When Lincoln tried to relax the south by rearming he was not going to interfere the south did not jump back into the union. There were other problems that had been building.

There were other problems. But slavery was the primary reason, as stated in every letter of secession. Saying otherwise is a fallacy and rewrite of history. Full stop. Lost cause mythology. The SC was just “taking back their land” argument is obviously ludicrous from literally any legal perspective.

1. I have read that the ship that attempted to delivered food stuffs also carried 200 soldiers hidden below deck. This ship was fired upon and left the area. This happened before the Fort was fired upon. This incident did not result in a declaration of war. 2. Just prior to the civil war, the French Government had left the island of Haiti giving the slaves back their Island. The remaining French whites were slaughtered by the hundreds/thousands. White southerners out numbered two to one (4 million whites to 9 million slaves) feared the same fate if the South did not succeed and allowed the North to free the slaves.

Federal budget in 1860-61 was 80 million dollars. The federal tariffs on Southern ports were 70 million dollars. Abe wasn’t about to loose the goose that laid golden egg.
