The Battle of Ulundi took place at the Zulu capital of Ulundi on 4 July 1879 and was the last major battle of the Anglo-Zulu War. The British army broke the military power of the Zulu nation by defeating the main Zulu army and immediately afterwards capturing and burning the royal kraal of oNdini.

Because it was separated in 3 firing lines; the first line of kneeled soldiers would fire, then the second would fire while the first one reloaded, then the third line would fire while the second reloaded. This processs would repeat over and over again, requiring high discipline and training, but it never failed in hundreds of years and wars for the British.

Buller's instincts proved correct and consequential while Chelmsford's rush to salvage his reputation was both darkly comical yet unsurprising. These are just pixels on a computer screen, 1' and 0's. But the fact remains, each of those characters was a real person. In real life. Who lived. They grew up being cared for by mother and father, the partied, they had friends, and fell in love. They had dreams and aspirations. All of that was blown to smithereens on that battlefield. It's easy to be disassociated from the horror because of the simple representation. But if you take a moment to contemplate all that loss of life. It's insane.

While a force is organized and fighting it is much more effective at protecting itself, especially when compared to a force that has been routed and/or is retreating. In this example each British soldier would on average have killed about 15 Zulu soldiers. If they spent 5 hours to do so, that equates to an average of one every 20 minutes, which is feasible. Apparently being mounted with better weapons, chasing a scared person on foot in open terrain, is quite an advantage. As difficult as charging Gatling guns, cannons and packed rifle fire must have been, the Zulus would probably have been much better off had they pressed their attack. I imagine morale played a big part. The Zulu warriors knowing they were going into a fight with an enemy that can beat then from a distance with little risk to themselves. must have demoralized them before the battle even began.

“The British” didn’t really do any of that… That entire war was deliberately started & pursued by the political ambitions & wicked machinations of Sir Henry Bartle Frere - High Commissioner for South Africa - with the connivance & approval of Lord Chelmsford - neither of whom consulted with or had the approval of the British Government for their actions. They relied upon the enormous distance to the U.K. & the length of time that communications took between the two regions, to give them the opportunity to provoke & win a war with the Zulus, before they could be prevented from taking such a reckless & unauthorised course of action… The unanticipated British defeat at Isandlwana & the mass slaughter of the British troops there - with no prisoners taken - sent shock waves throughout the British Empire when it became known, & there was an outcry among the British public at home, who wanted the loss of their brave soldiers to be avenged. Thus, the British Government were virtually compelled to send reinforcements to South Africa & to replace Lord Chelmsford as the Commander in the Field - both for his unauthorised invasion of Natal & for compounding that outrageous action, by losing so many Men in such a recklessly incompetent manner… However, until Chelmsford could be replaced with General Wolseley, the war was already in progress & the Zulus were on the rampage. In addition, Lord Chelmsford was determined to defeat the Zulus before he could be replaced… Thus, what had already been started - without the wishes or the authority of the British Government - could not easily be stopped… & the offer of peace by King Cetshwayo (which he made after several subsequent Zulu defeats) was made to Lord Chelmsford, who had no intention of accepting it, because he was determined to defeat the Zulus decisively, so as to salvage some credibility back home & to finish **what he & Sir Bartle Frere had started.** We shall probably never know what would have happened if General Wolseley had already relieved Lord Chelmsford of command & HE had received Cetshwayo’s offer of peace instead,… although Wolseley himself was a very ambitious (& very capable )General, who perhaps might have preferred to defeat the Zulus in battle, than preside over their agreed upon surrender - but that is merely conjecture of course… What is truly TRAGIC however - as well as the deaths of so many brave Zulu & British troops in that war - is that King Cetshwayo was very favourably disposed towards Britain before the war started, & had clearly & deliberately been threatened & bullied into rejecting an outrageously concocted series of Machiavellian demands, in an ultimatum written by Sir Bartle Frere, so that British Troops effectively invaded the Zulu homeland, merely to satisfy the geopolitical ambitions of a few unscrupulous individuals. And is that not the case with SO MANY wars that have been fought throughout the World, from ancient times, to the present day…? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😔
