Cut from Romanian movie "Triunghiul morții" (The Death Triangle) 1999.
The Third Battle of Oituz was a confrontation between Romanian and, to a lesser extent, Russian forces on one side and German and Austro-Hungarian forces on the other, during the Romanian Campaign of World War I. The battle took place primarily in the Oituz valley on the border of Hungary and Romania, between August 8 and August 22, 1917.
The attack began on August 8, after a violent four-hour artillery barrage. The fortified Pravila peak, held by the Romanian 27th Dorobanṭi Regiment "Bacău", was assaulted four times by the Austro-Hungarian 70th Infantry Division, without result. The German 117th Infantry division was more successful advancing 1 to 2 kilometres (0.62 to 1.24 miles) around Ungureanu peak and inflicting heavy losses on the 16th Dorobanṭi Regiment "Baia". To the south, the 10th Dorobanṭi Regiment "Putna" managed to hold its ground. During the night, the Romanian 4th Corps counterattacked in the German-held areas, taking 200 prisoners and retaking some lost ground. The following afternoon, however, the Central Powers attacked in force, taking Pravila peak and advancing near Coșna Hill [ro]. The Romanian 7th Infantry Division retreated to a new defensive line. Violent fighting continued on August 10, exhausting the Romanians, who could not reinforce their lines properly due to the concurrent fighting at Mărășești. Only the 1st Cavalry Division arrived on August 11, immediately entering combat and recapturing the area south of Coșna Hill and Stibor Hill in the evening. German units which occupied the village of Oituz were pushed back by the mountain troops and armored cars of the 2nd Corps.
On August 12, the newly arrived Vânători de munte (Mountain troops) Battalion, after a 160 kilometres (99 miles) march and a 20-minute rest, attacked Cireșoaia peak, in tandem with the 27th Regiment, one other Romanian and two Russian battalions. The mountain troops broke through the 70th Infantry Division's defenses, taking 417 prisoners, while suffering only 21 casualties. The Austro-Hungarian division suffered nearly 1,500 total casualties at Cireșoaia.
On August 13, another Romanian reinforcement, the Grăniceri (Border Guards) Brigade, attacked Central Powers positions south of the Oituz river, losing more than 800 men while gaining little ground. The 1st Cavalry Division retook Coșna Hill and held it against German counterattacks. At Cireșoaia, the 7th Infantry Division attacked together with the Russian 2nd Infantry Division; after initial gains, the Russian 195th Infantry Regiment was repelled, and Austro-Hungarian troops threatened the Romanians' flanks. Subsequently, the advance was halted.

It was an even bigger victory after they managed to loose half their country in 1916 before the Russians bailed them out. It’s even more amazing how they won on their own after their Russian support melted in 1918 and they gallantly surrendered to the Central Powers in May 1918

@@billyrobinson5531 yeah for sure! Russian "bailed us" on paper, but in the battlefield they abbandoned their positions quickly while romanians died while holding their positions(the serbs were the exact opposite). They didn't helped us so much as the french military mission. Let's not talk about how after the bolshevic revolution, the russian troops stationed in Romania bolshevized themselves and not only started to attack the romanian army, but also pillage our land until they got disarmed. If russians really "bailed us out" as you claim, the situation would have been very different.

they still do the thing where they "get shot" and throw up their arms and fall over dramatically, but this film is quite, quite old, so it's understandable. It does happen that way occasionally when a soldier gets shot, but not as often as these films portray.

This is one of the things that is so terrifying about this war. In many situations on the Western Front, most of the men who went over the top had no chance of reaching the other side, or living through the attack period. But in encounters like this, one side's infantry reaching the stone wall 5-10 seconds before the other meant that the other group got massacred. Seconds always make a huge different in practically every combat situation but.... that is just... horrifying. If they had reached the wall 15 seconds earlier, the OTHER side would've been massacred. But they didn't. So most of them died. Individual life is so inconsequential in large scale war, that your entire life- every memory, every love, fear, dream- it all can end because of a 5 second time differential. And then, some idiot commander, appointed by the monarchy, with little to no combat experience, out to seek glory for himself, makes the idiotic decision to leave the defensive position that is allowing you to do a dozen times the damage to the enemy force than you yourselves are taking- and if you don't listen to his order, he pulls out his pistol and shoots you on the spot, and so you all charge over the wall and die, when you were winning the battle, but just not "gloriously" enough for the commander in question.

