Battle of the Little Bighorn: Lt. Donald McIntosh

On June 28, the battle-traumatized surviving soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry had to bury hundreds of their fallen comrades. This was done quickly, with a few shovels, some trowels, broken plates, and bare hands. The result was not pretty.
Colonel John Gibbon described the shallow graves, “…as thickly lying in all conceivable positions and dotted about on the ground in all directions are little mounds of freshly turned earth showing where each brave soldier sleeps his last sleep.”
Here is what happened to the body of Lt. Donald McIntosh...

Lt McIntosh had very distinct Native American features. Astounding for the time that he was a fully commissioned officer. His photo and his portrait seem to differ quite a bit. He and his wife probably had a very interesting story of their own. Finding the ring was a miracle.

I dream of putting together a pamphlet about the 7th Cav at Arlington someday. Or better the Custer Connections at Arlington. So many are there. I spent two days there a couple years ago. Summertime. Clocked about 8 miles each day walking that cemetery from one end to the other trying to find everyone who was connected to Custer in some way. Incredible. And I thought I was going to die 🤣

This bit of trivia about a deceased member of the Seventh Cavalry is fascinating too learn. IN many past visits too the National Monument & it's Museum there. Although I had often read of the details of Lt. MacIntosh's death while trying too cross ❌ the River, & then withdraw from the Valley engagement. With this very graphic & brief explanation of his Death by fellow 7th Cavalry Troopers on that day. There was never any mention of his past heritage or career prior too his Battlefield death at the Rivers bankside. As I inferred the learning of past knowledge of his background, is so similar to that of many other people's own Historical heritage. And all is so parallel too our own that it's most ironic & quizzical as well. Thanks as always for sharing this Cool 😎😎 stuff of History.

His wife’s ring found in 1995 with his wife’s initials was almost certainly taken off of Macintosh’s body by a Native warrior who in turn easily lost the ring in the activity following the battle. -IMO that ring would have been a trophy to any warrior and would be the first thing taken off his body by a trophy seeker.

Just to comment on the battle I read a report from 1962 It told how Custer and 286 men rode into the main warriors and dismount expecting Reno to come and help him He could have rode into the warriors and cut his way through However Custer was far outnumber Reno couldn't help Custer
@SiobhanFallon7
@SiobhanFallon7 3 ай бұрын
@johnsmithSongbird Hi John! I've also read that Custer attacked the other end of the village in order to draw pressure off Reno. Then he expected the combined forces of Reno and Benteen to form a juncture on the field of battle with him and his men. Custer had 5/12 of the 7th. Reno and Benteen had 7/12. As you point out, the US was definitely outnumbered by warriors. But it wasn't the first time. And when they were outnumbered at the Yellowstone Fight, Custer still managed to turn the tide 🤷🏼‍♀️
@johnsmithSongbird

@SiobhanFallon7 thank you I did read how he told Reno benteen to meet him as he turned the way he attacked But when Custer dismount His fate was sealed The battle lasted about 30 minutes Maybe less The Indians attacked 50 to 1 And most soldiers were not able to even reload Some shot them selves

@SiobhanFallon7
@SiobhanFallon7 5 ай бұрын
@joegodbout830 That's right! On paper and official rank and pay, George Armstrong Custer was a LT COL. However, once an officer achieved a brevet rank, he was honored with that title for the rest of his military career, and that was the correct title with which he was addressed. This is why almost every single contemporary source referring to Custer calls him a General. You will see this is in the official military court testimony at the Reno Court of Inquiry in 1879, in the writings of all the 7th Cavalry officers who published articles about the fight (Godfrey's Century article etc), Elizabeth Custer's three memoirs, and pretty much any article published in the newspaper at the time of the Little Bighorn fiasco. So good of you to watch and comment, Joe!
