Man, I love this show! I'm a bit more forgiving, because it didn't have a huge budget and it showed, but it still looks (mostly) nice. And being longer, they adapted more of the books than the movies did. And they even managed to adapt the next two books! Irulan's subplot was not only labored and ultimately pointless, but it also makes Paul's treatment of her problematic. The book's Irulan was raised a manipulative bene geserit and statesperson. It seemed fitting that her plans of control were thwarted, and only after that is she given a redemption. In the miniseries she not only reaches out to Paul on a personal level even before he would be a statehood target, but she seeks to uncover the truth of the attack on his house. She becomes a relatable character on the side of good, only to be snubbed and treated like a political pawn by Paul.
@October-sw3pt Жыл бұрын
I see your point, but isn't her snubbing and submission ultimately part of her tragedy? And might this be a hint that the actions of the "good" guy can be objectively not good? I'm not sure if this is giving the miniseries too much credit, but I'd argue some of that is thematically consistent.

We've now had the 1984 film, the 2000 TV series, and the 2021 film. None are perfect, but each brought their own thing to the table. 1984 had the best cast, best sets and costumes, and best overall visual aesthetic. 2000 series had best alignment to source material and spent the most time with the story, and in a lot of ways took some of the biggest risks. 2021 film had the best effects and sound, but honestly I'm still trying to figure out why it exists because it's not going to tell as much of the story as the TV series did, so it'll always be inferior from that perspective, and all it's really doing is putting a pretty coat of paint on a derivative work.

Chalamet was great in Dune 1, but I can't imagine him as the later versions of Paul. Hoping to be positively surprised of course. Also, loved some of the costumes. IIRC Irulan's guards had this weird woven hood thing that looked both like a beret and chainmail. That's just the kind of impractical yet reminiscent of ancient badasses detail I'd expect from the ceremonial garb of future warriors. Might have been the Lynch movie and I'm just getting old. Confronted with a world that couldn't be done justice on a TV budget (or, let's be honest here, a feature film budget at the time in most producers' hands), they just decided to scale it way back and shoot it very much like a stage play with VFX. If they'd leaned a little harder into it in the scenes where they didn't need to (palace interiors, for example) it would have been less jarring when they did it where they did (caves and exteriors). I'd have loved a whole series that was essentially a theatrical production of Dune, shot on film, with sparing use of CGI.

I too was introduced to Dune by this miniseries. And for that I am grateful. But what was a visual masterpiece for kid me doesn't hold up. I still want to rewatch it though. Of course, the only SF I had seen at that point was ST, SW, Galaxy Quest, and Starship Troopers.

10:30 I would say, a man acting as a teenager is more realistic as he was raised in opulence. He's never had to grow as a person because he's never had to struggle until he arrived on Arrakis. So he played it perfectly.

I can only hear Matt Keeslar’s Feyd Ruatha going, “I’m not the Kwisatz Haderach. I’m just the Middleman.” (Congrats to the ten other people out there who watched that show.)

This version of Dune was actually very well done, especially given their budget. The costumes … hats, so many silly hats! This from a guy who is never far from a fairly silly hat himself. It's interesting that you appreciate the costuming because it's the part I think most people find relatively weak and strange. I have to agree about the casting for Gurney, but I loved this version of the Baron Harkonnen! Not gross, not alien, completely human. The intelligence, the plotting, and all of the menace I'd thought could be conveyed on screen. (I was wrong looking at Denis Villeneuve's adaptation, but that adaptation is missing the humanity and does not convey the intelligence well.) The thing about this miniseries that most made it feel more theatrical than cinematic was the use of colored lighting that was so obviously floods with colored gels, like a theater performance. I don't know if I would have been as forgiving of its budgetary shortcomings had I not read the book first, but I _had_ read the book and found the miniseries competent if constrained by a TV budget.

I actually originally watched this miniseries on TV then bought the DVD which I will view once in a while, especially on a cold and snowy afternoon. This adaptation was very European in flavor and execution. It’s as if a diluted Jodorowsky version finally got made. I seem to be the only person on this planet who preferred Alec Newman’s Maud’Dib to Kyle MacLachlan’s depiction. On the whole, this miniseries is a curiosity, nothing more.
@brianjungen4059 Жыл бұрын
You’re not. Alec was awesome and Kyle was an embarrassment as was the entire 1984 film.

I like all versions for different reasons. I like the new version the best. Denis did a fantastic job. Sooo, I describe all the versions like this: the Lynch version was a cartoon. The miniseries was a weekend at your local dinner theater. Villenuve’s version was like watching Shakespeare at the Paris Opera House.

