I took a look at the three main small form factor SBC. They all have the same form factor as the Raspberry Pi Zero. Let’s see how the Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, the Radxa Zero 3W, and the Orange Pi Zero 2W compare in a few different categories.

They want to, but the problem is that there aren't RAM modules that fit in the specific form factor that the Pi Foundation is looking for. This isn't a problem on the other boards because they put components on the bottom, but the Pi has a smooth bottom which complicates things.

I asked on the raspberry pi forum about why the current versions of the OS were not listed. I got no answer and my post was removed without explanation. I guess it's not something they want to talk about. You have download the current image from the web site and then can choose it from the Imager. The other factor to consider is the community that can support the device. Despite problems with the Raspberry Pi forums and the occasional toxicity of the Raspberry Pi Reddits, I think the Raspberry products still win here. Delighted. :D

Microlinix has a great (3rd party) Armbiam image for the Zero 2 Pro that works incredibly well and Joshua Riek has Ubuntu Desktop images for Rockchip. I don't know if he has a Radxa Zero 3W image yet, but I suspect he will as there's one for the Orange Pi 3B which runs on the same processor as the 3W and is pretty decent. The downside of both boards and to be you get the best performance out of them, at least as of now, from third party images.

I was so delighted to see a video comparing the boards i have just been researching for a quadruped! RPI has the best SBC base, but their boards are just mediocer now considering the technology availability like in the Nvidia jetson Orin. I really need a form factor like these or even the compute modules (comparison suggestion!?), but almost landed on the Radxa for the SoC alone. Considering how amateur my knowledge is on programming, it looks like RPIZ2W is the safest option.

I was delighted and appreciate the time you invested. I have and OrangePi with 1.5Mb and the expansion board to make embedded development, easier, (Ethernet speeds things up) I had hopes of using the 24 pin pin connector in place of the 40 gpio pins for some embedded apps, but it appears to be connected to an ASIC chip which locks in the pin functions. One disappointment in the Orangepi is the lack of GPU support in all the linux distributions, maybe it works in android? The vast variety of ready to run Raspberry pi code gives that board a huge advantage for rookies who need to build on to a working code base.

Looking at supported OSes by number of available images is very misleading. You should check out how fast manufacturer abandons support for their boards. For example I have "Orange Pi One" which had Ubuntu and Debian images available in ~2020. And zero updates after that. So while I have few perfectly working hardware boards none of these are usable due to lack of up to date software side (and I don't want to run old, vulnerable OSes). Raspberry Pi OS (32bit) supports ALL existing raspberry pi boards and is still updated/maintained.

I have several of all 3 of these little sbcs, I have to agree with you on most of these points. I love the the raspberry pi but that .5g of ram makes it impossible to use as a desktop, but it plays videos well, the orange pi has the best desktop feel and is great for that but none of the OS except android are able to utilize the gpu for encoding or decoding and it absolutely sucks for video playback. The radxa has gpu support for video and does ok as a desktop but for some reason is super laggy in the OS.

I agree with most of what you said. I have both the Raspberry Pi 2w and the Orange Pi 2w. I use mostly usb cameras as I have had some issues with the cameras that use the camera connector. It could be the new camera stack though. I like both though I wish the raspberry Pi zero 2w has more memory selections. There is really no reason for them not to as their competitors do. I certainly would pay a little more for more memory. I really like the Raspberry Pi's sofware support though. No other board has this nor is the software of other companies as easy to use. I use these boards most with 3d printers so I would be installing either Octoprint or klipper. Klipper is available for any Linux computer and is easy to install using the kiauh script. Octoprint though is extremely difficult to install on anything but a Raspberry pi though I did manage to install it on a Orange Pi 3 LTS and should be a similar process for the Orange Pi Zero 2w though it will likely be difficult as it is all done manually. One thing I did not understand when you said the Raspberry Pi Zero 2w was sluggish when using the legacy OS. When I tried mine I first used the standard OS, but was so slow as to be unusable. When I switched to the Legacy OS, it actually ran fairly well. I would never use a web browser on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2w because of the fact it only has 512mb of RAM and if I did, I would not use more than one tab. I probably would not run any video files either because of the Low RAM. But other than that the Raspberry Pi Zero 2w ran okay. Still wish it had more RAM. A very bad design decision if you ask me.

Nothing starts perfect, first RPi came out after a lot of struggles. I'm delighted to see competition for hobbyists. And actual big improvement over the first "orangepi zero" many years ago. That one was disaster when it comes to support and documentation. It was only thanks to open source community and Armbian project it became somewhat usable. On the other hand RPi was almost always losing when it comes to pure processing power. Even now RK3588 based products basically obliterate Pi5, but RPi strength is easy of use, great support and documentation. Big weakness is availability of top products.

Just getting into SBCs this year. Since I bought an OP5+, I will likely use their zero. One thing is for sure, I am staying away from Raspberry Pi for the most part because there is no point investing in hardware from a company that can't meet demand. Meanwhile Orange Pi has also designed a Ryzen based handheld PC to compete in that growing market because they have the capacity for forethought. They also had the good sense to give the OP5 a NPU. The RP5 seems like it should have launched about 2 years ago, based on specs. The official software for the OP5 seemed pretty crap but the enthusiast modded version of Ubuntu for RK3588(S) works fine. It is just a better machine than the RP5 anyway. Since I am planning to study cybersecurity later this year and want to get back into coding, being handheld by RPT along the way isn't really what I was looking for anyway. However, I might get a RP5 4GB to use as a firewall because it is the most cost effective and expedient solution I've found. I could just use one of my old 3rd gen i5 S series CPUs and one of several old Lenovo workstation MBs I already have but that's gonna use like 10x the power.

Raspberry pi's were never meant to be used as a full pc and their gpio drivers and pytbon packages are easy to use and this is what all people forget the pi was meant for. I know its now more marketed towards the general user but rather use a mini pc then a sbc if you really demand things

RPI docs are fine for basic users. After all these years they still lack driver support for the full functionality of the chips they use.

Yeah, it's good to have the basics so you can figure out the rest. Other SBCs don't even have the basics

You can’t use a browser on 512mb of ram. Those things burn some 800mb when they try to fully compress so the raspberry zero never even had a chance.

I. Agree with pretty much everything you said. I would give Radxa even less points for the documentation but, the top comment right now is from them saying they will look into it. Promises mean nothing but them watching this and bothering to comment is better than nothing. It's an ongoing project. And. Well. The board would be so dang good if the documentation was in check.

Yeah, it's nice that they are seeing the responses but would like to see actual improvements in documentation

delighted. i've been disappointed with the rpi zero 2w's performance over the years with portable projects. got the orange pi zero 2w 1.5yrs ago since it looks good on paper but disappointed with the docmentation and lack of any proper support that i couldn't do anything with it. even with usb c it still does not have any proper options of cases and cannot fit into any rpi zero 2w case because of the usb port opening even though the form factor is pretty much the same. plus, as you have stated about google drive, it is sketchy place to download questionable os isos which could have malware, because china tends to do that with default os software. there still needs to be a good board option with the form factor of the rpi zero 2w with wide support and good case options to fit a variety of potential projects. disappointed there is nothing like that around. many times the only option is probably a used smart phone or a larger sbc.

Available software, documentation, eco system, and support in my opinion, always trump impressive hardware specs. With Raspberry Pi, just about whatever you can think off, someone will have done it, or something sufficiently similar, so it can be adapted. Whatever problem you are having, someone will had had it before and share the solution. This is why I'm always reluctant to move away from Raspberry Pi and Arduino.
