My 6 and 8 year old loved this. We are not British but are fascinated battles and British history and are hoping to travel to England someday. Thank you for making this available for others to watch and enjoy!

6:00 And then there was Conan II of Brittany, Eudon's nephew, who was descended from both King Alfred and the Carolingian Kings of France, and a legitimate claimant to the Duchy of Normandy. While William was seeking the crown in England, Conan was leading a massive army against Anjou en route to Normandy. Had he not been poisoned in Maine, he'd have been an extremely formidable claimant to all those domains.

10:30 But the archers were shooting uphill: it was a lot steeper than the re-enactment makes it look.

4:40 Earl Gyrth very nearly did kill Duke William, when he fell and the Normans fled, but the Breton cavalry of William's Rearguard intervened. (See Bayeux Tapestry for the extended scene where Earls Leofwine and Gyrth cop it: notice all the horsemen with white shields, they're Bretons.) Had William died, the battle still wouldn't have been over, though, because King Edward's elder maternal first cousin (and William's "uncle") Eudon of Brittany was alive and kicking across the Channel, while two of his many sons Alan Rufus and Brian were busy carving up the English front lines at that very moment: no way they would have stopped just because William was down. They probably thought William dead when they charged and took the advancing English by surprise.

How were Edward and William related? Edward's mother Emma was sister to William's grandfather Richard II of Normandy. Significantly, Emma had a sister Hawise who was Duchess Consort of Brittany. Hawise's son Eudon was closely allied with his kinsman William in 1066 and sent 5000 soldiers to bolster his invasion force. Had William died before being crowned, Eudon would likely have claimed both Normandy and England: a much better outcome for most of the English and Normans, actually, because Breton law protected peasants.
