Back in 1996, I met a man who i came to respect greatly. He was the Chaplain depicted in one of those canvas boats. His name, Delbert Kuehl. He was awarded the Silver Star for spending hours on the far side of that river, providing first aid and evacuating men, all while he himself was wounded. He had such admiration for those he served with. He crossed that river, on the first wave as a noncombatant. A soldier he crossed the river with threw his cigarettes away as they got in their boat and saying he wouldn’t be needing those anymore. He was dead before they landed on the other side.

My uncle John was a S/Sgt in "I" company 504th PIR and was in one of those canvas boats. He said later than he couldn't believe he actually survived that crossing and took the other side of the Nijmegen bridge. They started with 26 boats and lost 13 in the 1st wave. His company commander was Captain Moffatt Burris. My uncle was wounded in Anzio and later at the battle of the Bulge, and he finished the war as part of the 82nd airborne honor guard in the American sector of Berlin spending 9 months there before returning to the U.S. on the Queen Mary.

It’s amazing how much milder the violence is in older 15 films like this. By comparison, it seems in a modern 15 war film shows almost anything.
@BluntMonster Жыл бұрын
Back then, not only were these stories meant to be a heroic retelling of events, but a romanticized version of battle to recruit soldiers. It was all ultimately propaganda. It was meant to dilute the actual horror of war. I'm thankful for these stories though, they really make you root for the "good guy" in a sense, but I am also thankful for modern war stories to undo the programming of my younger years of "yearning" for what this movie portrayed.
@windostar2622 Жыл бұрын
If you want to watch an older violent war film, I recommend Platoon 1986 and Hamburger Hill 1987.

@@BluntMonster personally, I really like hacksaw ridge. Ok- Desmond Doss was exceptional, but at least it’s a real portrayal of events, and it shows the genuine heroism when it occurred. Also, I think saving private Ryan is probably a tad biased towards the worst atrocities of the landings. I think the landing scene is probably representative of the worst that happened there, with a moderate amount of dramatisation. For example, the bunkers from where the Germans were firing machine guns were at or slightly above the level of the beach- not in such a raised position and not as fortified. Also, the beach was in reality about twice the depth as seen in SPR. Thus the machine gunners did not have the level of advantage portrayed. Soldiers were probably hit straight out of the landing craft, but the fire was likely a lot more random and less soldiers were hit at that point. The vast majority of the landings were much easier.
@johnhallett58464 ай бұрын
@@BluntMonster frankly I think your opinion is prejudiced and basically propaganda as well a great movie does not need gore to get its message across or tell a great story. You seem to think everything should be like a video game

Why all modern war movies depict officers leading their men into battle (and always being a hero) is beyond me as it simply didn't happen 90% of the time. No doubt these movies are based on the officer's tales as they are the ones that survive and tell the story.

The scene with the British troops being ambushed by the Germans in the bunker was either overly dramatized or just stupidity on the British Army’s behalf. If they had smoke on the bunker AND friendly suppressive fire (which they did) they should have gone around to the back where the door was and either chucked a grenade into it or simply cleared it out using CQB.

Where did they get all the tanks from to make this movie? When they made the movie "Fury" with Brad Pitt, there was only one working tank in the museum and another that had to be made to work. It doesn't seem as if the tank scenes were from WWII documentaries. They are too new and too produced for the movie. Are we to understand that all of the tanks used in this movie were somehow disposed of between the time this movie was made and when "Fury" was made?
@xzerobistarcraft2 жыл бұрын
The Tanks in the movie are Leopard 1 Tanks that were made after the war, they are dressed up to look more like Panther tanks. The allies are using m47 Paton tanks that are also made to look like Shermans, I believe they did use a couple of real Shermans but most of the tanks in this movie are dressed to look like the original armor that was used in the war E.G Shermans Panthers ect. They also made some fiberglass models to represent tanks. The tank you are referring to is a Tiger 1 and none are in this movie, it is also true that the only one working tiger 1 and is named Tiger 131, it's currently owned by Bovington tank museum. however chasis of tiger 1 tanks do exist in Russia and other places but do not run. As for working Shermans, there is quite a few that work today and are dotted all around the world. If you are intrested in learning more about these tanks, you can check out either the Bovington museum website and youtube or a great youtube channel called Johnny Johnson kzbin.info Johnny goes into great detail about military firearms and vehicle uses in many fronts and eras in movies! he also talks about their real-life counterpart and compares accuracy of how the are represented in movies too real-life uses and details.
