The Battle of Toba-Fushimi (鳥羽・伏見の戦い Toba-Fushimi no Tatakai) occurred between pro-Imperial and Tokugawa shogunate forces during the Boshin War in Japan. The battle started on 27 January 1868 (or Keiō-4 year, 1-month, 3-day, according to the Japanese calendar), when the forces of the Tokugawa shogunate and the allied forces of Chōshū, Satsuma and Tosa Domains clashed near Fushimi, Kyoto. The battle lasted for four days, ending in a decisive defeat for the Tokugawa shogunate.

Their battle animations still the best, the other TW series like rome, warhammer etc are only stab, push with shields, but Shogun 2 we can always see the swordplay

Funny enough, a lot of people complained about the matched combat animations of Rome 2(it also caused some weird unit behaviour). I am actually glad they went back to the old style with Warhammer. It feels more dynamic and less robotic. Battles have more weight to them in warhammer like the old total wars.

There is no phone in the past, or better yet, trust a pigeon to deliver. Besides, deliver the letter is an excuse, the shogun only wanted to suppress the rebellion in Kyoto.

@@kasumi2173 Even if Japan have telegraphs, the shogun will still deliver the letter through an army, it is more a message as he is just marching to Kyoto to arrest Saigo Takomori and his followers and maybe the Emperor to suppress the latest dissident against the Shogunate rule. Unfortunatley, the Shogun only just started the civil war at the Battle of Toba Fushimi

This is an amazing video edit from the Total War series. Creative Assembly should've learn from you on how to make great trailers. Is it possible for you to capture a battle with 40 units vs 40 units? Seeing hundreds of soldiers in a swordplay would be a feast for the eye.

旧幕府軍は刀や槍など中心ですが 新政府軍は銃や大砲など中心 なので兵力では旧幕府軍が圧倒的ですが武器や戦術からすると新政府軍が圧倒的ですね。

薩長軍の主力武器はまだ先込式ミニエー銃、幕府軍がフランスから輸入されたシャスポー銃、後装式歩兵銃である。確かに薩長軍にアームストロング砲数門が配備されていたが、人数、火力を合わせてやはり幕府軍の方が有利である。その失敗の原因は敵の火力に圧倒されるどころが総大将徳川慶喜自身が戦意を失って消極的な指揮で招いた結果

Wait. In real both sides were equiped with rifles and uniforms... There were some samuraies in traditional armour but mostly were equiped with uniform... It was battle Rifle vs Rifle mostly. French advicers teached shogun forces how to fight with european tactics and weapons

Both sides were modernized during this war. There were very few traditional units left. Most of the traditional units were cavalry as that role's tactics mostly stood unchanged during this time period. Foreign trade in rifled muskets and cannons began some time before the Boshin War. The Shogun bought many weapons from the western powers. However, the trade deals with the westerners favored themselves, leading to the loss of wealth among Japanese traders. Emperor Meiji overruled the Shogun, he said he would stop modernization and send the foreigners away. He did neither. Instead he allied himself with the British and Americans who sold the Imperial loyalists weapons and trained soldiers. Meanwhile, the Shogun allied himself with France. I think the first side to modernize was the Shogunate, as the Imperialists fought against modernization. However, it was up to each domain if they wanted to modernize. Most of the foreign trade occurred in the south of Japan, where two Imperial loyal domains, the Satsuma and the Saga were located. They would've probably been the first Imperialists to modernize, while the northern domains loyal to the Shogun would've been the last Shogunate loyalists to modernize. As for the accuracy of this video, I agree that both sides should be using modern percussion cap, rifled muskets.

I've said this before, further development to improve Shogun II stopped after Fall of the Samurai's release. (Blame the Rome fanboys who screamed and pressured Creative Assembly to churn out Rome II as fast as possible)
