32X is my favorite version. It does feel better than the Saturn version, feels more solid in the graphics department and plays perfectly well. It also has a few more game modes, and you can select some funny character colors by holding down or up, and pressing A/B/C. There are 8 colors by characters, to accommodate for the 8 players tournament. Fantastic port considering the hardware and time, if you ask me. Which is pretty much true for a lot of 32X ports (Space Harrier, After Burner, Virtua Racing, Mortal Kombat II). Sadly, we will never know what the 32X associated with the Mega-CD could have produced, but I believe that a strong potential was there for 2D games with pixel-art backgrounds done by the MegaDrive, special effects handled by the 32X as well as colorful sprites, Redbook audio from the Mega-CD, as well as big storage space from the CD. The Mega-CD could even be used to handle elaborated backgrounds with 3D effects, because it had some good possibilities with the ASIC chip. We did get a glimpse of the configuration I just described with games like Kolibri or Knuckles Chaotix, but the Mega-CD was not in the equation.

There were some games that were "Mega CD 32X" format, but they were just juiced up versions of FMV games. So mainly just Digital Pictures content.

The original Saturn Virtua Fighter looked great in the summer of 1995, despite the occasional glitching in the polygons, which you would notice mostly in the replays or closeups. It certainly was rushed and looked rough. VF Remix more than made up for it, and looks spectacular to this day. Sega also found a novel solution that takes advantage of the Saturn hardware, using VDP2 planes for the arena floors. This became the standard for all 3D fighting titles on the system, combining 2D and 3D assets to brilliant effect. Needless to say, if Sega America had launched the Saturn in September 1995 like they should have done, VF Remix would have been the pack-in game for the console. Would that have changed things? Perhaps. It's nice to imagine.

Virtua Fighter was a precursor for the future of gaming technology. Sega actually opened up a new world in my opinion with this game and Virtua Racing. (and I'm not even the biggest fan of 3-d fighters) This game was military-grade tech for the arcade for the time. Great comparisons!

I remember that the PC port came bundled with a shiny new 3D accelerator card. It made the game look and play AMAZING. You could play it without the card, but it looked and played all janky. With the card however, you got a better than console experience! Something us PC gamers weren't used to at the time.

Virtua Fighter Remix wasn't only released for Saturn, but also STV-based arcade and Windows PC. The original Virtua Fighter also has a regular Tiger Electronic handheld and an R-ZONE cartridge. While I keep hearing many in America mentioning Tekken more than Virtua Fighter, Virtua Fighter is still strongly loved in Japan, even Akira Yuki and Sarah Bryant figmas were released in original Virtua Fighter polygon looks, which I really love. Even the VF anime seems better than the Tekken one. Despite Tekken being considered the first 3D fighting game by Guinness World Records, a Virtua Fighter arcade cabinet was added in a Smithsonian museum. Some say they are both wrong and consider Sega's Dark Edge to be the first, but there are still some differences.

When i got my hands on the Saturn with release games, Daytona and Virtua Fighter, even though they were not the best ports, i just thought they were incredible, this was six months before the PS1 remember. The thought of playing these amazing games i'd only been able to play in the arcades and they actually bore some resemblence, OMG. I think Sega and the Saturn really shone with V.F.2 which was incredible at 60 fps and the Saturns highest resolution it really shone as one of the best 3d fighters at the time 32 bit consoles.

Great vid. One of my all-time favourites. Not too sure that the 32X could have easily replicated the arcade's music though - the audio boards alone are waaaay bigger than the 32X and the Mega Drive combined (minus the plastic casing obviously). The arcade version sounds amazing considering it's not Red Book Audio or whatever. I'll have to get a cheap copy of Remix soon - I never really gave that much attention back in the day. Looking forward to more great vids.

My favorite version is Virtua Fighter Remix PC! This has always been the definitive way to play considering arcade emulation is rather poor (due to the hit detection barely working, even if the visuals were already fixed), the AI is the better Saturn one, you can pick between the flat shaded models or textured models, and, you can run it at a higher resolution! Unfortunately... Even tho i can run this version just fine on a modern computer without, it was, hard to figure out, so, what is sad, is in-fact, it is hard to get it running perfectly for many, even if it is on the PC. If the arcade version ever gets good collision emulation, then i'd say that is the best version, but we don't have that, so, yeah...

I could tell right away the arcade version looked off somehow even though haven't played it since the mid 90s. I actually think the Saturn VF Remix looks amazing for the first 3D fighter ever running on a system known to have some 3D struggles. I'd probably stick with that version over any others personally, although the arcade without polygon shading has nostalgia value. This title and Virtua Racing were a quantum leap ahead, not sure if anyone who didn't experience them new in arcades could ever understand.

I miss Yu Suzuki... No, scratch that, the video game industry misses Yu Suzuki... if it doesn't, then it should miss him. Sega's very own Miyamoto. A pioneer, a brilliant mind, one of the greatest and most influential developer from this industry. It's a shame that he no longer has a place in Sega or in this industry. This industry needs to learn how to treat better its greatest contributors. Suzuki deserves a lot more than what he is getting now... deserves a lot more than most...

The Windows 95 port is great if you play it with a Saturn USB controller for PC. The Windows version lets you pick between the original polygon graphics of the arcade version and the texture mapped graphics of VF Remix on Saturn, so it's like 2 games in one. You can obviously just play VF Remix on Saturn and have just as good a game, but I like the original arcade graphics so since the original Saturn version sucks Win95 is the way to go. You do have to download some fixes and stuff to get the game working properly on a modern computer though.

Below is a video for Virtua Fighter PC for the Diamond Edge 3D card kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXyzYo2enqerY6c Unlike the software rendered retail version that uses a checkerboard pattern for the ground like the 32X port, the Diamond Edge 3D port has texture mapped grounds like the Saturn Remix version.

The Saturn wasn't much weaker than the Am1 board. 80 mega flops vs 120 mega flops. The Saturn was somewhere in between Board 1 and Board 2 overall, albeit closer to Board 1. The Saturn was messy though from a developers point of view and initially Board 1 games looked like puke.

Retro Core I think my favorite version is the pc one with some fixes and Dxwnd the game can run as intended on modern pcs without slowdowns also the pc version allows you to switch between Arcade models and Remix models it also allows you to change the brightness on character models the floor and background each one separately and you can even do this while playing! If anyone is wondering where i got the game with those fixes here's a link: thearcadestriker.wixsite.com/arcadecollection/virtua-fighter-pc it's easy to install you'll have to change some things manually to fix the framerate but it's not that hard, just set the framerate limit to 17 on dxnwd and the game will run at 60fps it still feels as fast the saturn port which is not a bad thing.

On PC port, you forgot to enable floor textures. I think F6 and some other function keys open menus during fights in which you can change graphical settings, camera settings, etc. Aside from that, there was a version of VF on PC optimized for Diamond Edge 3D card (actually, it came bundled with the card, if I remember correctly) and that version took advantage of 3D acceleration functions of the card making the game look and play more smoothly. Here's a direct comparison between software and hardware accelerated versions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHTLpZ-Ng650gpYm47s

Yeah, the likes of Rendition Verite and even Matrox Mystique (not to mention Voodoo Graphics) killed it. On the other hand, they did try to create a full multimedia card with Diamond Edge, but it just wasn't good for 3D as it wasn't rendering 3D shapes in a conventional way (it used quads instead of triangles)...
