Star Cruiser (I988/I989) is, to my knowledge, one of the only titles of its era to get Eight different versions of the same soundtrack (PC~8800 (YM2203 and YM2608), PC~9800 (YM2203, Alternate Score), Sharp X One (PSGAY~03 and YM2151), Sharp X68000 (YM2151, Alternate Score), Star Cruiser MD (YM2612/YM3438), and the Arranged Soundtrack CDs), making it one of the most impactful titles on the grounds of how expansive it is for remixing (though at the same time, many tracks do have some form of Tempo Inconsistency; some of the Sharp X68000 tracks that need rigorous tuning in Post~Production); Gameplay~wise, the best port out of the bunch is the Sharp X68000 version when the system is running on a Motorola 68000 or 68030 clocked at 025 Megahertz, this is the frequency that is equipped for Speedrunning and anything higher will become too fast for you to feasibly complete the game without needing TAS resources; this port also has the added benefits of refined maps, a significantly expanded Enemy Roster, the ability to purchase and sell items in Bulk (note that, akin to the original Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star, Star Cruiser's original I988 build and pre~X68000 ports forced you to do transactions One Unit of an item at a time, so Bulk Transactions truly made a difference), Ronn Moss playing the role of Brian Wright (at least we can presume he served as influence, due to his impact on The Bold and the Beautiful; Brian's redesign is a virtually perfect match to how Ronn looked in I987), and a series of unique Game Crashing glitches that have interesting workarounds that make the game an incredible Research Piece. Star Cruiser MD (I990) is a Retelling of the original I988/I989 title that was intended to attract Japan's younger demographic, Masaya's ambition was to bring Arsys Software's game to the Megadrive in hopes that those who couldn't get an NEC or Sharp computer would be happy with an Easy Type~esque version of the title and still get the most out of the plot in spite of its gameplay changes; Namcot (Namco) was given the job to localize Star Cruiser MD under the Star Quest moniker, the intended release of this for International audiences in I994 was axed when Nintendo Research and Development 04 had come out with Star Fox and it is clear that this relatively early Megadrive title saw less of a chance at defeating Star Fox in the Performance and Mindshare categories that I can understand why Namco cut its losses before Star Quest became a financial burden for the company. As it stands today, Star Cruiser (I988/I989) does not have a lot of coverage on the Online front from start to finish: Only three people have covered the game in full with commentary, those being Spolan Sergey for Russia (Sharp X68000, English Localization Prototype), Ichiro Tanaka for Japan (Original PC~8800 Build), and Roya Rockwood (me) for North America (Sharp X68000, English Localization Version 00.99 by Celcion and Nebulous Translations); it has been an incredibly combined effort to get out the game to a significantly wider audience and I appreciate that we also have folks such as Scarlet Gryphon and Justin Hill (Master Jace and MasterJaceBeats) who helped its influx in the Remix scene before the rest of us came in to boost its presence and impact, more people truly deserve to experience this masterpiece because of how it affected the development of future Open World Multigenre RPGs and thus I am happy that good folks such as yourself are ultimately aiding the cause. For anybody who might want to see Longplays and other major contributions to the original Star Cruiser over the past Nine Years and change (at the time of typing), I have provided a list below for outlets that have delivered major coverage, my own included; when combined, this is well over Seventy Hours of programming that viewers can marathon, it is incredible as to how much this game left a mark on the International audience over this past decade and wishfully this will fuel more attention to it and an eventual remake of the original trilogy soon enough. I wasn't familiar with this one, it's interesting to see what was happening outside Europe and the UK. There were various 3D games that predate this, but none of them have this level of attention to presentation, in comparison they generally had no soundtrack or barely any sound at all. Probably due to the hardware and bedroom programming being the standard industry model for years, somebody with the skill set to handle the programming was unlikely to also have skill sets and resources allowing them to compose full soundtracks and create portraits and other pieces of art to represent characters etc. That only really came along after the transition to larger teams and spending a lot more money to hire people for specific roles which seems to have happened a lot later in Europe.

