They sailed all the way around to Sicily and conquered it from native Italian kingdoms and the Arabs. Normans didn't just blindly charge. Alexios tried to lure the Norman commanders to blindly chase them but they didn't take the bait most of the time.

This is the battle where Johann Schiltberger, 16 year old German nobleman, was captured and enslaved. He was supposed to be executed but the viziers of Selim begged him that he spilled enough blood and should not call God's wrath. So Johann and some other lucky men became prisoners and later slaves serving Bayezid. During the battle of Ankara between Bayezid and Timur, Bayezid was defeated and Johann this time was captured by Timur, travelling with him to India, Central Asia and Siberia, finally escaping when he was in Crimea and going back to Germany, writing his story and the places he has seen.

Concerning the fate of some of the french commanders after the battle: Boucicaut, also known as "the finest knight of his time" (there's a vid on the internet called "Can You Move in Armour" that shows his training) goes back to France. He would become governor of Genoa and lead a fleet in the Levant (pillaging a number of cities such as Tripoli or Beyruth). A rebellion in Genoa would force him to go back to France, and he would fight in the battle of Agincourt, being taken prisoner and dying in England in 1421. Jean de Vienne died during the battle. Enguerrant VII of Coucy died from his wounds while under Ottoman captivity in 1397. Jean de Nevers, taken prisoner, had to pay a massive ransom to the Ottomans in order to regain his freedom. He would gain the title of "fearless" for his actions during the battle when he went back to France. He was welcomed as a hero in the streets of french cities (you may note that those celebrations weren't really sincere). In 1404, he became duke of Burgundy. The king of France, Charles VIth started becoming a bit wacko. A power struggle thus started in France between the Burgundian faction, lead by Jean and the Armagnac faction, lead by his cousin Louis (and brother of Charles). After a rise of tensions, Jean subtly had Louis assassinated in an ambush. Using a dozen of people. In the middle of Paris. With an axe to the head. This triggered the start of the Armagnacs-Burgundians civil war. The burgundians weren't present during Agincourt and John would continue to influence the french politics. In 1418, he would meet the french dauphin, (the future Charles VIIth) in order to discuss terms to end the civil war and join forces against the English. However, during the meeting, John would be assassinated by the men of Charles VII, renewing the flames of civil war and setting the Burgundians as allies of the English for the next 17 years.

@Jojo Momo has nothing to do with the fall of Constantinople and more to do with the power struggle in Serbia following the Kosovo battle in 1389. Vuk Branković as the most powerful Serbian lord following the battle was in line to lead the state and was opposed to the Turks throughout, however, the wife of Prince Lazar, Milica, wanted to preserve her dynasty and keep her young son in power (he was still a minor at the time). The very same year, soon after Kosovo battle, Hungarians started raiding Serbia from the north, possibly due to favoring the Brankovićs, which prompted Milica to seek support of the Ottomans she was fighting not that long ago. Thus Serbia became an Ottoman vassal and Stefan's sister Olivera was sent to the Ottoman court to seal the deal. Following this pact the Ottoman troops helped the Serbs drive the Hungarian forces out of the country. It was a matter of politics and loyalty. From a modern perspective it seems odd that Christians would fight willingly on the side of the Muslim conquerors but it was a matter of staying in power for the Lazarević dynasty. That's why they fought against the Hungarians. Meanwhile the Brankovićs in southern Serbia continued to oppose the Turks until Vuk's death. Brankovićs and Lazarevićs reconciled after the Turks lost at Angora where Stefan Lazarević, having no children of his own, named one of Vuk's sons as his successor. They also fought on opposite sides during the Ottoman interregnum.
@justinian-the-great
@justinian-the-great 3 жыл бұрын
@@Xilaw Although what you wrote is in great lengths true, it's not the whole story. You see Stefan was in a way forced to be on Ottoman side, because his sister Olivera was not just a wife of Bayazid, but his prisoner too. That's why after the Angora he would free his sister. And, after he settled his affairs with Branković family, he will fight against Turks. In fact, he will become a double vassal: both of Turks and Hungarians (paying both powers was ensured by Serbia being basically those time's Switzerland, mining and producing some 30% of European silver coinage and lots of gold coinage too). Thus he would create a knight order (Order of the Dragon) together with many European knights, including Sigismund himself! He disliked Turks as much as anyone occupied by them, but he just really didn't had the choice than to obey and fight for them at a time.

@@justinian-the-great You must mention about a Turkish hatred always, dont you? First, if you think logically, the Ottomans didnt "occupied" Serbian lands at that time, as the Lazarevic family preferred to join the Ottomans peacefully. But other Christians raided and occupied their territory forcefully thus Stefan had more reasons to hate Crusaders more than Ottomans. Secondly, If you read what he did while fighting alongside Beyazid, you would know they really had a kind of friendship. If the sitution was like you portrayed, Stefan could easily betray to Bayezid so many times in the battles but he didnt. Even in Battle of Ankara he didnt escape right away when seeing the situation worsen but instead he informed and suggested Bayezid to retreat together. Ofcourse Lazarevic family didnt join to Ottomans because they love Turks, it was about the politics. But if you think Stefan hated Turks/Bayezid, you are mistaken my friend

@@justinian-the-great I think he just had loyalty to Bayezid because Bayezid saved him from Vuk And the Hungarians, once Bayezid died he started alligning closer to the hungarians. Keep in mind, it's very likely that Vuk left Lazar to die so that the Ottomans and Serbs could destroy each other while he consolidated his power and army and took control of serbia, and was clearly in touch with the Hungarians who started invading serbia after the battle, so to Stefan the Hungarians were actually a major enemy to the despotate early on.

@@aknakcam4677 Dude, he was loyal to Beyazid not the Turks, im sure he hated them just as much as he hated the Hungarians at the time and humans are fickle and change their minds and their allegiances on the fly, its called politics. One can only imagine how many lives were lost because of the arrogance of the nobles.
