It was after carrhae war that the two empires fought each other for years. The Romans considered the Iranians as their enemy, but they have always remembered the Iranians with respect because of their bravery and fighting. The Romans learned the need for heavy cavalry from the Iranians, and the Iranians also understood that they needed heavy infantry. What is interesting is that these wars never had a final winner and none of them could defeat each other completely

Also, Rome's two greatest soldier statesmen, Caesar and Aurelian, were both stupidly assassinated on the eve of invading Parthia/Persia with two of the best armies ever to march and at the height of their own prowess... And one of Rome's other greatest emperor's, Constantine, died naturally on the eve of taking the the eastern mobile field army into Persia. Constantine was not only a masterful general but, like Aurelian, an inspired cavalryman. And an honorable mention is Hadrian's criminal idiocy of abandoning Trajans conquest of a third of Parthia because he was too cheap and lazy to finish the job. Would have been expensive and required raising a few more legions while crushing the Jewish revolt in Egypt/Judea, but Rome would have won.
@bedoonim5701Ай бұрын
@@robruss62 This type of incident happened many times to both sides. For example, the Parthians suffered internal betrayal after Crassus and were forced to return. And keep this in mind, the Parthians were superior in the open field, but they were weak in conquering cities, and the Romans were the opposite. This made them both vulnerable
@robruss62Ай бұрын
@bedoonim5701 Yes, the Sassanids fumble after Edessa, and unexpected rising of Odenathus being one such epic wild card that comes to mind. Caesar's invasion would probably have been Rome's other best chance considering the size of his army, his defeat of the Numidians (mini Parthians in being skilled desert cavalryman and horse archers, though not cataphracts), his likely intention of marching through mountainous northerly route that worked for Trajan and Galerius, and his versatility as a general in many types of terrain as well as siege warfare. Ironically Aurelian's aborted descent was timed during a brief lull in the 3rd century chaos for Rome and while Persia was weakened by strife. What's interesting is that in the final round, the Persians came closest to victory by actually conquering Syria and Egypt before Heraclius' victory at Nineveh. While the Islamic tide later halved the East Roman Empire, it utterly destroyed the Sassanids. Both however were still recovering from their last and most debilitating war,

Caracalla had organised a wedding between the daughter of the Parthian king and himself to end any war between the empires but it was a trap and during the wedding feast the Roman’s attacked the Parthians and killed many. The Parthian king managed to escape. Like the red weddings in game of thrones. The Romans had no honour and this war was in revenge for the treachery of the Romans.

The depiction of the spikes is ridiculously wrong. They would be caltrops, iron tripods with 4 spikes, each about 3 inches (7.5cm) long, which no matter how it fell one spike always faced upwards. They were barbed, so when a horse or camel trod on it, the animal was crippled. Also, the Romans would have used the oblong scutum (shield) which could be used to cover the front and top of the legionnaries' formation in the "testudo" (turtle) to protect against arrows.

In conclusion: the Romans after the battle would soon have a series of weak emperors and poor economic and social management, paving the way for the crisis of the third century, however the Parthians, fratricidal dynastic disputes and invasions of nomads from the east, would end to make room for Ardashir I to defeat Artabanus in Hormozdgan in 224 and Vologasses V in 226 and so the Sassanids entered the game and would become one of the most important players in the crisis of the third century.

@@brianjones5379 Spatha not "Spartha".Why you continue to wite it incorrectly.It is Spatha not "Spartha"(no connection to Spartans). As you was already told "gladius" onle means "sword" in translation. For the Romans it was never typollogical word reserved just to short hispanic swords.They obviously called as "gladius" any sword regardless type,shape or lenght. Even spathae were commonly refered simply with word "Gladius". Hispanic sword was in reality used both for stabbing and slashing and was effective in both(and clearly designed for both). It is popular misconception that it was for stabbing only. Spatha was also used very much like hispanic swords regarless longer blade. In fact some hispanic swords had blade long basically the same as some of spathae models.

Looks like Macrinus had the Parthians on the ropes, he severely damaged the Parthians prime Main body of veteran soldiers,the Heavy Cataphracts,which I think they used what was called Caltrops,used all the way until the beginning of Pike and Shot tactics in the late 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century, hand sized 3 sided pointed spike which ever way you threw it a spike pointed up, horses stepped on it threw the rider off, their Morale was probably broken when the Roman best veteran Units attacked them,the Heavy Infantry.The Parthians had nothing still in fighting shape except the light Cavalry Archers and some of their Camel Riders,not much of an Army,plus the Roman Cavalry was still in top fighting form and suffered little casualties.If it was me I would of finished destroying the Parthian Army,the Romans had the edge, their Veteran Heavy Infantry in better fighting shape and better Morale even though they had Heavy Casualties, Roman Heavy Infantry can take it if they see their enemy getting their ass wiped, plus a better more experienced Commander than the Parthians.

His Heavies """WERE NOT LOCALS or MERCENARIES""" that was his First Rate Troops,they got massacred, you unseat a Heavy Cavalry Trooper like that, to fight on the ground, they are more useless than a bowman. So the Persians lose their best Troops, the Romans , taking heavy casualties due to long range missile firing for their light Cavalry. The Roman Heavy Infantry and Heavy Cavalry , their Best Troops were still largely Intact, """I""" would ofused the true and tested old school Roman Turtle, retreated my Infantry to a better less open more narrower defence and had my Cavalry cut around the Persians sight unseen, would of used more Caltrops to prevent the enemy light Cavalry getting closer for better Missile Range and if you know anything about """LOGISTICS""" Bowed Horsemen in any period carried only so much arrows . What your doing son is basing your reply on this story, animation, could not have been that bad since the farther back you go less things are written down less detail. all I,m going is the """COMMANDERS""' the Romans had the more experienced one, the other just a plain King, second the Romans Destroyed the Persians first rate Troops,the Romans still had theirs in good fighting order. Don,t forget you can break a Unit or Army but they can break and fall back in good order and reform themselves to """STEADY""". Anyway , I always have had a """EXTREMELY LOW OPINION""" of that area ,its people and its history and specially its """MILITARY""",specially when that part of the country became muslim, Those people carry a Large """"YELLOW STREAK ON THEIR BACKS""".I give much more Respect to """ZULUS""" fighting tactics and ability than I do them.Greetings from a """ROMANIAN"""

this video is full of your stupid comments that continue to ignore the bigger picture and you want to be right at all costs. you keep saying "an army made up of locals and mercenaries" as if that were an excuse and as if they were less capable than the romans, stop ideologizing historical facts to accommodate your political opinions. the romans and the parthians fought each other for centuries and were perhaps among the greatest enemies of the ancient world, if you love history you don't change it to your liking. the roman conquest stopped for dozens of other reasons not just for this battle, and let's stop creating "good and bad" with historical empires, they were fucking empires, and you should have a minimum of dignity. I would also like to know where you got your information, because depending on the authors and the historical findings you read, the "truth" changes completely, also macrinus paid a tribute because the political situation in rome was desperate and he had to make sure to end that war front. The Parthians had great victories against Rome, this one cannot be considered as such, Rome also had its victories against the Parthians, such as in 53 BC in Mount Gindaro.