Dune 84' was my first introduction to the theatrical universe of Frank Herbert but it was the Dune Miniseries that explained this complex world and Dune 2021 to finally appreciate it's stylized storytelling. Dune still holds the sci-fi title as the best space opera compared to those "streaming service" corporations. #shotsfired #slowbladepenatratestheshield

I remember seeing this on German TV for the first time. As someone who was mesmerized by the first Dune Movie, I was aghast by the terrible CGI and boxy Ornithopter. Also for me, there was always something off with the set decoration. It looks like every cheap Sci-Fi channel show (which is it) that displays its strange plastic-like decorations in weird lighting that enhances its flaws and cheap look. In short, this series utterly fails at immersion and set dressing.

I honestly did not mind a mini series I actually rather enjoyed it. It is not aged well. But you can tell based on the technology we had at the time and I'm sure the limited special-effects budget they had the look of the miniseries has not aged well. but very much and entertaining so was second one they brought out a children of Dune which is basically Dune messiah and children of Dune mash together.

I love the David Lynch Dune movie, and I love this mini series. Yes, they both had their issues, but considering what they were trying to adapt I feel both did an excellent job in their own way. As for the mini series though, yeah, Moriarty was a terrible choice, he really did stand out and in a bad way. I wince every time I see him speaking on screen. And yes, that self same warehouse blown up a dozen times, but for different battles is so obvious. I try to give it the benefit of the doubt because the writing and acting, for the most part, is just so good, but it is a shame the budget didn't give them the latitude to really make this something akin to Game of Thrones in space which is what it is.
@Blisterdude123 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I'd agree he's not the world's best actor. But I genuinely have a soft spot for his portrayal of Gurney Halleck. It's entirely subjective, I get that, but for me his rough and earthy performance is what sells it. His version of Gurney comes across as so grounded and honest and straightforward. Blunt and truthful and lacking a certain social grace. Like unwittingly the untailored acting to me makes him seem as genuine, lacking any kind of inherent deception of deceit as I feel Gurney should. He's an open book to Paul, and us, and that makes Moriarty's iteration endearing to me.
@sashaburrow6186 Жыл бұрын
All of the adaptations so far have their flaws - Lynch's was highly compromised by the final edit, the mini series by its low budget, wooden actors and awful costumes, and Villeneuve's by just being bland and ignoring half the story. They also all have their good points too - though that usually comes down to personal taste on what you consider the good points to be.

dune 2000 and children of dune are probably my favourite adaptions of the series. followed by dune (1984) then finally the new stuff which is all style little substance (plus shooting lasers at things with shields which really irked me big time)
@exidy-yt Жыл бұрын
Thank God I am not the only one. The new movie I find to be by far the worst of the three both for casting and for world issues, the shield-lasgun interaction being one of the standouts. The miniseries (the first one, anyway) was probably as close an adaptation of the the source as we're going to get.

Honestly, I still look at this as the definitive version of Dune. They had more time to cover more of the books, and I felt they did it pretty faithfully. We'll see how it all wraps with Denis' version though. He seems to be off to a good start.

Nice commentary. Despite any flaws, I want to rewatch this series. All the best! Aside: While it's not an accurate representation, David Lynch's Dune remains my favorite adaptation to date. Why hasn't the fabled nine hour version surfaced? It stands alone. I only wish Alejandro Jodorowsky had been able to fulfill his vision. It'd be interesting to see the rough cut of Lynch's film (allegedly over four hours long) and I'd love to see his intended cut (allegedly just shy of three hours long).

At the time, I was happy to see a version that covered more of the novel than Lynch's version could. I did note the low production values but that's the best we could hope for. No way was a film studio going to remake such a failure. I was hoping Sci-Fi Channel would do more straight adaptations of famous novels but then they made Riverworld and that was dashed. Then they barely made any sci-fi anymore. Odd that this version leaves out the Mentats.

One of the things that makes the mini-series stand out is that the Fremen/Islam connection will never be explored in the same level of detail again in a post-9/11 world. I think that having expired that theme will make this version one of the best versions of Dune ever.

This definitely was my definitive on-screen version of Dune although I think I read the books first so that's likely why I prefer it despite its problems. Backdrops aside, I like the costuming, lighting and vibrancy of the miniseries much more than the washed out look of the new films; although I do hope that they'll make it the God Emperor storyline and beyond with the new films.

Personally, I respect storytelling more than visual dazzle. Out of the three, 1984, mini series, and the latest theatrical release, I enjoy and respect the mini series and find it superior even to the latest movie. The experience is not complete without watching the sequel series, Children of Dune. I highly recommend.

Thanks. My "intro" to Dune was reading it when I was about 12, and I've been waiting for a decent adaptation ever since. '84 totally failed for me. This m/s was good. I've not re-watched recently, I think I'll put it on my list. Of course, Denis Villeneuve's film has set a new standard - I look forward to part 2.
