Here in Brazil you could find pirates copies of the japanese PS1 version being sold on flea markets with the title "Metal Slug Submarine", even with a cover with Metal Slug characters drawn along with submarines. But you boot it up and its just In The Hunt, nothing different at all. As the title shows in Japanese, people didn't know what was written there so they probably just believe it was indeed "Metal Slug Submarine" :D

I'm a bigger Saturn fan, but it's nice to see 2D done well on PS1. PS1 could do 2D well when the game was a good fit for the machine's hardware setup. Of course, the work of the developer matters as well. Ports are often handled by different teams, so that is a factor as well. I don't know why the Saturn version suffers here. The system's odd architecture hurt other games. As for this game, it's such an interesting idea -- similar to Mr. Heli -- with such unique and amusing art direction that many of us would come to appreciate more after Metal Slug. It was fun to see the comparison for this game. Thank you.
@RetroCore6 жыл бұрын
I think the Saurn version suffers mostly due to a poor team making the port. SIMs are a strange company. Sometimes they can impress while others you wander what they were doing. The PlayStation port is missing animation but I think this is a great pay off for full speed and smooth gameplay. Just a shame the Capcom fighters never worked out that way. Those always had less animation and still played like crap.

@Bloodreign16 жыл бұрын
rockmanhunter Xing didn't handle it, that's likely why. Xing were pretty spot on with their Taito ports to the Saturn, and even did a great job with Image Fight/X-Multiply on the Saturn and the PS1. Hell, Xing even ported Taito's Pulirula to the FM Towns Marty, and even on that, other than missing character shadows, the game played spot on. Hell Xing also did Capcom's Wonder 3 for the PS1 and Saturn, both are missing animation frames, but both are fantastic ports. But be warned, they are Arcade Gears, which means due to small print runs for that entire series (IF/X-M included, as well as Pulirula), they will make your wallet cry for mercy. Xing respected source code, and it seems they always had it to work with during their porting jobs. Rretro Core, had Xing done Gekirindan, instead of Virgin, it would've come out far better than it did. I will never overpay for a copy of Gekirindan (even when one was $50 at a shop one time, Image Fight/X-Multiply on the PS1 got my money instead, because hey, $50 game that sells for $150 on Ebay was too good to pass up. Of course I also shelled out $50 for Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus for the Saturn at that same shop), it runs choppy, and I have Gekirindan on US and Japanese PS2 Taito compilations.

Great comparison Mark, I did knew about the Win95 port, but it was too much a mess to me to run on my (At the time) Windows 7 machine, so I just went to PS1 port, I actually consider the PS1 to be easier for some weird reason, and I still quite play it often on my Vita. I've been watching closely both the PS1 and Saturn versions because I always found that something was off. It turns out that it is not as simple as "the Saturn ports has slowdowns while the PS1 is silky smooth". In fact it appears that the Saturn version is running at 60 fps while the playstation port runs at 30 fps. So while it is true that the Saturn version has more slowdowns they are more noticeable because if fluctuates while the Playtation stays locked at 30fps. The Saturn version also kept the arcade slowdowns while they removed them on Playstation (with an option to turn them on if I'm not mistaken). So you gotta pick your poison, unstable "faithful" 60 fps on Saturn or a stable 30 on PS1.

The visual downgrades of the PS1 version can mostly be narrowed down to the first two stages. It lacks the destroyable icebergs in the first stage, the flicker animation of the windows of the buildings in the second stage and also the parallax scrolling which occurs at the last stretch of the second stage (inside of the production hall). Interestingly, all those things are there in the Saturn version. The animation of bigger battleships getting destroyed is also a bit smoother in that version. There are certainly other minor animations missing from the console ports considering the amount of detail it has but it's really hard to make out besides the ones mentioned and it's beatiful (and fun!) game on both platforms.

