As a former US military officer, I've been thinking a lot about how much could do if we decided that climate action fell under "defense" funding. We could turn our biggest waste of public money into a massive climate defense fund. Seems like a more practical use of our resources to me.

Absolutely, with military budget and initiative we could have this solved by 2050. Instead we'll kick the can down the road until we are all at war over the millions of climate refugees crossing boarders 😞

From what I've read the Pentagon does consider climate change a defense issue. However, their focus is on dealing with threats caused by countries and societies turning to conflict due to climate change, not the technical issue of the change itself. The problem for the Pentagon is they can't stop global human society from changing the environment, and keep global human societies from attacking US interests due to climate pressures at the same time. They get paid to protect US interests not the planet interests. If you could get the entire global population to agree to focus solely on climate change mitigation, then everyone's military funds could be diverted to climate change. Otherwise, you are asking for unilateral disarmament during a period of guaranteed heightened conflict. No country will do that until they have no choice.

Dear Adam, thank you for these wise and prudent words, at a time when rushing to a wrong form of solidarity, justifying civilian casualties and downplaying the suffering of others seems to become the norm. If the huge sums of money that are invested in the military were used to fight poverty, for equal opportunities, for education, for infrastructure and education, terrorism would quickly die out. Western nations in particular, which always present themselves as progressive and morally superior, should finally start investing in the right things for the sake of their credibility and the safety of our planet: Peace, justice, life prospects for all, the environment and the climate.

this is a really important point - the region is incredibly vulnerable to climate change - scarce fresh water resources, low altitude, as just two examples. conflict (violent or indirectly over resources) only exacerbates these issues. "we need a plan, not a war" is a wonderful way of putting it, and sums up a lot of my thoughts these days...

Your intelligence, coupled with your empathy, make for a very unbiased and focused presentation of fact. Thank you for your contribution to messaging our need to fight for the rights of the biosphere. Yes, sadly it seems conflict is the “go to solution” that human kind assigns to any situation, but with enough people just saying no, things could be different. Our environment is ruled by a small group of corporations, with boards of directors making decisions to benefit the investors. Similar to how wars are governed.

@Anuchan

That's assuming that wars are fought on a benefit loss basis. But most countries aren't concerned with the cost. The Gaza attack, as well as the Israeli retaliation, weren't about receiving benefits. They are about trying to terrorize your opponent into surrendering. The Russian attacks in the Ukraine are the same. The cost to Russia far exceeds the benefit for the tiny sliver of land they will most likely end up with. The cost to the environment is even more of a waste. When the inevitable mass extinction comes, the Kissingers who started the wars will stay behind their protective walls while the rest of us will starve to death with the rest of the animals.

I've been deeply concerned by how antisemitism has been conflated with criticism of Israel's actions here, to the point where jewish groups have been attacked and silenced for "antisemitism", and venues have had their funding cut for hosting events (e.g. Oyoun hosting an event from Jüdische Stimme here in Berlin). and this thinking is also being used to further exclude and harass muslim and arab Germans (or residents of Germany). so, yeah, I'm not thrilled...

Go you Adam. I see war as nothing but an indication of how immature we are as a species. When / if war does end for humanity, that would be a sign of evolving to a more mature stated. My thesis analyzed at religion that does teach that with enough truly feminine values were including in decision making, wars would end. Again, thanks for that final input.

I live in Northern Indiana and remember when I was a kid having snow in October, now we are lucky to have winter with any snow at all. Global warming is happening so much faster than ANYONE wants to admit. For anyone today that has young kids consider them the last generation survive on the planet. We have 50 years max but realistically its going to be more like 25 because in about 10 years time the amount of warming will have gotten so bad that runaway effect will have increased so much that about 10 or 15 years after that the earth WILL have become unlivable to the point that unless you are living underground you would not be able to survive. With everything that is going on in the world today and the fact that WW3 seems to be right around the corner and climate change has been pretty much put on the back burner, I have come to the sobering reality that this particular planet and its species just wasn't meant to make it.

I think that for too long the warmongers have diverted money and energy from the more important ideas such as unity and commonality. We are all the same and our diverse heritage can also be a bond. Thanks for the video. While new things came to me through you here, the very notion that wars and military contribute quite a noticeable percentage of GHG emissions could not be such a surprise (at least not for me). Just imagine Ukraine today, the worries of being overrun any time now or months ago. At that time anyone just gives up on anything else but survival, anything but defensibility … in the most effective way possible (in absolute sense, not in relative sense). Anyone preparing to survive any type of conflict and any war is under the same pressure -> that makes the military machinery and preparations to be less mindful of GHG compared to any other technology.

