"I have yet got four brothers and part of them will vote for you any way and if you let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you you would look a great deal better for your face is so thin. Fun fact, Grant wasn’t as much of an alcoholic as history makes him out to be. He struggled with it in his early years in the army when he was stationed on the northwest coast, but after that he was rarely drunk. His biggest addiction was actually cigars, which he smoked 3-5 a day, and that is what eventually killed him.
@rimfire82173 жыл бұрын
So he was kinda an alcoholic in his youth but eventually gave it up.
@evictionnotice13133 жыл бұрын
Basically. He was depressed and away from his family for a while which lead to him getting HELLA drunk for a WHILE, but through the rest of his life he rarely drank (though the extremely rare times he did drink, he went super overboard and would have 1-3 day binges until he got himself under control), but most of the times we hear of him drunk are lies from officers who didn’t like him, like his CO in St. Louis who was terrible at his job and Grant called him on it creating an enemy for life. But the Grant we always hear about constantly drinking is mostly just attacks on his character from military (on his side) and political rivals.

Thanks for covering Lincoln's lesser known negative traits. He was quite 'melancholic', a term used back then to describe what we would call depression now. When Lincoln and Mary Todd's engagement was "apparently" called off, several close associates of Lincoln feared his suicide. The loss of his children left mental scars along with the huge emotional burden of not only limiting the amount of American deaths but having the fate of every slave in America in his hands. It's remarkable that Lincoln was able to make it through all of that. I remember reading a book where a character gave a fake quote "I do not know if great times make great men but they can most certainly break them."
@CNep993 жыл бұрын
He was also a big jokester and also just kinda silly, and that probably helped a great deal in the last incredibly streessful years of his life. One of my favorite stories is about an officer running into Lincoln in the War Department and then begged him a thousand pardons. Abe told him one was enough and wished that his generals would change like that. But one of my favorite tender stories about him during the war was when he was visiting an army camp where he came across three kittens who he asked where their mother was and learned she had died. He then told the kittens he was happy that they weren't able to comprehend how terrible the Civil War was. It's then said he ordered that they were fed and taken care of and then he sat and pet them and listened to them purring 😭

States' rights to own slaves, their greatest source of wealth that they were heavily dependent on. We know better now, but imagine if today half the country started a civil war for robotic rights, meaning a massive cutdown or elimination of robotic workers/machines in all factories. Seems outlandish today and we can hardly imagine life without em, but who can say how people 100 years from now will see it.

@flamefromHalo6 күн бұрын
@@oliverbaksvensson1919 It is hard to make entirely direct correlations that would mirror today's society properly, but it isn't far off. Remember that humans have existed for (tens of)thousands of years, and just recently in the past several hundred have we started to extend basic rights to animals[some animals had umbrella rights but almost always by means of ownership as property, not inherent value as a sentient creature]. Compare that to our concept of AI, which has only been around for less than a century. It is possible that we may extend certain rights to things outside of our current preconceptions of sentience in the next few centuries, especially when they give such value to society.

It was always about slaves. What a lot of people miss is what each side thought the outcome should be. Initially, a lot of the North were Free Soilers- they didn’t want slavery to expand west of Texas, and wanted to keep that land for themselves with no slavery allowed. The South wanted slavery to expand westward, and even into Mexico at one point. That was the situation in 1861. By 1865, the rhetoric had changed a lot. The South was no longer fighting for the expansion of slavery, but the bare preservation of it, and the north wasn’t fighting to contain slavery, but to eradicate it.

OverSimplified made me love history, The way he explains it was fun. The cartoons really helped me understand it. Wish the Educational system in school is just like this. Some teacher need to re-think about teaching their students.

Ah yes, lets oversimplify the educational system. What could possibly go wrong!

@@TheMarkJoergensen as much as I agree with your overall point, the video is simple but very well explained ;-) I sometimes use OverSimplified for my own classes to give a general overview on an issue; granted, teaching shouldn't stop there

@@TheMarkJoergensen I don't think he meant that school should oversimplify their system but instead should explain lessons in a different way

I wish we only did history and that was watching Oversimplified.

I wish. I’ve learned more from shit like this then the boring ass lectures my profs taught me. Granted I learned quick a bit but it was always biased. Which I hate

Furthermore, are hot dogs sandwiches given it's meat in between bread? It could be argued to be a miniature sub sandwich, fo example.
