This video will cover the aftermath of the Swedish attack on Russia and the battle of Poltava ( • Battle of Poltava 1709... ), as the Carolean army continues to fight against Poland, Saxony and Russia, leading to the battle of Poltava in Gadebusch 1712.

Glad to see more videos on the more unknown battles of GNW. I want to share a personal connection to the battle of Gadebusch: One of my ancestors fought in this battle on the swedish side. As an infantry sergeant in the Dalecarlia regiment he participated in the assault on the Danish guard regiment during the most critical phase of the fighting. He survived the battle despite several wounds but later became a POW after the siege of Wismar 1716. During the prisoner transport to Russia he managed to escape and found his way home to Sweden where he took service again, helping in the defence of the swedish coast against russian attacks. He served a total of 35 years in the army before retiring. All of the above was noted in the obituary by the local parish priest upon his death in 1768. By comparing the story with surviving regimental records ive been able to confirm most of the story.

@@filipnassen9076 Or kept it floating for much longer than it should have. A much more incompetent king in warfare would probably have lost a lot of the Empire. I imagine his victories early on did give him an aura of fear. Seeing how the allied forced fled Stralsund at the sight of a smaller army is to me a sign of that. But the Swedish Empire had no population and no proper resources to uphold an Empire for long.

It's honestly what makes Carolus Rex such an interesting figure in history, in my opinion. These new cannon were the invention of the Swedish artillery officer Carl Cronstedt. Instead of being dragged into position they could actually be pushed muzzle forward by horses or men and were elevated with modern screws as opposed to wedges, but the biggest innovation were the so called "geschwinda skott" (=fast/nimble rounds), a kind of proto-cartridge that cut down on reload time. In extreme cases a gun crew could shoot up to sixteen shots a minute. This kind of firepower, great mobility and the quick and accurate firing thanks to the aiming screws made these cannon a force to be reckoned with. In a letter from Stenbock to Charles XII after the battle of Gadebusch he writes that "Next to God we have Cronstedt and his guns to thank for this victory".

@@jarogniewtheconqueror2804 These were wars in which every power in Western Europe participated. France under Louis XIV became the foremost European power during the mid 17th century. After the war of Devolution when France easily won against Spain Europe became to distrust Louis because he was a threat to the balance of power. When France attacked the Dutch Republic in 1672 William of Orange III succesfully created a coalition against France. 10 years after the peace William would again create a coalition against France and this time he and his Dutch army would invade Britain to get them in the coalition as well. The war would be a stalemate but William had succeded in ending the French expansion in Europe. 4 years later war broke out again. This time because of the Spanish succession crisis.

Allowing the Russians a port on the Baltic would be both politically and economically very costly for Sweden. With the benefit of hindsight, it would most likely have given the Swedish Empire a few more years of life, but considering the strong position Sweden was in at the time, I can understand why Charles refused. Increasing the efforts to dislodge the Russians from their conquests around the Gulf of Finland would arguably have been the way to go, rather than yoloing into the Russian interior.

if ottoman grand vizier, baltacı mehmet paşa, could execute Peter at Prut, there would be no russian empire. Peter and his entire fellow royalmen were besieged around river Prut. Baltacı Mehmet Paşa (grand vizier) accepted the bribe and did let Peter freely go with his army. When news reached İstanbul, Sultan depromoted the vizier and sent him to exile at island of Mitilini (modern day Greece).

But its not 2 great powers fighting really is it? Its tre greatpowers attacking Sweden of which two gets beaten out, the third is beaten and beaten until it manages to pull out a victory and the others join back in. I am pretty sure most danish nobles worth anything as officers would join the navy - Denmark had/have a small population but had an active navy due to the Oresund toll (taxing all ships going in/out of the baltics) - Denmark historically really often sucks at land battles.

Where Sweden also more or less sucked at naval battles.. Swedish victories at sea are few and far between. There are the twin victories at Svensksund 1790, sinking of Dannebrogen and a handfull of others, but that's it.. Denmark is the clear winner at sea there if you compare.

@@avenger6944 well VASA didn’t make it to any battle :-) never read about any epic f…up for the Denmark-Norway navy like that. - and the danish navy could almost always beat the Swedish navy - I presume they had the same low population + officers have to be Nobel problem - and of course lack of experience.

@@avenger6944 Well not really, there are several Swedish naval succeses outside of the ones you mention (especially privaters and pirate ships) and the Vasa ship is one of three of its kind and is no where near the biggest Swedish war ship up untill that time. But i totaly agree that Denmarks navy is the best. Denmark used its maritime folk in its "war fleet" while Sweden used conscripted farmboys for its war navy as all the regular "private" sailors was needed to keep the commerce fleet going. The Swedish warfleet hade therefore less skilled sailors on avredge then it's danish counterpart. However Sweden could keep its commerse going during war time while Denmark had to turn its commersial fleet in to a war fleet making the country less able to supply its economy during times of war. So yeah the Danish fleet had a higer quality of sailors and sea folk in general but the Swedish fleet was more sustainable in wartime. And Denmark has the better overall sucesses in the naval wars between the two countries through out the ages while Sweden dominates the land engagements especially after the 1600s

A treaty like that would be announced to the rest of Europe, publishing all the clauses so that the other kings and such know what the overarching political situation is. Secret clauses are not included in that publication, they're kept just between the parties of the treaty.

Denmark negotiates with Swedens German enemies to tab her in her back. - Losses catastrophically in the war of 1643-45. Denmark see that Sweden is busy fighting a war in Poland. Sees the oppurtunity for revenge and declare war. - The war of 1658 ends with the worst disaster in Danish history. Half the country is lost to Sweden. Sweden losses the insignificant battle at Fehrbellin at 1675. The world is stunned. Previously have everyone believed that the Swedish army was invincible, but now have that belief been shattered. Denmark instantly declares war. - Denmark losses the battle of Lund in 1676 and end up gaining nothing. Denmark makes a secret alliance with Russia and Saxony and declares war on Sweden. - Swedish troops lands on Danish soil near the Danish capitol, and Denmark quickly sues for peace and becomes the first country to leave the anti-Swedish coalition. @@cursedkei66 A lucky shot killed the King. Otherwise did the situation look bad for Norway the moment when the King died. Had he lived then would Fredriksten have fallen within two weeks if not even earlier - and with that would the road towards western Norway lay open. And at Trondheim was the food shortage desperate. And Armfeldts food shortage problem that had lasted for months was now about to be solved as winter snow had replaced the mud that made it impossible to transport food from Jemtland to his army in Norway. The tides was turning and Trondheim was at the brink of collapse. Had the Swedish King lived on, then I would say its 95% likely that Norway would have fallen.
