@Julien I think you're having a Mandela effect on your brain with this gun. If I recall correctly he was referring to the ones you find still around today are usually fine. The people around during the time of the war when the gun was new was a different story. A lot of those guns with issues I think got killed off by natural selection or fixed in a way to prevent problems now. Most of the modern ones you find might tend to be okay, but is okay to at least check to be safe.

My 3 Scout loadouts have the M1903 marksman, the SMLE Carbine and Martini Henry, the Ross is replacing one of them. It just feels good to use.

I actually own a Ross Mk III and an Enfield No. 4 Mk I. The Enfield is by far the simpler rifle and with practise can be very quick (such as the Mad Minute), and will gladly eat any ammunition vaguely shaped like a .303 British. Aside from the single stack/ single feed magazine, the Ross is the more evolved design and the bolt operation is naturally smoother and faster. It is however a picky eater as sub-par or loosely manufactured ammunition is almost guaranteed to jam it. Also, while it is possible to assemble the bolt incorrectly and have an out-of-battery detonation, the bolt stop is usually strong enough to prevent the bolt from completely leaving the rifle. You'll still get injured of course.

I don’t know why, but this gun seems to get one-hit-kills more than any other gun in the game for me. I don’t have the marksman version since I don’t have the apocalypse DLC, but I would prefer the infantry version even if I did. Probably my favourite rifle in the game, and I only started using it because I got a legendary skin from a post round crate.

It was basically designed as a sporting rifle first and foremost and it was forced into a role it was never really meant to do, e.g. fight in trench warfare. Mud can and will stop any gun if it can get into the action (Mosin-Nagants, for instance, are notorious for not being able to seal mud out even when the bolt's closed and that can prevent the user from even opening the bolt), and because Ross pushed for his rifle to be adopted by the CEF, it got ramped up to a massive production without having the same testing and quality that more established military powers had for centuries. The British actually sent inspectors over to help troubleshoot the rifles and I think after the third major revision (after correcting the numerous flaws the rifle had as a combat rifle) it was finally an effective and reliable rifle, but by then the government and army had lost faith in the rifle (for good reason) and the SMLE was in the process of being adopted. As the video said, the Ross rifle was exceptionally accurate and a favorite for snipers, and the most effective sniper of the war was actually a native Canadian. Long story short, as long as the rifle was kept clean and out of the mud, it was exceptional. However, it was exactly the wrong kind of warfare for that kind of weapon.

I guess that's the American in me speaking then - we have a culture that if something can't hold up to the toughest of rigors, it's totally worthless. I guess in certain applications, this is true, but I can see great appeal in a rifle that works everywhere else. (Also, yes, I have heard that this rifle was favored by one of the war's most prominent sharpshooters for its unparalleled accuracy.)

what servers does this guy plays on?? because in the real BF1 you never get to see so many enemies in open spaces just laying there so you could line a headshot. All the guys are prone hidden and wait for you to come. But I agree, I love this sniper, got addicted to it, that kick back I get when I shoot, oh man!! You can feel the weight of the bullet piercing the enemy!

Our Rifles didn't work because of poor quality British ammo which led to many of the issues above. ALSO, Mr Ross was well known to be a temperamental, violent asshole with a lawsuit against him for throttling a man near to death. ALSO also this was the rifle of choice by the TOP sniper in WW1 with over 300 comfirmed kills. SEE: SABBATON: A GHOST IN THE TRENCHES FOR that story.

Makes me wonder if RELIABILITY attribute would be a nice thing to have for guns in BF1. E.g. one gun has better stats than competition, but low reliability makes it jam occasionally or even break down, so you have to switch to your secondary or search for a kit to pick up. I would like it i think!

Hell no. Part of good game design is knowing what to expect. Every class has their own integrity, i.e. you can always expect from a Scout to be good at long range and from an Assault to be good at close range. A reliability attribute just adds randomness and destroys this “knowing what to expect”. Games play by certain rules. Adding rules that are random is horse shit. Might as well give everyone a random amount of health then.

You got a point. Although I was talking about a choice between reliable (“knowing what to expect”) average gun and unreliable but superior. Say, you jumped into dirt or swam sea with your OP-but-unreliable gun and it breaks - it just gives you extra choice to make, pick reliable gun or play the dice.

In MP competitive game yes. But BF1 has gone quite far from being competitive (i.e. tournaments friendly) I think.

Not only from a competitive standpoint. It’s just annoying. Either the person on the receiving end will be annoyed because they got killed by an obviously overpowered weapon or the person behind the trigger will be annoyed because his gun is constantly jamming. Either way someone is going to be annoyed by such a weapon. Nobody is going to sit there “it was fair that he killed me because I know his gun could’ve jammed”. Just like people always complain about getting killed by shotguns or sniper rifles. They will not consider movement or placement and just see how they died unfairly. On the other side the person using the weapon will lose gunfights he should have won just because the gun decided to jam. At this point it’s just a frustrating experience when a gunfight is just decided by whose weapon doesn’t jam. It’s just rolling the Dice at this point. No skill involved. Straight up getting more damage isn’t anything skillful either. There are so many better, less frustrating ways to balance a game. Things like that would annoy even the most casual player.

.303 british straight pull rifle and in game it's a combination of straight pull from Gewehr 95 620 m/s muzzle velocity and a sweet spot from Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mark 3 .303 British Sweet Spot mechanic. Still preferring the Austrian 6.5 mm Gewehr 95 since it's not restricted by a sweet spot mechanic which allows me to kill a player at a range of 221 meters

The sweet spot doesn’t exactly restrict you. It just deals more damage at a certain range. You can still kill people in 2 shots at 200 meters if you want to. The sweet spot doesn’t change performance at long range.

Just treat the sweet spot mechanic as a welcome bonus rather than something you rely on. I always prepare to take two shots to take down a target, unless I manage to range out the shot with the periscope first. Every Scout rifle (save the 1903 Experimental) are 2 shot kills at every range.

Canada wasn't so much a lapdog so much as automatically at war alongside the rest of the British Empire when the British declared war on Germany. We were an independent country in 1867, but there were still a number of treaties and documents that still had to pass to give us full autonomy. By WWII, we were able to declare war independently of Britain, and we chose to do it six days after the British did just to make a bit of a statement that we were our own sovereign nation and not a colony at that point. A fun bit of trivia is that Canada's the only nation that signed the Treaty of Versailles that was a member of the British Empire thanks to a number of outstanding Canadian-led victories and by the war's end we more or less had Canadian divisions lead by Canadian commanders rather than the British officers that were put in command at the beginning of the war. World War One is widely seen as the birthplace for Canadian nationalism and sense of independent identity; up until then, most English-speaking Canadians felt like they were still largely British loyalists and subjects. But to answer your question, it was largely a case of the British wanting to ensure they had enough arms for their own forces and at the outset of the war, there was quite a bit of a perception that Canadians were "colonial farmers" who had no experience or fighting spirit so why bother equipping the canon fodder properly?
