My father ordered a new, 1970 GTO with the 400 Ram Air IV engine and paid a deposit on it. Some time later, Pontiac contacted him and told him the RAIV engine was no longer available in the GTO for the remainder of the 1970 model year. They offered him the 455 for the same price, but he declined. What Pontiac did was hold back the remaining GTO RAIV engines in late 1970 for use in the 1970 1/2 Firebirds. Between my father, the dealer and Pontiac and since the RAIV engine was still available in the Firebird, Pontiac agreed to assemble one last 1970 RAIV GTO for my father's order. So my father's 1970 GTO was likely the last RAIV GTO made.

@@JamesBarber-cu5dz The performance guys at Pontiac developed a RAIV 428 for 1970. Pontiac wouldn't let them make a 428 for 1970 and a RAIV 455 hadn't been tested and there was concern it wouldn't hold up, or the drivetrain wouldn't hold up, because it hadn't been tested for a RAIV 455. So the RAIV 428 was scratched for 1970, but it inspired the round port, aluminum intake 1971 455 HO. The big Olds and Chevy engines got 2.5 inch exhaust pipes, but all Pontiacs got 2.25 inch exhaust pipes. It might be just as well, as the high performance Pontiac exhaust manifolds didn't make much difference over the standard dual exhaust and the aftermarket Pontiac manifolds that take 2.5 exhaust pipes don't perform any better either. The Olds 350 W31 engine was hand assembled with racing clearances and ran with the big engines, with standard 350 Olds exhaust, which was smaller than what the big Olds engines used. Pontiac tried to get a compression ratio waiver from GM for the 455 Super Duty, to run a higher compression, but GM denied it. Chevy got compression waivers for the 1971 LS6 Corvette and the 1971 - 1972 LT1 and the 1973-1974 L82 engines in the Corvette and Z28. That's too bad the 455 Super Duty couldn't have had a higher compression ratio. The GM limit in 1971 was 8.5:1, but the LS6 and LT1 were allowed to run 9.0:1 compression ratios. In 1970, the Pontiac engines lost a bit of compression ratio and the 4-barrel, automatic transmission 066 camshaft was dropped for emissions and standard performance 4-barrel automatic engines got the 4-barrel manual transmission 067 camshaft in 1970. We blueprinted a 1968 RAII 400 to NHRA specs and the measured compression ratio was only 9.98:1 after all of the blueprinting to maximize the compression ratio. So from the factory compression ratio was actually a bit lower.

They did NOT "exist" from the factory. Not a one such Stage 2 car was built at the factory except for one "engineering prototype" that was owned by the factory for "testing purposes". @@eriklarson9137 Pontiac engines from 287ci thru 455ci used basically the same block with displacement changed by bore and stroke. Oldsmobile and Buick had 400/425/455 and 400/430/455 engine families, respectively. They also had 330/350 (Olds) and 300/340/350 (Buick) engine families which were quite different than the big-inch engines. Also worth noting that until 1970, GM's unwritten rule was no engine larger than 400ci in any intermediate-size car, and that Oldsmobile dropped the 455 bomb in 1968 forcing the other two to play catch-up. Then what did the Rocket Division do but circumvent "the edict" and stuff 455s into the 68-69 Hurst/Olds. Hey, Pontiac got away with it in 1964. Actually Oldsmobile's intent with the 455 was to save cash by being able to build the 442's 400 engine on the same engine line as the 455, using the same crank. That did not work out well for the 442, as the long stroke 68-9 400ci engines rapidly gained a reputation as grenades.

By the following summer car was running 12.20s@113. Took forever to get into the 11s but by late 90s car was running 11.20s thru tailpipes and on m/t ET street tires. Car has been apart for awhile now as it got put into paint jail then life got messy. I do still have the car however. It’s claim to fame was a significant reduction in weight. It was a two bolt main motor weighing around 667lbs, the hemi was nearly 800lbs. Also, the improved oiling system was added because they were prone to cracking in the lifter valley portion of the block. A well tuned Buick 455 Stage 1 would out run any Hemi or BB 454 with relative ease. But when the Buick 455 let go, it let go! No saving or rebuilding the block.

