Hold your ground at all costs! In this episode we explore Oak Ridge and follow in the footsteps of a Maine regiment that was sacrificed to allow nearly 16,000 Union soldiers to retreat and fight another day. This regiment is the 16th Maine and they were commanded by Colonel Charles W. Tilden. The 16th Maine held their ground as long as they could before pulling back to a nearby railroad cut. The remaining members of the 16th Maine began to tear their colors into pieces to avoid disgracing their unit and in doing this, they deprived the CSA forces of capturing the flags of the United States and the regiment.

Great video! A lot of bravery to hold a posotion regardless of the cost. Especially with a heavy enemy presence. These were some tough men and boys back then

Couldn’t imagine seeing walls of confederate infantry bearing down on your position. They were a different kind of tough then.

Makes you think doesn't it, you're amongst your brothers who are as petrified as you are and its almost like a vile game of chicken but you don't have the possibility of pulling out at the last minute! We've so much more to be grateful for than we can ever know. 👍 #ourhistory

Great video, I do have a suggestion. I wish you added the relatively new painting of the 16th Maine by Steve Noon. In this painting we gain a fresh perspective of how the sixteenth got outflanked

Thanks. Dang, I wasn’t aware of a painting. I did numerous google searches and didn’t find one. I’ll check it out.

That's pretty sad reminds me of that scene in Zulu Dawn when the British Soldiers knew they were finished so they sent the few men they had left to save the regimental colour's.

There were many legendary ‘olelo (stories) from Gettysburg. And some survivors were able to turn their ‘olelo into legends (e.g. Chamberlain). This particular ‘olelo, however, has to be among the greatest unsung stories of the Battle. Mahalo for singing that tale. Aloha 😊🇺🇸🙏🏼🤙🏼👏🏼

It’s crazy how overlooked this story is. I’ve rarely heard about the 16th Maine. Such an incredible act of bravery.

Most grateful for your work and passion here, I'm an amateur historian and live in England so as you can imagine I've no shortage of history sites and perhaps the one which remains the most poignant and emotional is the Western Front however I've always had a fascination with your civil war and you bring home what appalling and futile carnage was played out during those ever more diabolical years. Keep them coming please and best wishes 👍 🍀 🇬🇧 🇺🇸#OurHistory

Very informative about the repeat. A lot had been said about how the Union was holding of Rose to the North but nothing ever said who and how they retreated back to Gettysburg.

Are you telling us that Joshua Chamberlain wasn’t the only resident of Maine??? Great Video and presentation. The men of the 16th definitely deserve the mention and accolades you presented

He definitely gets a ton of publicity for his actions. The 16th Maine’s story grabbed my attention for obvious reasons. The 17th Maine also showed up in a huge way in the Wheat field.
