In this episode we explore a salient not related to Dan Sickles! The Confederate 2nd Corps under General Richard Ewell arrived from the north and threatened the Union right flank. In an effort to utilize high ground in his immediate front, Gen. Francis C. Barlow advanced his division of the 11th Corps to a knoll along the Harrisburg Road. Barlow’s men were spread too thin, their line was too far in advance of support, and their right flank was exposed. Confederate brigades under John B. Gordon and George Doles converged on Barlow's exposed position and, after a brief fight, routed the Yankees and seized Blocher's Knoll (today known as Barlow's Knoll). We also visit a lesser known area of the battlefield and see what this ground was so important.

It is also interesting to note that both General's Barlow and Gordon were both wounded at Antietam's Bloody Lane and would face each other again at Gettysburg. 🇺🇸🇨🇱

There is a story from my town of Butler PA. In the late 1880's there os a civil war reenactment. Barlow is there and meets up with i think Gordon but I could be wrong. They meet talk and become friends. I do belive the story as it come from the town defacto town historian.

You can get to that monument easily by exiting te park and turning left and crossing Rock Creek and stopping and walking along the north bank to the monument

I crossed the bridge on foot and could find a good way down. Granted, I went in the summer when everything is overgrown so maybe I’ll try again in the winter.

Wish the corn wasn’t so tall and could see the full view, but still a great video and I really liked how you went down to Jones Ave to show the confederate batteries that were firing upon Barlow and his men. 🇺🇸

I knew about the Wilkerson story from Ken Burns, but didn’t know how the son died. Incredible ‘olelo (story) you told about him! 🙏🏼

Yeah that’s a pretty powerful story. Not sure if it’s all true but thought it still needed to be told due to his sacrifice.

Anyone have any info on what happened to the confederate dead from the battle around Barlow's knoll? I had a 2d ggf in the 38th GVIR who was killed on July 1. It seems reasonable to assume that he died in the assault on Barlow's knoll, although it could have been later as the confederates swept through the alms house area and on into the town. Gen Early himself was shot in his wooden leg in the town itself.

@@ProjectPast1565 I could listen to an entire album of that guitar. great video by the way… grew up visiting and still continue to visit Gettysburg. Barlow’s is a well known spot in text but rarely visited. Wish it was opened up a little more on the actual battlefield to lend to a clearer interpretation of the Confederate approach. Cheers

For the skirmisher marker, I align myself with the furthest canon on the right (facing the woods/Rock Creek) and walk down to the wood line. Once there, you'll see a path. Walk in, maybe about 30 yards and you'll see it about 20 yards to the right. There are usually small American flags marking it. Super easy to find in the early Spring, late Fall and Winter. Hard to find it if it's your first time and it's during the growing season. I made several videos of these hard hard locate markers and hidden locations.

Hey, thanks for that. It’s greatly appreciated. I’ll mark that down and try and get down there on my next visit. This was my first trip to Gettysburg so I wasn’t expecting the corn.