Im really glad to see so many people supporting the Buick. My Dad worked for Buick in the late 1960's, and Early 1970's, so as a teenage boy, with a twin brother, we drove Buicks from the very beginning. My twin brother was lucky enough to find a 1972 solid white Stage 1 car which was just as fast with the decompressioned engine as it was with my dad's 1970 Ten and a half to one engine. I know because I pulled the original motor out of brothers car, and while I was freshening up his original eight and a half to one engine, i put my dad's ten and a half to one motor in it so he could daily drive the car. Unfortunately my brother was dumb enough to sell the car in the 1990's for a steal of $9,000 which when I found out made me sick. I had to build my own car out of a 1966 Skylark with a bone stock low compression engine, because I couldn't afford a Stage 1 engine at the time, and I wasn't about to assume that dad's engine was mine to do with what I wanted, so i never had a Stage 1 that was mine, byt i can vouch for just hiw fast the Buick 455 was, because I rarely ever git outrun by anyone at that time with a liw compression stock engine with absolutely nothing high performance about it, and when I couldn't beat them i went and borrowed my brother's car.

"I'm really glad to see so many people supporting the Buick." I only EVER bought 2 NEW cars BOTH were Buicks! And most of my USED cars were Buicks or Cadillacs. As to the "muscle cars"; Buick KICKED it off at GM (TBF Buick STARTED GM in the first place...) The Pontiac GTO often is credited with the whole concept of stuffing the biggest engine into a midsized body car. But the GTO was the THIRD GM car to to that. The Oldsmobile Rocket 88 in the 1940s was before, and the grandaddy was the original GM "Muscle car": The 1936 Buick Century! The coolest bit is the Century was not only available as a coupe, but also as a sedan. Meaning the '36 Century was GMs first "Sports Sedan"! If ONLY Buick would NOW get back to making CARS, I'd be in the market.

The Buick GSX got a raw deal in the court of public opinion and marketing. Most everyone thought that Chevy SS & Pontiac GTO's were the kings. Just better press and WOM. I was one of those young car nuts who was hoodwinked, too, declaring the SS454 was supreme. Only when we got older did we realize how wrong we were, that it was indeed the GSX Stage's I & II were the supreme set-up for fastest street machine! Who knew - thanks to the newer SAE Net ratings - they were actually churning out about 500 HP ?! They're all awesome Classics, and today's youth has no idea what it was like in the car scene in the 60s and early-70's. Owning/driving one today is like a micro-vacation back in time...and it simply cannot be described with words.

That was the only big block I ever owned. Because of Pontiac's wonderful engineering, a 73 455 dropped right into my 1980 Trans Am Turbo. It was also hopped up with a moderate cam, headers, intake and carb. And it's ironic. You couldn't get more of a screaming, flashy car than that era Trans Am, and yet everyone knew it was slow AF so it was a major sleeper. I didn't know you could get so many kills in such a car. It killed a Viper once which was my favorite. Unfortunately it had so much torque it was warping the B pillar of the body, I was afraid it would grenade the TH350 behind it, and I the whole car needed restoring anyway. When I sold it, multiple buyers came forward and everyone of them said they wanted it for the 455 to put in a GTO, which is what it was finally sold for.

So the small block has narrower intake manifolds. Than the Olds big block. They also have smaller main & rod bearings 2.5in main & 2.125in rod. Vs 3.0in main & 2.5in rod as used in the big block. The connecting rod lengths are also different 6.0inch in the small block. Vs 6.735inch in the 455. Only the bore spacing is the same so they could manufacture both on the same machinery. I owned a two door 1973 Pontiac Grand AM with the 7.4 litre badge on the tail. That's the 455 cid motor with a 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust. This was a special John Mitchell designed car meant to compete with big Euro cars like Benz, BMW, Jensen, and some Italian GTs. Less about straight line performance, this 455 could set you back in the seat and cruise all day above 130 mph, as I experienced driving through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. The Grand AM was certainly muscular, but it had a euro ride, making cornering and control priorities...and it was a gorgeous, shapely car, unlike the ugly Olds and Buick.

The Buick 455 Stage I was a Hemi killer, the combination of light weight and 510 ft/lbs of torque at 2800 rpms made short work of moving heavy weight. The Pontiac 455 had the best balance, with the Super Duty 455 being the pinnacle. The Olds 455, as much as I like it, needed tuning to make it run hard. The W31 small block 350 could run just as hard with less weight.

