Battle of Vaslui - It is the dead of winter, January 10th 1475. On this day Stefan III, the Prince of Moldavia, leads an army of 30.000 Christian warriors into battle against an invading army of more than 50.000 Ottomans, commanded by Suleiman Pasha, the governor-general of Rumelia. Suleiman was sent by the Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed II - the Conqueror, to permanently crush all resistance and re-establish Ottoman control over Moldavia, after it's ruler Prince Stefan III stopped paying tribute and began hostile operations against the Ottoman Empire. Suleiman's army is confident of victory, but the crafty Prince of Moldavia will soon become one of the few men in history who faced such unfavorable odds and yet managed to seriously threaten the mighty Ottoman Empire. Years of conflict between the Princedom of Moldavia and the Ottoman Empire has reached the snow-covered plain near the town of Vaslui , and a battle known locally as the Battle of the High Bridge is about to begin...

HistoryMarche An interesting clip but Moldova which was taken by Stefan from Petru Aron It was more bigger, Transylvania was an autonomous kingdom and the "kingdom of Hungary" was much smaller and under no circumstances incorporates modern austria and the other Balkan territories, there are some mistakes in video and please do not use those contaminated maps about the "kingdom of Hungary". Thank you

The eye naturally thinks darker parts of the map are land. Stop making the sea darker than the land. It's really annoying. Especially when you contour the map to look like land is of a lower altitude than the sea...

In 1475, king Matthias Corvinus ruled the Kingdom of Hungary, who also conquered Austria, Bohemia and other nearby regions. The map presented here it's accurate. Transylvania was a "voievodat" under hungarian control. It had some kind of autonomy, but it was not independent, nor a kingdom.

My ancestors left Bulgaria after the Ottomans invasion and started a new live in Moldavia. Unbelieveable that this Guy probably saved my family tree. I watched already dozen videos of this channel and Ștefan cel Mare seems to be on another level. Destroying own territory against the enemy was in Napoleon against Kutuzov. Cavalry harrassment back and forth was used by mongols against romans or muslims against crusaders. Attacking the enemy while they are on the mushy ground. I think that was also used for example by William Wallace against heavy English cavalry. The bridge attack to cut off the enemy. Using drums to adopt the enemy for the attack and then fake it the next time. I have now huge respect for Ștefan and thank you for this video!

I live in Suceava, the former capitol city of Moldavia, and during my school times, we learned a lot about Stephan the Great and those times. He was the best military strategist, hands down, and because of this, he ruled Moldavia for 47 years, being second after Carol I, who ruled for 48 years, in the late 1800's - early 1900's. Stephan had his share of losses (albeit a few), mainly because being heavily outnumbered. His battle and war strategies were superior to anyone else, Poles, Hungarians, even Franks and Gemanic people. Luck had never played any role, and the man fought over 50 major battles during his rule, and a bunch of smaller ones, losing only 2. He was the master of guerilla warfare, tactical and fake retreats, multiple front engagements, luring enemy troops, terrain strategist, etc. etc. He was hundreds of years ahead in terms of military startegy, this is why he managed to rule 47 years, a very small country (300-400k total population), having only 6-7k professional soldiers. Over 60% of his army was basically peasants (usually 10-15k, depending on the time of the conflict - Summer being harvest time). However, those peasants, after 4-5 major battles, became at least semi-professional soldiers, hence, his army, after 5 years, was mainly a professional army. He won a lot of battles being outnumbered 2 to 1, which in those times was a lot...but his professional soldiers outnumbered the enemy professional soldiers. Paired with guerilla warfare (his soldiers were extremely good at this), terrain advantage and multiple front engagements, it's no surprise that he managed to keep Moldavia undefeated for nearly 47 times. Even if the history books don't present him as a warrior, the man had war in his blood. He was present at every single battle...not sitting on a chair on a hill giving orders, but leading the troops. And this is how he died. An infected battle wound marked his end.

I totally agree with you, Dustin. By the way, his full historical name is Stefan the Great and the Saint as the Romanian Orthodox Church sanctified him for being the greatest Christian warrior of Romania and one of the bravest Holly Cross defenders of Europe in his time. We owe Stefan the Great to a great extent the fact we are still Christians in these parts of the world and we still speak our ancient version of Latin that is the Romanian language. Cheers!

