That's not a cat in the box. It's actually Gizmo from the movie "Gremlins." The hidden shop you find that box in is a whole reference to the Gremlings movie where the dad buys Gizmo from the Chinese shop owner. That shop is also where you can find and unlock the Mammoth gun in the display case by finding small and hidden golden mammoth skulls hidden around the map.