One of the few times where the PlayStation had a better arcade port than on Saturn, but in this case XING didn't handle the latter. SIMS Co., Ltd. is indeed a hit or miss developer, especially when they were a Sega subsidiary at the time until going independent in 2004. Good god, they messed up one of the precursors to Metal Slug for fucks sake! SIMS is still active today, albeit only relegated to mobile titles with 3DS and Switch ports, and the occasional fishing titles (a niche they found after porting Sega Bass Fishing to Dreamcast and developing Uchi Tsuri! Sega Bass Fishing for Wii). Irem was still active in video games at that time (or rather the video game division known as Irem Software Engineering since 1997; the original entity Irem Corporation still exists today as Apies, an independent company formerly under Yubis and Atlus between 1998 and 2001), only they mostly produced R-Type sequels and the Zettai Zetsumei Toshi: Disaster Report games. Alas Irem Software Engineering eventually returned to pachinko machines in 2011, while most of the remaining Irem game staff until that point left to form Granzella, which revived the previously cancelled Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 4 Plus: Summer Memories as a result of acquiring the IP in 2014.

It's sad that IREM ended up having so many troubles, when it came to the quality of the games they were putting out they really punched above their weight. If things were a bit more stable we might have got something skin to Taito Legends or Capcom Classics dedicated to just IREM games, so much of their catalogue is hard to find and spread across platforms, the only decent home version of Dragon Breed is on the Amiga for instance, even In the Hunt which actually made it to consoles is rather expensive to buy these days.

IREM didn't release anything on the Wii so you must be referring to the SNK or Data East arcade classic collection. There is a great IREM collection for PC but it's just arcade ROMS in an emulation wrapper. Ideally they should have treated things similarly to the better Sega Ages releases, an R-Type collection for instance that's a real attempt to gather everything they can into one package so that fans can enjoy every variant version. It might be a squeeze but they could have got every R-Type game plus variants onto a DVD, Final and Delta are the only ones that would really hog space.

Unfortunately, none of the ports seem to match the framerate of the arcade original, but the Playstation port is very close, and thanks to the original mode, it's actually got some extra content that the arcade doesn't. The Windows 95 port not only has slowdown and flicker, but it looks very blurry compared to the other versions. I'm not sure if Windows 95 PCs were limited in regards of resolution compared to the Playstation and Saturn, but it's certainly the case here. Seriously? They only did Irem's Skins Game and R-Type III that ran well. Everything else was plagued with slowdown.

Man i freaking love this game...And i fucking mean it! I had the soundtrack of the arcade and in my opnion...is much better than the PS1-Saturn (Specialy the Third Stage...Is fucking transcendant)

The Saturn music is the same as the Arcade music but now with higher quality instruments. I don't like the arranged soundtrack found on the PlayStation and Windows ports though.

Now mark i will have to disagree with you this time because saturn port for this game wins by default because first it has all of the arcade animations second it runs at a very good resolution and finaly because of the arranged soundtrack from the windows 95 version so what will be the next boftp? please tell me you're doing street fighter 3 third strike i told you about all of the ports i know for this game on twitter you know

Out of all of SNK's shooter offerings, this one interested me the least.

This wasn't even released by SNK.

The only reason some SNK Neo Geo games look like this is because the people who made In The Hunt left Irem when they went bankrupt and formed Nazca who made games for the Neo Geo.

I own the original Irem PCB and can tell you that the Arcade version slows down way, way more than your Arcade footage suggests. It's perhaps even worse than the Windows 95 version, all other versions certainly seem to run much too fast compared to the original. The game was too ambitious for the hardware it ran on back then. Hmm, that's very odd. Maybe there are different board renditions. Or the level of the game was set higher? I played all of these versions on default difficulty setting and on real hardware. We, apart from the Arcade footage which was emulated.

The game runs on Irem's M92 hardware. I played the game yesterday on "normal" difficulty with massive slowdown. The arcade emulation most likely isn't cycle accurate which makes a huge difference in this case. It was obiously playtested with this "slow motion mode" whenever there are many enemies on screen and because of it, it isn't a massively difficult game on normal. So it might look better without the slowdown, but it isn't true to the arcade original. No doubt a 60fps version was the developers vision, but the M92 just wasn't up to the task.