@@RS-kt6is It's very easy to throw with empty words online. 1. Was Stefan the Great one of the greatest military personalities of the Romanian nation? And one of the greatest Christian military leaders, at least in his century? Yes, he was. 2. Was he a Romanian? Yes. Moldavians are Romanians, end of story. 3. Did he greatly contributed to the salvation of his state, Moldova, to avoid becoming the next Bosnia or Albania? No discussion about that, in all respects, security, culture, policy of alliances etc. 4. Was he sanctified by the Romanian Orthodox Church? The Orthodox Christians of whole nation pray to him. 5. Is the Romanian language a neo-Latin language, with 60% of the words coming form Latina vulgaris? I think it qualifies. Do we understand to a certain extent the Italians when they speak even if we had no previous knowledge of Italian? Certo

Stefan the Great is celebrated as a Saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Along side with Constantin Brancoveanu, Neagoe Basarab. He was called " The Athelete Of Christ ". He also defeated the Hungarian, Poles, Tatars. He raised a Monastery for every victory he ever had. His Spiritual Father was saint Danil Sihastrul ( Danil the Hermit) , which he consulted every time.

He's arguably one of the best Romanian Principality rulers. But he was also quite fears. He was well known for beheading the Boieri that wavered or plotted against him. That was likely due to the traumatic childhood he had. His father was assassinated before him and there's another cool legend that you should check out about his childhood. Google The Oak from Borzesti Church.

Stephan the Great was a military genius. He employed military tactics like guerilla warfare and tactical retreats on a whole new level. Hundreds of years ahead his time. Sure, guerilla warfare was used since before Roman Empire, but Stephan made it an art. The way he used guerrilla warfare was similar to Napoleonic Wars, 300 years later.

That was a Hungarian leader, Janos Hunyady. They don’t say that in Romanian history books because Ceausescu wanted Transylvania to have some heroic military leaders so as not to humiliate them when compared to Wallachia and Moldavia. They used his Romanianized name. The truth is that Transylvania never had a great military leader, people there were always serfs and they accepted their condition. Only the szekelys had pride and dignity and they fought alongside Wallachian and Moldavian leaders to gain freedom. The unification of Romania (1601), re-unification (1918) and liberation (September 1944) all came from the South and into Transylvania. Not the other way around.

Small states like Moldavia and Wallachia cold offer limited resistance and usually ended up being conquered by the Ottomans. Overall, the Ottomans were quite successful against European kingdoms for hundreds of years.

@@HistoryMarche Yes, I'm very well aware of the Ottomans being a major world power at the time, that is why I love to see those rare cases when things didn't go their way ;) Here in Slovenia we have some stories and songs from that time. Thanks again for all the great content you've been making. History is awesome!

Fun fact: Stephen won 34 out of 36 battles he fought during his reign being most of the time outnumbered by powerful states like the Ottoman Empire, Kingdom of Hungary, Kingdom of Poland.

Good work Stephan and you. Not knowing the battle, the beginning looks bad for Stephen, in term of army lists and with wallachia following the ottomans. But this guy is a genius! I like the decoy drums . Sun Zu would have liked this battle. A battle almost won before its beginning. A battle where fog of war means something.

In the USA most history books tend to Very quickly gloss over Eastern European and Ottoman history-Vlad tepes, Lepanto, siege of Viena/Malta/Constantinople and a couple others might get mentioned but it is nice to see others I have not heard of-always love to learn more :)

That was the battle that stop Muslim expansion to Easter Europe, like forever, after his cousin Vlad "The Impaler"caused another Ottoman campaign to crumble in the dust during the night of 16-17 June 1462. Romanians were the stone that the ottomans could never chew, as Habsburgs and Russian Empire. We bent but we were never broke, a small and insignificant people, at the convergence of four "Grate Neighbors"(The Habsburg Empire, The Polish-Lithuanian Empire, The Ottoman Empire, and The Russian Tsarist Empire). Because of Roman heritage we knew the best how to use the Latin expression "Divide et impera", we used them against each other to assure our survival.