The problem of climate change and also the problem of war is not technological but sociological. Yes, wars make the climate situation worse--that much is obvious. What seems to have been missed is that climate change or its cause, ecological overshoot, make war more likely. The current conflicts are not just random events no matter how stupid any such conflict is. They erupted now because climate change and its symptoms put pressure on societies that eventually erupt into intensified conflict. Sure, humanity could wave its hands in the air and declare an end to war, but that is not sociologically or behaviorally likely. These conflicts are symptoms, and they are more likely to multiply due to worsening climate than to stop so we can focus on climate change in isolation. Climate change is not an intellectual puzzle; it is a species survival test.

You're a good person Adam. I find war horrifying but I fear to say utterly fascinating as sickening. I find my favourite Therapist Doctor Gabor Mate illuminating on this subject. See his piece on Israel & Palestine with his discussion with Piers on the same. To look for light in the pitch black places war has often changed the direction of humanity & brought answers to problems. Though it appears as a endless ridiculous series of horrors sickening to the soul. Robert Graves once said to me in 67 'All the problems of man come from his overturning the Godesses for Gods & disrepecting the wisdom of women.' Great guy. Was writing about this kind of thing back in the 20's. Try his essays on these subjects. Robert suffered 20 years of walking nightmares after the First World War. See 'Goodbye to All That.'

The current aggression of Venezuela against Guyana may be a better example than the iraq war. We don't have to look back decades when we can find good examples of land grabs for oil happening literally this week. Edit: The US military budget is really only the largest in the world when you don't adjust for purchasing power. In terms of raw ressource consumption (which is a lot more relevant for climate impact than dollar figures) China is at least equal.

"Decarbonization would still cost an estimated $4.5 trillion. And I think it's a pretty open question which use of the money better protects the lives and well-being of Americans." ... as an economist, I'd throw another open question into the mix: the risk generated by the idealistic ones that fall off some left bias universities and subsequently shape policy. Yes - if everyone decided to live in peace, surely that would be a great idea. Otherwise, US demilitarization would mean geopolitical destabilization leading to the genocide of Ukraine, the wiping of Thaiwan off the face of the earth, and the annexation of Eastern Europe back into the Russian sphere of influence. It can be argued that the well-meaning advice of environmental or climate activists caused the war in Ukraine - Germany aggressively pushed for completely absurd decarbonisation, shut down nuclear power plants, and systematically cut back on its military. The result? Astronomical energy prices, socio-economic instability, the rise of right-wing radicalism, the disintegration of European industry, unemployment, and prospectively (+/- 10 to 20 years) the break-up of the EU is in play. And all of this is completely unnecessary, because in an attempt to avert grid collapse, Germany had to activate coal-fired power plants. The army is not there to save the climate - the army is there to be as effective as possible, and any adversary would rather change his mind about war at the sight of it. I wonder if anyone has looked into non-classical economics - there is a whole subfield of environmental economics that elaborates on the concept of sustainable economics. No experiments needed, no crazy stuff like eco friendly missiles. Just make parametric changes in the regulation of the market economy. Paradoxically, this would not be "regulation" that would harm the economy. On the contrary, it would remove market failures and thus allow the market to achieve higher overall shyness.

It is no surprise, if you check what type of arsenal ie. USA has been building and running. This estimate could be even lower than it actually is, just because every ammunition that we use contains ghg's and is destroying plants that are carbon sinks. For buying more military equipments today, we ensure high emissions for decades to come. We will be using todays weapons in far future. Ie. Russia has dug up 1950's tanks... And in war situation we are destroying everything. And that means we will be building those things up after the combat. Building entire cities will make huge emissions.

Great that you Adam did not stop at calling for a cease fire and protection of all civilain lives in Gaza. You went on to call for the ability of all people in Palestine (that includes the State of Israel) be able to live dignified lives in a well structured lasting peace. So many forget (many deliberately) the context of 75 Years of brutal repression, genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity perpretated by Israel on a bascially defencless Palestinian population and that the conditions for this must cease. I for one can not wait to see Israeli ofccials be brough before the International Court Of Justice, Charged, tried and convicted and punished for these despicable acts over the past 75 years and espcially now. This is not anitsemitism, it just rooted in common human decency, the sort of decency that did this to thge german Nazis that eg perpetrated the extermination of the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, just is Israel is attempting to do to Palestinaians in the almost exact parrallel of Gaza. Im in Sydney Australia, not in my name, either.

You are entitled to your opinions on the Middle East, but any of the world's countries after an attack like the Hamas attacks would have done the same thing Israel did. They would declare war.
