Technically the Hornby thomas is a shunter, the E2 was a dockside shunter after all. His use in the show to start with was shunting aswell and he still does occasionally.

I have two of the old-style Hornby controllers, and they both seem to handle slow speeds pretty well for most engines- especially the Bachmann 56xx which can crawl at a snail's pace without stopping and starting with those controllers. The two controllers have an average age of about 14-15 years old, so perhaps Hornby had to cut corners before dropping the old style controllers altogether.

I cant wait for the trials to start lool :)) at 12:00 the class 3MT/2MT (not too sure what class it is lol) did do alot of shunting around stations and on branches an still now on heritige lines.

Great video. Can't wait to see part 2. I do have one request for another video, If you hadn't already, could you review the night mail train set from hornby? Im thinking of getting one and would like to see a review on it. Thanks, Dylan.

This will certainly be an interesting series. Always wanted to see a series of shunter challenges. A touch disappointed that the little L&Y Pug seen in the yard below Toby won't be competing, but then again it's so small that it just wouldn't be able to compete with the rest. Also, sorry to nitpick, but technically Toby WAS a shunter, working at a harbor before he came to Sodor, and afterward shunting in the Ffarquhar Quarry. But the Hornby Toby model (which I presume is what you have) is utter crap anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Finally, apologies if this is too late, maybe an idea for Shunter Challenge 2: Train Assembly; Arrange a bunch of wagons randomly in your yard & see how fast each shunter can assemble a train, obviously resetting the wagons to the same positions after each test, penalty for each time a wagon derails or there's a hard shunt/crash or for every bit of cargo that falls out. Wagon overturning is automatic disqualification.
@baconbapfilmstudio10 жыл бұрын
that would be a good idea but doesn't the speed of train assembly depend on the driver? But that would be a good test IRL for a 'driver challenge' series!! :)

Hornby produced Y9 pugs with metal chassis blocks which gave then an advantage over there fellow railroad rockets as it had more wait so better traction and electrical conductivity.
@TheScotsmanReturns10 жыл бұрын
The Hornby 0-4-0s will win the speed test, even if real life shunters can't :P

Bachmann Class 08 FTW! I have a limited edition one, its awesome!
@ZeldaTheSwordsman10 жыл бұрын
Thomas should be here. He's done a fair bit of shunting and E2s were used primarily for heavy shunting duties IRL. That budget Class 08 was originally tooled in the *50s*; that's why it is the way it is. Ah, the "Class 11". AKA 11001 (LMS). The Black 5 is technically called "Class 5" or "Class 5MT". Black 5 is a nickname derived from their most common livery. Slow-speed performance is partly dependent on the controller. Not all motors are equal, and not all conventional controllers get even performance out of all motors. This is less true now than it was a few decades ago, but it's something to keep in mind especially if running older equipment. There are some solutions; Wilbert Awdry made a cheap unconventional controller using a 100-ohm radio rheostat, an on-off switch, and a reversing switch. It got fine control with a variety of motors (Essar, Tri-Ang, Romford, Gaiety for instance), and would be pretty easy and cheap to build.

Nice vid, looking forward to the rest of them the Heljan CL14 looks great. However if some are DCC they have a advantage over their DC rivals due to the way DCC works, having all the power all the time and all that?

Great video as always I cant wait for the test to start!! However have to ask one thing though and I am fully aware that this series is serious and is to test the different locos under different conditions. But the super fan in me had to ask, how come Thomas isn't included. in both the television show and the original stories Thomas was the "big stations" pilot engine and did all of the major shunting work in the yards. Again I understand that this is a serious video and that the Thomas characters are for fun, so please don't criticize what I am saying. whether he is added or not or even if Percy is removed I'm still looking forward to the test videos and any other new videos.

What about the class 60's (super shunters)
@baconbapfilmstudio10 жыл бұрын
Looks like it will be interesting! But you are missing the WD austerity 0-6-0, if you had one i would say put it in but no biggie of you don't! Another suggestion is the GWR taffy tank 0-6-2, but i am massively biased towards steam locos! But it will be cool to see which wins!! (my money is on the Bachmann 08) :)
@Commander_Scott25810 жыл бұрын
The thing with the class 08s is that Hornby make a standed one (the green one) and Bachmann make their standed the blue one. if you compere them both the Bachmann is far beater than Hornby. The red one is a premium so it can't count in the standeds of each company
@HA1LILPALAZZO10 жыл бұрын
that 0-4-0 that Hornby do you showed, I managed to get one of those and have painted it up in a nice blue (old GW paint I had fittingly called Enchanted blue lol) and my friend's daughter has named her Blueika :-) nothing to do with the video just wanted to tell you all lol :-)

Will you do incline tests? Slow speed over insulfrog points? Just how slow can they cope with? I figured out the scale speed of my Cally Pug was over 180 mph LOL. If you speed runs those cheap 0-4-0s will have it.

@mgcooke10 жыл бұрын
So, if you're using DCC for some locos, and DC for most, doesn't that invalidate the low-speed running test, at least for the DCC ones, as DCC handles low speed way better? Also, did you notice that Thomas was up to no good? He's pushed a wagon off the rails and managed to derail himself too :)

It's in LMS Wartime Black. Just like IC82's model of Flying Scotsman is in LNER Wartime Black. Those 2 classes of engines would have worn that livery during WWII to make them harder to see at night during air raids so they wouldn't be destroyed.

Why can't THOMAS be with the other tank engines he too was a shunter on the Island of Sodor and I figured it out the HORNBY THOMAS model you have really is an E2 the way HORNBY made it they got an original E2 tank model they did was texture it paint it blue with red lining added a #1 on the sides and put a face on it and so that's how they made THOMAS I was hoping if you could get HORNBY DUCK the great western panier tank engine and OLIVER, TOAD and STEPNEY.