It's funny to think about how this game and Slipheed shares the same theme aesthetics between each other. StarBlade & Shadow Squadron (Stellar Assault) also used similar approaches, but those games were made with actual 3D graphics in mind.

This is a game that was so ahead of its time, it didn't get the success it deserved. The main developer Kotori Yoshimura (née Katsunori Yoshimura) has been one of the pioneers in the usage of 3D in games in the 1980s, and it shows in pretty much all Arsys games. The music in their games is also amazing (check for example Knight Arms). By the way, recently she has asked people on Twitter to motivate her to write a true sequel to Star Cruiser...

This is one of those games I desperately want to complete, but just find way too difficult to motivate myself to actually do it. It's way too tough to tell where enemies are when flying in space, and I end up dying before I actually find them. It's a shame too, because this game is technically outstanding on the Mega Drive. Full polygons with no special cpu on the cartridge, and a decent enough framerate to be playable. Unfortunately, I haven't played the other versions, which is a shame because the X68000 version is leagues ahead of the others, which is to be expected on what was the most powerful PC of the time. I'll check and see if that one has a fan translation. If nothing else, I've listened to the Mega Drive soundtrack many times. As a matter of fact, the amazing intro theme has been my wake-up alarm for the past couple of years now, just as a testament to how good it is. The way it slowly crescendos before its main chorus is enough to get me out of bed without being overly loud or irritating.

Great choice 😊 Only really aware of this one, as it was often used by Sega fans as an example of the Mega Drive doing Polygon 3D without the need for any DSP chips (long before the Sega SVP or Nintendo FX chip) and to shutdown idiotic claims by likes of Argonaut's Jez San, that the Mega Drive could only handle 2D sprite-based titles. A few Magazines reviewed the Japanese M. D title, hammered it due to the Japanese text. An official North American. Port was announced wasn't it?

@thefurthestmanfromhome1148

@Diskun The MD fared well with it's 68000 CPU and Z80 used for 3D titles like Block Out, F-22 and LHX Chopper, but it's soundchip wasn't all that. Just ask Sensible Software who had to reduce speech in Megalomania to Atari ST levels. Or Capcom with SF2/SSF2, Speech was terrible. Fanboy bias is a terrible thing in any era, i was gutted the PC Engine never got an official UK release, if it had, i would of gotten into the MD much later. As much as i enjoyed MD Alien 3,it wasn't a patch, atmosphere wise on SNES Alien 3. Clever coding routines and palate swapping techniques helped improve the look of many MD titles, but there's only so much you could do when you only had 512 colours to choose from. People should appreciate the era for being one where often games on MD and SNES were completely different, rather than the minor differences between platforms these days on console 😭

@Diskun don't let the fanboys ruin any of the fun, even if it's just a tiny bit. Though I know the feeling, but in my case, it's the Super Nintendo fanboys that have annoyed me and that seemed to me to be most common, which makes sense considering Nintendo's long-term success. The most common things I've heard are that things that aren't even Mode 7 are claimed to be, or they compare some of the very best SNES music to the very worst Mega Drive music as proof of how "bad" the system's sound chip is. I've seen that kind of evangelism for all the major systems really. I just hate when lies or misinformation are spread. Or the double standards like you described. It's hard to defend the version of Sunset Riders on MD when it's missing so much and when the SNES version is impressively accurate(and I'm not as fond of Konami's SNES stuff as some others). On top of all that they cut from the game, I can barely see the bullets, so that basically ruins the entire MD game for me. The only way the SNES port can be considered boring due to its accuracy is in a modern context when the arcade version is now easily available, but that's a silly argument if you're comparing ports. In addition to Falcon, I believe Gunboat is also partly real-time 3D on PC Engine(in a window, which was common at the time). SNES has some games that are 3D without Super FX like Race Drivin'. There's even a Game Boy version of that.

