Smoke is still rendered properly because smoke is server based, not client based, so yes, you were killed by aimbotter/wallhacker/ESP user. Not someone using this exploit. Yes, I think a way to adjust this so people can just have funky graphics with no advantage is to make LODs solid instead of disappear. Let's take the field grass on maps like Panzer storm and arras. Instead of making it disappear, the software should make it a solid yellow cuboid that the player can walk through. No advantage, no problem.

Nvidia Inspector is just a program that allows you to more precisely tweak your driver settings, it doesn't run in the background or does anything to the Battlefield V game directly. No, as this guy said it's just the dev's fault. Nvidia inspector is a legal software anyone can use, it's not for cheating or "hacking" games. If you count it as a cheat tool then you could also call people who play at higher resolutions and framerates cheaters.

same principle as Quake greenlight textures. Basically in Quake you could replace textures, turning enemies bright green. It was allowed and turned into a togglable feature for future games. The thing is Quake always was 100% competitive. BF is more like some kind of casual multiplayer experience, so maybe it's different in that regard.

Casual games would be more likely to allow something like texture changes, as there's less at stake. Competitive games there is more at stake, so it is more important for people to be on a level playing field as far as things like graphics go. Not to mention that more competitive games are much more specifically designed with things like visibility in mind, so altering that is essentially undermining the game itself. With Quake I would imagine it is because of what phildev said. It is allowed not to increase visibility, but to increase performance of the game itself. The game being so fast-paced, performance is a huge issue.

this happened for several years, not that interesting on quake though... easy as fuck to check players... other games like Aliens Vs predator 2 had it worse, you could replace the predator cloak efect with a custom, opaque, tecture, and see them kms away... Thats why now on modern shooters cloak effects and certain things at long distances are not rendered at all (the local PC doesnt "render a transparent texture" but instead applies values where a certain amount of dots composing the shape/texture are not rendered, giving a similar effect but removing the texture replacement method, however its not always perfect.

Well, it is obviously a visual advantage. That's why most people who play pubg play on the lowest graphics settings. Having your enemy stick out like a sore thumb is cheating if it is not an in-game option. If it's a feature in the game (like in pubg) then it's still bullshit, but it's fine I guess. Visuals are incredibly important, of course a game is nothing without mechanics and systems but the visuals need to communicate those mechanics as well as for tone and aesthetic. Video Games are an animated medium and I think people need to drop this idea that graphics AREN'T important. Sure, A game doesn't need to look photoreal but it should inform the player and get them in a certain headspace. In a collaborative form of entertainment, every element of your game (Audio, visuals, controls, design etc.) should ALL be of upmost importance.
