I've used Tung Oil with wax over it and I have been thrilled at the finish and durability. I learned that from my father-in-law who has refinished antique furniture for decades. Sometimes the old ways can be a good option.

Excellent testing video! I too am a fan of Tung Oil and wax for antiques (usually Minwax Low sheen as I'm not a great lover of glossy finishes). The Varathane was another favourite of mine - until I discovered Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane (Clear Matte)! The equivalent of 3 coats in one application, quick drying, water based. It's worked really well on painted and bare/stained/chalk painted wood tabletops (forgiving with no coaster cold drink glasses too)! The finish is similar to a soft wax polish.

Great review! I’ve used every one of those products except the Hemp Oil. I used to use the Rustoleum Chalked sealer and got some terrible water spots on a table top that was awaiting client pickup, after a very brief encounter with a small splash of water. I’ve steered clear of that product since then. Great to know that the wax is pretty durable!

Hi Katie. You are a blessing. Thanks for the information. Quick question...Can you please do a piece on or off of the tube using those same finishes for up to 5-6 coats and then later come back and tell us the results? I was told to use polycrylic but with 5-6 coats and it will be as durable as the polyurethane. I have never tried it yet because I don't know which product to get for a brand new store bought dinette set that I only had for 5 months and the paint and finish is coming off after using cleaning. If I known what I know now I wouldn't have bought it. So now I am stuck with trying to find something to keep it from discoloration. I don't want to keep purchasing furniture being that I just started over. Also I am thinking about painting my bedroom set using Rustoleum Metallic Accent Paint but don't know what finish I need due to the fact that the paint is metallic and I want a matte metallic look with a low sheen. Can you please help me by telling me what I should use to resolve both of these issues? Thank you ever so much I would greatly appreciate it.

I've used General Finishes High Performance Top Coat and Varathane Crystal Clear Water Based Polyurethane on my projects and I find them to be very frustrating to work with at times, but fell in love with General Finishes ARM-R-SEAL oil based polyurethane.
