On September 9th, 1943, the Allies landed on the Italian mainland at the beaches near the coastal town of Salerno. The four Allied divisions were immediately involved in a hard battle. For the next eight days, the Allies desperately fought to expand the bridgehead repelling countless German counterattacks.

Loved this series, my father landed with the 36th division, 141st regiment, L company. He made it through all the way to the battle of San Pietro when he was wounded and had to be taken out of action.

San Pietro was a bloody battle for the Americans in WW 2 early mid- Summer 1943 , And not a memorable battle ( gruesome ) to find out about , unless you 're into making Korean surfing with Gigdit a memorable moment ?

My parents best friend, Stan Hicks died on the beach in the Salerno landings. He was a Commando. Machine gunned by the Germans my Dad said. They shared ownership of a sailing dinghy on the River Medway before the war. Stan Hicks was sorely missed by my parents. May they all rest in peace now.

@@kingasakamoto219 What, the ones in Auschwitz, Belsen or Dachau do you mean? Or maybe the Luftwaffe over London ? Or the wounded Nazi soldiers on the Eastern front massacred by their own forces? Or the Ss major who stubbed his toe at the Oradore Sur Glane French village massacre. No honour in being in the German armoured forces in WW2. Just disgrace.

I was looking for some mention of the jump made by the 509th Parachute Infantry Bn and 307 Engineers into Avellino about 20 miles inland from Salerno. Unlike the jumps made by the 82nd’s 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment that was a reinforcing jump into the bridgehead, the 509th and 307th jumped well behind enemy lines. This was a force of about 640 men. They were involved in heavy fighting around Avellino and took many casualties including the capture of the commander, Ltc Doyle R. Yardley, by the Germans. Yardley spent 16 months as a POW before he was able to escape.0

Wow these 2 volumes were PACKED full of information. Great job! If you're into wargames, soon to be released is "Salerno'43' by a designer named Mark Simonitch from a company called GMT Games. It will be the newest in a series of games; this one at regimental scale. They play really well and are quite pretty with maps and counters.

Not that there is a good place but what a miserable area to do this it looks like even if you could dig you'd hit rock fast just like the Isonso river battles during WW1 where most were killed by ricochets's and rock fragments. Then again its no worse than being run over by a speeding T-34

I'm guessing many of us play war games. I've "fought" this battle in Panzer General 1 and 2 and again in Order of Battle.....the arty in the hills were devasting to my troops and I lost the 1st attempt...badly. Artillery pounded the infantry and then the Germns brought in the panzers to crush the landing beaches

This narrative does not address the fact that the U.S. 18th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division had to land on Salerno Beach to support the U.S. 36th (Texas) Division, to insure their hold of the Beach Head. Why is this not given? Check your facts. The 18th Infantry later withdrew to England and prepared for the Normandy Invasion (Omaha Beach, Easy Red). At the time, the U.S. 36th Texas Division had no combat experience and was a totally GREEN outfit. Check your facts and give credit where credit is due.

I have checked my sources and couldn't find anything about the 18th Regiment's involvement in Salerno. Can you please give me your sources (at least two, as this is how I work) that can confirm your statement?

@From the Battlefields Check the WWII Book written by the 1st Infantry Division Historian; a detailed account of every action initiated by this Division during WWII; from the landing at Oran, Gela, Salerno, and Omaha Beach. The 18th Infantry Regiment made every landing in Europe. Also, check with the people that run the 1st Infantry Division Museum. At that time, everything about the Texas Division was highly political. They never wanted to show that the 36th Texas Division needed any help at all.

@From the Battlefields There's more to some of the disturbing narratives that's been given by historians in the past 20 years. Omaha Beach: The landing on Omaha Beach was conducted by the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division, an experienced outfit from North Africa and Sicily, and yes, Salerno too. The 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Division was attached to the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division for the purpose of the Nomandy landing. Again, the 116th Regiment was a green outfit (no combat experience at all). They needed the leadership and confidence of the 1st Infantry Division. After all, the 'First was First', the best at that moment in time - the best. In Africa, they were at Kasserine Pass, Hill 609, and Long Stop Hill. Without any doubt, the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division made the landing on the Easy Red Sector of Omaha Beach. The 116th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division was there to learn and watch the professionals in action. However, no matter how you look at it, they didn't expect to face experienced German (352nd Division) troops from the Russian front. It was still a massacre, a horrible situation for all the men that were there.

@@FromtheBattlefields Investing in a paid professional voice actor would probably be worth it honestly. Give them your script and let them send you high quality recording.
