I had both and sold the Samyang 18mm as I found there was too much distortion, it was making people's faces and arms look fat - it was so prominent that anyone in the 20% of the left/right of the image would complain. I tried 2 separate Samyang 18mm lenses and while both were bad, 1 of them was noticeably worse than the other, so they seem to suffer from quality control issues too. The Viltrox 20mm is fantastic though.

@@DigiDriftZone thanks for sharing. Dose your viltrox 20mm also have serious flaring issue?
@DigiDriftZone4 ай бұрын
@@ConstantineSPhotography nope none! I was worried about flaring as that was a problem with the 12mm Samyang I had for Fuji APSC, less so on the 18mm FE and non existent in the Viltrox.

I'm surprised to hear that. Maybe I got a bad sample. I still love this lens, but once I noticed the flaring issue, it becomes difficult to ignore.
@DigiDriftZone4 ай бұрын
@@ConstantineSPhotography oh maybe! Flaring was worse for me on the 18mm, but both weren’t terrible, not like older Samyang lenses that are awful.

Hello. I have the Sony ZVe10 abd a kit lens 16-50 f3.5 5.6, and my question is if this lens the Viltrox 20 mmf 2.8 is sharper and with better contrast that the kit lens? Because when I zoom in the contrast lows and sharpness becomes quite soft in 4K Thanks
@ConstantineSPhotography7 ай бұрын
I don't have that kit lens to try, but according to the reviews on the internet, I'd say the Sony kit lens is a more convenient setup, since it has 16-50mm zoom and also lens stabilization and power zoom, but for sharpness I believe the Viltrox 20 mm f 2.8 is sharper

Excellent video. I've been watching reviews of both cameras all day, but I made my decision after watching yours. I decided to get the Samyang, due to the increased contrast. The Viltrox produces quite a "washed out" image when there are high contrast scenes (ie white sky or bright streetlights). Thank-you for this!
@ConstantineSPhotography5 ай бұрын
Thank you very much, I'm really glad you find it helpful. I didn't notice the low contrast look when I reviewed the Viltrox lens alone, but when compared with the Samyang lens, it's quite obvious.

Awesome review/comparison. This justified my purchase of the Samyang 18mm F2.8 that I use on my ZV-E1. ZV-E1 & samyang 18mm combo is so lightweight,perfect for vlogging, gimbal & travel. Just buy the samyang. Samyang is wider esp if you use Dynamic active stabilization & has better contrast. The white haze or glow on that Viltrox is like you have black pro mist filter on the lens.

Great video, thanks for making it! So glad that we have a choice between two great and affordable lenses. It's fantastic that Sony allows third party lenses. I think I will go with the Samyang as it offers that little extra angle that is quite useful to add some extra spice to the image, even though it's almost twice the price in Europe.
@ConstantineSPhotographyАй бұрын
Thanks for supporting! The extra two angle can make great difference. I think the price gap is about the same in Asia too🥲🥲

I don't own any of these two lenses but im in the market for one . Idk if its just me but the viltrox looks hazy , samyang seems way sharper and better contrast . What is keeping me back from buying the samyang is the lack of usb port for updates and the reported quality diffrences from one copy to another...
@ConstantineSPhotography7 күн бұрын
I agree with you on the haze from the viltrox lens, the samyang lens does look sharper. I'm not sure it's just the problem of my specific lens or it's all the same.

Samyang: horrendous busy bokeh Viltrox: horrid flaring and bloom If you complain to Viltrox that their quality is not reaching exceptional levels, they will listen to you and put out a new version of the lens. That is the mindset of Viltrox. They recently removed their 35/1.8 and 50/1.8 from the market because they weren't good enough for the Viltrox name. The 35 was fringy and not sharp enough and the 50 had bad onion-ringing. The 20/2.8 is a good lens if you can deal with the vintage blooming effect. It is much more cinematic looking than the Samyang but the flaring is a problem that will realistically mess up your shots unless you are trying to control it. I hope a mark II can improve with element coatings.
@ConstantineSPhotography23 күн бұрын
The flaring problem from the Viltrox lens does bother me sometimes, but I thought it's just my specific lens' problem, instead of a general problem of this lens.