It's like the generals, for lack of experience in anything but orderly Napoleonic style warfare (which, even by the American Civil War, that style of war was already falling to pieces) and so completely gave up on tactics and strategy. This is why this war is remembered so horrifically in Europe, and barely remembered in the US. When the Americans got there, they tried all sorts of bizarre, unorthodox, and frankly, sometimes absurdly crazy tactics and strategies. It meant that, in the time America was in the war, we took only ~100,000 casualties KIA, whereas every other combatant had hundreds of thousands or millions KIA. What's craziest to me is, because of the no-man's-land between trench lines, infantry adopted what amounts to artillery doctrine. Obviously, when they're close enough to shoot directly at the enemy, they just do that. But most of the soldiers in these types of charges never made it ANYWHERE near close enough to do that, and if they did, it showed the enemy exactly where to shoot at and throw grenades. So you can see at, for instance, 12:20, all the men in that trench are angling their guns upward. They're not shooting at the enemy. They're attempting to saturate the enemy positions with bullets using the trajectory arc in large enough quantities that they eventually statistically killed enough in the other trench to attempt an advance without heavy resistance. That is almost identical to the Doctrine of Artillery that was used right up until precision-guided munitions began to be developed at the end of the 20th century. That's why there were hours-long bombardments in nearly every major battle in World War 2. One US military guy (I've forgotten who) stated that the US bombers had achieved "Pickle-Barrel" bombing precision- they could land a bomb in a pickle jar. In reality, iirc, something like 90% of the bombs didn't hit their targets. So, saturation was what they had to do to ensure bombing targets were destroyed: drop SO many bombs, for so many hours, that the likelihood that the targets were destroyed was high enough that you could stomach sending in the infantry. In the Pacific Theater, this strategy costs tens of thousands of lives, but there WAS no other strategy that would've worked at the time. The technology for more accurate and precise bombing simply did not exist. The Japanese were geniuses at entrenching themselves deeply enough that even after hours, or DAYS of bombardment from every angle- howitzers on the beaches, fighter and heavy-bomber bombardment, and constant naval barrage into the vicinity of where they knew the fortifications were, SOME were destroyed, but not enough to prevent tens of thousands of casualties in battles that the US had predicted would likely only cost a few thousand soldiers. And the US and UK improved on their strategies with each island, as well as they could, yet the casualty counts for every single battle in the Island-hopping campaign were still shocking to American war-planners, basically every single time that the Japanese had time to entrench and fortify the island. It is a testament to the ferocity of the Japanese soldiers, their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the Emperor, and to defend Japan, and their devotion to practicing honorable combat. Still, they should've just surrendered instead of doing Banzai charges, but they didn't even know that was an option, so it's yet another tragedy in the Second World War that could have been preventable if the combatants had been able to trust each other slightly more and believe their own propaganda slightly less.

1. The movie is called "Triunghiul mortii" 2. Its a romanian film made in 1979. So its from the communist period. People will say in the comment section that the equipment isnt accurate. True. The romanians are using mosin nagant rifles, the germans wear ww2 equipment, some of the machinnery are just made with cardboard and cheap metal, and gas masks dont look from that time at all. This is because the movies were made... exactly, in the communist era. The movies were made more for propaganda, people didnt know too much about ww1 in the small detalis (guns, unifroms, etc) and most of the props are expensive or they didnt had them at all. Dont forget that the personel of the movie excepting the actors was the army. Literally the army of the socialist republic of romania. Thats why some of them dont know how to act their death, or simulate a bayonet fight. It was cheaper, and it was enough just to make the romanian visioner, that the blue soldiers are romanians and the gray black are germans. For a 1979 movie, it got a pretty good quality. It would be much more impresive if the romanian movie industry would invest in historic movies like they did in the communist era. The movie would be a classic even today if they respected the guns, uniforms, props and all that, but who am i to judge? Ive seen it 3 times and it was good each time

The benefit was that the Romanian Army (roughly 800.000 men in the battlefield) kept busy for two years in the Carpathians a corpus of armies of the Central Powers - German, Austro-Hungarian, Bulgarian and Ottoman, hundreds of thousands soldiers, if not over one million enemies. These Germans and Austro-Hungarians would have otherwise fought the French and the Britts in Western Europe, and later on the Yanks. Without enough machine guns and filed artillery, the Romanians based their entire war on countless bayonet charges with trumpets and flag. The Romanian way. See the story of Hill 789 or the White Shirts attack.

A very far from the third battle if that is the case ,aside from portraying Germans in complete no ww1 uniform and modern KAR98 ,there is no depiction of Austrians and Hungarian who took the most part of casualties, neither Aemored cars and cavalry used by Rumanians and no Russian cavalry. Entire film Isa far cry to what was and using anacronic non era gear, uniform and weapons
