" Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions ! "These famous words will never be forgotten. Many legions have been lost and reestablished but 2 out of those 3 - XVII and XIX, the pride and joy of Augustus together with the XVIII, are lost forever. Funny how Varus, at that time and place having good reasons not to do it, dismissed Segestes warnings about Arminius and his involvement in a plot to destroy the legions. He eventually kills himself just like his father have done it before.

Hmmm, somebody didn't study the battle much before making this. The Romans were not near their camp and were actually on a different road than they thought they were taking. The road rounded around a hill, the Kalkriese. On the other side the road was a swamp. The Germanic tribes built fake extensions of the hill, behind which were bulwarks to hide the Germanic troops. This false extension of the hill narrowed the road for at least half a mile, forcing a bottleneck where the legions could only march 2-3 wide, which destroyed their cohesive battle formations. Arminius (Arnim or Hermann his more likely name) was raised as a hostage in Rome and served in the Roman army, so he knew their strengths and weaknesses. The Germans allowed the calvary vanguard through and waited until about half the army was in the bottleneck then attacked from both the the front and rear and their fortifications. Parts of the Roman army panicked into the swamp where they were bogged down and easy pickings for spearmen and raiders who knew the swamp. The battle lasted anywhere from 2-5 days, and evidence finds the Romans actually built temporary fortifications in 2 different places (as they always carried fortification material, and also used carts from their baggage train). About 400 legionnaires escaped, and in the revenge campaigns of 12 and 15 AD, as well as in 34-35 AD, they recovered at least 75 others who had been made slaves. Many dozens who were captured were sacrificed. The loss shook Augustus and he began a mental downward spiral. Supposedly, in a delirium on his deathbed his last words were, "Varus, Varus return to me my legions." Varus is often portrayed as a bumbling fool, but he is the victim of Roman writers 30 to 90 years after the battle whose Roman egos needed a scapegoat and reported the battle from mostly secondhand sources who were political rivals of the faction Varus came from.

They were not "barbariams". In Germany there is a city that is older than Rome: Trier. Only because the Germans were not invading, looting, colonisong and enslaving others and then burning down the villages and then demanding taxes, like the Romans have done all the time, dosent mean that they would have been "barbarians". At least not in the modern sense of whar barbarian means because "barbarian" back then simply meant/was a word for someone who is not a citizen of the Roman Empire as far as I know.

Arminius' story is really incredible. Born barbarian, raised as a roman, betrayed the empire for the sake of his "country", and eventually got killed by its own people. But as a fan of roman history, I feel I can share some useful insights here... Romans adventures across Rhine started to secure the empire's borders, not to conquer more territories. Germanic tribes were often ostile, that is why romans got there and tried to "romanize" them. That is something I think people tend to forget, but it explains a lot if you consider that the power of the two sides were much different. German tribes had to rely on ambushes to cope with roman legions, which were military superior at that time. Teutoburg was an ambush on a thin, long line of legionaries, that had no time to prepare for battle and were marching with their families (yes, there were plenty of women and children as well). That defeat has been avenged as some other users correctly pointed out, but Germanicus Julius Caesar was getting too popular and was sent far away from the emperor... After that romans gave definitely up on the romanization of that area, which was deemed not possible anymore. On the other side, romans crossed the rhine whenever they had to. Indeed after that period the empire continued to take slaves from the germanic tribes anyhow. Later on some protectorate were established and romans successfully fought other battles (e.g. Harzhorn)... At last we all know that things started to creak for the romans... I believe it's just beautiful how history teach us that the balance among countries is a cycle. No one is the most powerful forever and, sometimes, what goes around comes around!

@ModelTrainOutsider
@ModelTrainOutsider 5 жыл бұрын
@@kathyrene5075 Yes, Varus was warned, but the traitor was a known political rival of Arminius and Arminius had 20 years loyal military service to Rome behind him. Varus was not an idiot. The Roman accounts making him out that way were written decades after the battle at the real beginning of imperial expansion and are heavily tainted by Roman ego which could not accept being beaten by "barbarians." Varus had led legions in Syria with success, and quelled a rebellion in Judea. He just happened to be the guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. More credit needs to be given to Arnim/Hermann (his more likely Germanic name) for his brilliant battle plan and leadership, rather than bashing Varus.
@ModelTrainOutsider
@ModelTrainOutsider 4 жыл бұрын
@john doe No, Varus didn't lead them into the woods. He led them along the road between a mountain (hill) and the woods/swamp area. This was the road he was advised to follow by his guides who were part of the plot. The battle lasted at least 3 nights and maybe as many as 5- that is from the people who run the battlefield site in Bramsche, Germany. It was an intentional bottleneck because Hermann/Arminius knew the strengths and weaknesses of the Roman Legion marching formations. Roman historians who are quoted on the battle wrote many years after the battle (Tacitus, the most quoted, was 90 years later) and scapegoating was their primary goal as Roman ego could not accept being beaten by "barbarians." It had to be bad leadership. Varus was not an Alexander or Napoleon, but he was competent (and ruthless), based on his previous military campaigns. He was in a totally new environment and was put in the hands of the one man who plotted the betrayal. Yes, Varus was warned, but as I wrote previously, the guy warning him was from a tribe considered to be in rebellion and Hermann/Arminius was a long-standing commander of the Roman army. The plan was well laid and well executed. Sometimes, you just have to give credit to the other general. And, to answer other criticisms of my post- Augustus DEFINITELY had mental issues in his later years. His own contemporary biographers mentioned his episodes and that the defeat at Kalkriese haunted him to his death.

