Kings and Generals

6 жыл бұрын

The Ottoman invasion that was ramping up despite heavy losses in the battle of Kosovo in 1389, was met with growing resistance. The King of Hungary Sigismund called for one of the last a crusade in history and the Crusader army consisting of forces from France, Burgundy, Hungary, Wallachia, Bulgaria, England, Aragon, Germany, Bohemia, Poland, Teutonic Order and Knights Hospitaller fought the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I (Yıldırım Bayezid) and the Prince of Serbia Stefan Lazarević at Nicopolis in Bulgaria (Никопол | Niğbolu). Hope you will enjoy this episode. :-)

Cowardly Eastern Europeans though. Retreated at the crucial moment. The Burgundians took the brunt of the battle and still somehow prevailed. So bad.
@damianmares5338
@damianmares5338 6 жыл бұрын
Quetzalcoatl the east Europeans were thought to continuously try to persuade the burgundians to use the infantry first, so they probably thought that they did everything they could Plus that, the experienced soldiers in the wallachian continget were few in number, due to the victory that they recently "suffered"( even if they won the battle in 1395, they were outnumbered and they suffered horrific losses too), so it was made mostly from inexperienced men who were easy to rout( especially after they saw how the better equipped and trained burgundians knights were just trashed) The cavalry charge was really stupid, if only the westerners would've done as the Hungarian king adviced.....

@@massaweed420 Honestly, I can easily picture a French soldier of the era to not care much about the outcome of the battle in the long run but just how his conduct would be perceived in the eyes of God. THIRD FUN FACT: Sigismund managed to escape by a fisherman's boat.

An example of how arrogance and excessive pride can lead to defeat and death. Sigismund and Mircea proposed that the Wallachian infantry attack first since they had experience against the Ottomans from the previous years of fighting and the first line of the Ottoman soldiers consisted of slighty weaker troops used to tire the enemy until the Spahis joined to attacked the tired and disorganised enemy, but the French refused because they thought that they will lose the opportunity to gain honor and prestige in favour of the Wallachians

Wow, you guys are improving at a stellar pace. The change of narrators is really helping, and you've stopped sounding too dramatic. Keep up the good work! That said, I spotted two minor errors in this video: Firstly, the Knights Hospitaller's army appears to originate from Malta, which is perhaps their best-known base, but in the 1390s they were stationed on Rhodes, which they acquired in 1310 and lost in 1522. Secondly, you referred to the Hungarian capital as Budapest, but Budapest was created as a unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda in 1873, Buda having been the capital until then. I could see why you might want to call it Budapest just for the audience's sake, but it would only take a second to say e.g. "Buda, the Hungarian capital" instead, and it'd be more accurate!

In the Battle of Varna the only forces coming from western Europe were an handful of Papal and Teutonic Knights. Only Poland and Hungary sent something resembling a substantial force. The same year, at the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs, the French alone employed vs the Swiss more men than the combined Christian forces at Varna, and they were still fighting the English on another front.

Despot Stefan Lazarević had good relationship with King Sigismund of Hungary. King Sigismund even granted fortresses of Belgrade and Golubac to Despot Stefan, concluded alliance with him and Despot Stefan was even a high member of the Crusader Order of the Dragon formed by King Sigismund. The battle of Nicopolis was I think just a payback for King Sigismund's actions when Despot Stefan just ascended to the throne of Serbia, when King Sigismund attacked Serbia from the north.