You mean the Olds "Ram Rod" 350 ? I don't read enough about them. Yeah, as much of a Poncho head as I am, I've learned a lot over the years how good the Buick was , in several ways. As torquey as the Pontiac is (the Car Craft comparison from around 2001, they couldn't find the true torque peak on the Pontiac, because the dyno readings started at 3600, and it was already coming down a little), and yet there was th he 455 H/O in'71 & '72, and the even better super duty455, the even longer stroke Olds 455 had torque, but didn't make hp at high rpm, and didn't like to rev. Not to say its like a Cadillac, or a 460 Ford truck motor, but it came in last among the 455,455,454,460,440 comparo

Vette got a car link on the hole shot (friend wasn’t a good driver) but we ended up getting to his side (about 1/8 miles) before we had to slow down for the next red light. Guys in the Vette looked over and asked, what kind of Cutlass is that? I said it’s a Buick. A Buick!, the guys replied. We all went HD together. Keep in mind that the Vette was a factory Z16-425hp car. And it wasn’t stock. Both cars would be worth a ton of $ today! Especially that Vette.

Anything over 400 was beastly back in the day. It took a good carb/intake combo and exhaust to really make em breathe. Loved em all. Anyone remember the 500 Cadillac engine?

There is no small or big block Pontiac V8 engine. Pontiac did not use the big and small block designation like the other divisions did. This is well known in the Pontiac circles and no one in the know ever calls them that.

Out of the 3 , I would have to say Oldsmobile 455 rocket, growing up we had a 75 Oldsmobile Cutlass and a Oldsmobile Delta 88 wagon both had a 455 rocket engine the difference is you actually felt the acceleration in the Cutlass, the wagon because of cruise control was less of a jolt pushing you back into the seat . I'm not sure of the color codes or packages Cutlass was baby blue with a black vinyl hardtop not convertible, 88 wagon was a dark copper penny color big 13 person rear seat facing out the back boat 😂

Owned both Olds 455s and Buick 455s. In the Delta 98 and Buick Electra, both with 2.73 Gears and same size Tires, the Buick were much quicker accelerating, even though, when burping the throttles at idle in Neutral, the Olds sounded snappier. That said I never liked the Buick's Oiling system, with the Pump located in the Aluminium Timing Cover, which required a very long tube from the Oil Pickup to the Pump. On a cold Startup, you could hear the sound of a Bearing Knock.

First off Pontiac never made a big block engine. They just kept boring and stroking the same size engine block, to get the cubic inches they wanted. The same way as a LS 427 or 454 is not considered a big block engine. Only Chevrolet, Buick and Oldsmobile made small block and big block engines. Plus you pissed off some Pontiac enthusiasts with the wrong pictures. 😒 You got to do your homework before posting these videos 😮

To set the record straight here ! The 455 didn't come out in the Trans Am until 1971. Believe me i know because i had one. The 70 T.A. still had the 400 , which was a good engine also. But hey... Just Saying ! 🤷

@warpspeeed6345 I don't care who or whom is listing it. They didn't put a 455 in the Trans Am until 71. I've had two Trans Ams through my car years and I have studied their history and the Mustang history for quite some time. I have had more Pontiacs and Mustangs than any other of the cars I've had and I've had a lot of cars. 😊 I'm just correcting their mistake...which sometimes happens. Just Saying ! 😊👍

The (73) first year they started with the Bird decal. You don't have to believe me if you don't want...the only thing I can tell you is to do more TA research. 🤷🤷

This is all from memory, so some of it could be wrong. Prior to 1970, Pontiac was counting on the introduction of their Ram Air 5 400 in 1969 to be their Super Bowl street engine. There was also a 428 version in develpment, for drag racing. I saw one article many years ago, where somebody got ahold of a 428 Ram Air 5, switched to a bit of a bigger Holley carb, installed it in an orange Firebird, and dyno'd at at just shy of 500 hp, running in the 11's with a 4 speed. Unfortunately, it was cancelled once John DeLorean was moved to Chevrolet, and there wasn't enough money left, according to what I have read, to develop a really great top performance 1970 455. Pontac was compelled to keep the Ram Air 4 as the top performance engine for that year. The ultra performance Super Duty 455 engine finally came out in 1973, but it was a few years late, it would have been as good as any in 1970, with high compression and Ram Air 4 cam.