Polygon graphics are definetly possible by skilled game programmers using the limited resources and their experience at coding on NON-3d chipset hardware via pure software coding... this is actually true even on certain PC-DOS games made before Microsoft's nefarious direct X launch. There were many skilled Brittish game programmers who made amazingly revolutionary 3d games that the mainstream PC gamer media did not really focus on like the 1995 or 1996 F1 championship racing game which did not use any 3d chipset on PC-DOS... so image if that programmer had been instead working on the Sega Saturn with its custom 3d chipset and dual CPUs. The key difference is that Namco's StarBlade used a very expensive and custom dual CPU 3d chipset powered arcade hardware while Star Cruiser and Silpheed were made custom coded for Japanese proprietary PC hardware CPU software coding... Meanwhile Shadow Squadron aka Stellar Assault, being a Sega created game, ran on Sega's custom hardware and the first one was wasted on the 32X thanks to the greedy, arrogant ideology of Sega of America's management staff who did not care about supporting the Sega Saturn and when the Saturn version released, refused to support it. Further a key difference is that outside Japan, you were left to rely on the subsidiary branch effort to get people aware of these games, where they came from and why you had to know about them to play them outside of the very few hardcore gamer magazines that managed to know any information directly from Japan. Nintendo of America had been fully tapping into Japan and doing some of the best possible marketing hype using their Nintendo Power Magazine which was not only official but was a monthly publication while Sega of America simply did not treat their official Sega Visions Magazine or the Sega fanbase with any amount of respect so even when Shadow Squadron released, very few knew about or were hyped about the game other than being told to buy the 32X by Sega of America in 1994 and 1995 despite wise adult and late teen gamers who had working income and were highly numerous and ignored by SoA, were fully aware that the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation and Ultra 64 were in the pipeline and should have been prioritized and focused on.

I've always been impressed with this game. Japanese PC gamers seem to have had it better than what was available for DOS based PCs in the west in the late 80s. This would have also been an amazing game to release in the west on the MD, I guess not even Sega wanted to bother with localizing it.

Namco had the rights to the western release. They'd even translated it but for some reason the game was never released.

@@RetroCore wow that's a real shame. Would be amazing to find a prototype rom of their translated and localized version.

Why would the European micro computers limit themselves to 1 button
@amerigocosta7452
@amerigocosta7452 3 жыл бұрын
Not only European but also some American micro computers had this horrible thing about the one button (Atari, Commodore..) I think it's because of how influential was the Atari 2600 at the time these machines were conceived. Too bad game design would progress very quickly, leaving that type of controls behind. Said that, later Amstrad CPC models actually had 2 button controllers bundled. Talking about non European micros, the Amiga supported three different buttons from the get go, but it's safe to say most developers never cared and the few ones that did, at best supported two. In Japan on the other hand they figured out pretty soon what had to be done, and even a primitive machine like the MSX-1 had many games using two buttons.

havent heard of this game, property because its very japanse and would not find around it at all. Anyway generally 3d graphics fps was quite very slow back in the days generally on 8/16 home machines. Also its look like its "cheated" quite a bit on mega drive, but if its works then its works. here its works extractly as intended. So..... Howover im did played a 3d maze game where flied a similar plane and tried to shoot each other in a maze. Its was a Mac game and was quite fun as im remember it.

The 3D for the environment on the Mega Drive is quite odd. It would be interesting to know how they did it.

So you're telling me a bunch of guys from the UK copied a game no one outside of Japan even knew was a thing?
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, that would make sense because nobody could say it was a copy 😋. I don't think they did rip this off though. Many basic polygon ships kind of looks like this.

@Diskun I forget us dumb, inferior Westerners cannot POSSIBLY have developed or innovated anything without it being a copy of our superior Japanese counterparts. /s

@Diskun Yeah, Nintendo HATES getting showed up by second party developers, ESPECIALLY Western ones. Its why they made Metroid Other M. They couldn't STAND that some guys from Texas did Metroid better than they did. Its also why Retro isn't being allowed to work on Metroid Prime 4.

Never hear this game but consider it's never left Japan I guess that no surprise I never hear of this game as I always avoid early 3D-ish game coz how choppy the frame rate and how ugly the graphic.