Varus governed Syria from 7/6 BC until 4 BC with four legions under his command, where he was known for his harsh rule and high taxes. The Jewish historian Josephus mentions the swift action of Varus against a messianic revolt in Judaea after the death of the Roman client king, Herod the Great, in 4 BC. After occupying Jerusalem, he crucified 2000 Jewish rebels. 9CE Varus himself, upon seeing all hope was lost in the Teutoburg Battle, committed suicide.

If anyone has seen the movie Centurion starring Michael Fassbender, this battle being depicted is similar to the movie battle. Huge Fireballs being used by the barbarians to ambush the Roman Legions. However if I'm not mistaken, the Germanic tribes didn't used fireballs in real life. Still a fascinating battle nonetheless. By the way if no one has seen the movie Centurion, you guys should. An amazing and very underrated film and superb performance by Michael Fassbender a.k.a Magneto from the X Men films.

Nice vid, but let me correct you in some point. In the begining more likely, that only Arminius's auxiliary forces (who's main task was to scout forward ) attacked the romans, and after the chieftains realised the real opportunity, they joined the assault as well. The battle was fought for several day, and in each day, Arminius ambushed the romans further weakening their lines. The only hope for the romans was, that Varus sent out his cavalry for reinforcements, but unfortunately they were ambushed as well.

Normal battles back then where mostly on open fields with larg armys standing off and that was also the roman strategy. But Arminius did a,, hit and regroup" tactic so theire numbers of the romams and the theire strategy where pointless. They had to fight 1 vs 1

This is entertaining but not a true account. The Germanic tribes had prepared a vast ' Cod Net ' of Woven lattice miles long with a wide opening and narrow end. With stakes and tens of thousands of warriors behind it. Varus being led by the traitor took his army unwittingly into the trap. The legions and cavalry were not able to carry put their mass military tactics in dense forest and their lines of communication more and more disrupted as twenty thousand men were spread put along the way. When they reached the narrow end of the trap the enemy attacked them. Cut off all retreat and over several days and nights destroyed the legions who were not able to manoeuvre due to their extended lines. No experienced General would have led his army into a forest but Varus was not a trained soldier. He was a political military appointee. It was a tragic end for a proud Roman army. Lions led by a donkey .

Hmm nice to see that the people here all just complain about Armenius. Well, decades of oppression in 100 of countries, enslavement, mass murder and exploitation brought the Romans. And then they kidnap children to train them like animals to do their dirty work. but not with Armenius he was and is a Cheruscian and he was the one who gathered the tribes and got it for the Romans as they love it the most from the back, because then the story spread throughout the Roman Empire and others were subdued fast courage and do it like him. And what's going on the Germanic peoples like Celts were put there is not nonsense, look at the great migration of the peoples times exactly and the story is the thousands and thousands of years old, the Celts come from here. Ireland england scotland there the celtic tribe and culture only lasted longer because of the situation of this country and that they were violently converted to christianity. But what can one explain the people of desen story just a few centuries old and can not see over the edge of the plate. Well, Caesar said it was already true and what a lie is the siger decides not the loser or with words of brennus "vae victis."

spectacular indeed but very far away from the real fact that happened in the true history of teoburg forest. There werent any fire rocks, its really stupid. How could this germanic warriors keep this Giant wheel burning in the middle of the forest and pretend to surprise the roman army that could easily see the smoke from it? Another considerations is related to the deploy of the armies. From the archeological remains we know now that Romans were unable to stablish a formation, just some isolated units seems to had the chance for that. it looks like the Battle was really complicated and dinamic, with each cohort struggle desperately for it own survival and trying to scape across the forest in a attempt to break the siege. It was finally not possible becuase the germans stablish even barriers in some parts of the way, barriers that was created for beign a kind of wooden walls, from this kind of fortress germans throw javalins to the romans that were trying to scape so they were forced to attempt even the assault. This kind of games are beautiful in terms of graphics and colours. Uniforms are also really very good customized with respect to the historical moment. But if you pretend to simulate a real battle this software clearly failed; its unable to create a even closely image of the historical facts. the product is still quite rude and not flexible at all. Is just a computer that could move hundreds of toons moving and fighting together with any logic or intelligence.
