Battle of Rorke's Drift Napoleon Total War

This is the closest setup I got playing Rorke's Drift with Khartoum-Zulu mod in Napoleon Total War: 205 british against 1200 zulu warriors. Below 205 british soldiers I am not able to cover Rorke's Drift perimeter that includes the hospital and Commisariat Stores and also since zulu is controlled by 2 AI players, AI attacks simultaneously instead of waves of zulu warriors as it's shown in the film Zulu 1964 by Enfield.
The order of battle is inspired on the book: Rorke's Drift 1879 'Pinned like rats in a hole' by Ian Knight, Campaign Series 41, Osprey Military:
British forces: (205)
1 x Rorke's Drift Regiment General (John Chard, Royal Engineers)
2 x 24th Regiment
2 x 2nd Warwickshire
2 x Irregulars (Bromhead Squadron)
8 x Private Welch
Zulu forces: (1200)
5 x Udhloko
6 x Ndhlondhlo
5 x UThulwana

Sources say that the actual number of zulus was around 4000 not 3700. The British was not 100% sure, but the number could be 141,139, or 150. In fact this battle was a last stand by the British. 11 of these soldiers defending earned the Victoria cross for the defense. This was and still is the highest number of Victoria crosses given in a single battle and given to a single regiment. Wow that's amazing!

4000 Zulus were present, 2000 engaged. The actual number of british was some 265, but 111 broke. The remaining 155 consisted of 4 Civillians (often represented by Boers) and British regulars.

And the initial attack insisted of only 600 Zulu soldiers, and with the average age being 40-50 years old and then marching for 8 hours, battling for 8 hours and skirmishing for 4 hours all without sleep and food, they retreated knowing they wouldn't get support since they were not supposed to be there

it has to be said that the 11 victoria crosses given out in this battle was a way of counteracting the embarrassement the british had by losing so many men at isandlwana just hours before. many historians and military experts believe this.

I love the story of the British soldier who escaped from the burning hospital and managed to hide in a cook house chimney throughout the night, his face blackened by soot, he hid patiently with Zulu marksmen just yards from him. I believe another of the hospital escapees was lying amongst dead and dying Zulus outside of the perimeter until he managed to get back to the safety of the British defences.

@@ransomedavis2208 Private John Waters of 'B' Company 2/24th Foot was the soldier hiding in the chimney; Gunner Arthur Howard of the Royal Artillery was the patient who escaped from the burning hospital building and lay amongst dead horses and Zulus throughout the night outside of the defensive perimter just a few feet from the relative safety of the compound.

The British started engaging the Zulu formations at 500m which was probably about a 15% chance of hitting at that range. At 300m you have about a 50% chance of hitting and at close range nearly 100% chance. Even at 100m or further, one shot can penetrate multiple people which would have been devastating for a mass Zulu formation. Also the walls of sandbags that surrounded the compound were too tall just just walk over. So All the British needed to do was keep firing and any Zulu who managed to scale the walls would have been isolated and easily picked off. This battle went on for the entire night of non stop probing and wave attacks from the Zulu

To improve the similarities of this battle, your guns need to have much further range, better accuracy (chance of hit), and multiple target penetration chance at ranges depending on the bullet velocity, mass and impact material. Any energy left over in the round will travel through to an altered trajectory behind the target. Also, the walls and I think the terrain was more open as well. There didn't appear to have been any weak points in the amount of guns able to engage the Zulu since they were continuously unsuccessful at not becoming routed as they probed for weak spots

Toby McElhinney Oh, yeah you are correct. It was fifteen that died during the battle and two more that died afterwards due to injuries. The Zulu suffered close to 351 dead and some 500 wounded.

Rd is a good example of how a few trained solders with modern weapons of the time and a lot of courage can hold off a much larger native force. Shame you could not make up the real battle as this was fought mainly at night with very few Welsh in it , no opera stars either. But the vc,s were real.

So why didn’t zulus attack them at night instead? They would be harder to see that way? Historically why did the zulus attack attack this position during day? I am aware that these were reserves and weren’t even supposed to attack but would a night raid not make more sense by default?
