To be out numbered 20 to 1 and they still flew. They suited up, climbing into the cockpit, closed the canopy, buckled up, started the engine, and took off to a fate they knew was eventual death... the only thing making them do so was to buy another day, another day for the loved one in that little black and white photo. Hoping that last bomber, that last kill to add to 50 others would be the one to save them.

What I love about BFV is that it humanized everyone. I’ll be the first to argue that Nazis were and are evil, awful people. Something I wrote for my degree went in depth into the myth of the clean Wehrmacht and the terror actions undertaken by every brand of the German military and government. But within the war crimes, acts of aggression, false flag attacks, genocide; there were also normal people like you and me who should be understood.

Oh man, i play war thunder with this on a playlist and i was in a mass dogfight, five or six planes dancing around trying to get a shot on someone, and i was killing it. Anyway i'm on the tail of this biplane when i start taking fire (then this part begins). I quickly dispatch the biplane and take evasive action against the enemy, and i guess a few of our planes got destroyed because now i had like 2 or 3 planes trying to shoot me down, as i dance around attempting to destroy them one by one, a few rounds hit my engine and i begin to lose energy. At this point i have about 4 planes on me and i'm just desperately swerving, to no avail as the sheer amount of gunfire ends up peppering my plane. My last ditch effort comes with a loss of speed due to my engine damage, i sluggishly dip left and right to buy time for my team as i am distracting 4 or 5 enemies at this point, but the damage is severe and my plane continues to soak up more and more damage. Black smoke is streaming out from my plane and i am hit with bullet after bullet until, at the moment you are scripted to get shot down in BF5, i sustain critical damage and spiral into the ground below, and it was one of the best gaming experiences i've ever had.

The thing is with this mission, that I dont think everyone realised, this was 1943. It was a mostly defensive war for Germany by this point. they weren't going out on a sortie to conquer some far away land, or destroy their enemies. They flew to protect their people below. Kinda shows that war, no matter what side you're on, is hell for everybody at some point.

While it is fine to honor those who served honorably, never forget that every single arm of the Nazis was responsible. The SS for sure, but just as well for the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, etcetera. It was the Luftwaffe responsible for gunning down civilian foot convoys in Poland.

The Wehrmacht (not just the SS as some might tell you) had far higher warcrime rates than any other force in the war, even the Red Army. Sure, there were a few innocent individuals, but saying there was no bad side is just wrong. Fighting for your country isn't heroic if that country is a terrible regime commiting crimes against humanity nonstop.

This is just wrong. Denying the holocaust and glorifying the nazis might get you are fine and possibly even prison, but certainly not just being nationalistic. I am German and I can tell you Germans absolutely do not hate their country. We are very proud of what we have become after the war. We are proud of the reunification, we are proud of being Europes leading economic super power even after all the bad stuff that happened to this country. We are proud of being one of the most progressive countries even after the horror of the nazi regime. What do Americans even know about Germany apart from Prussia and the nazis? The majority of Germany had very different tradtions than Prussia and they are still very much actively praticed. Even Prussian tradtions like the military marches are still held, despite most of old Prussian territory not even being German anymore.

thats because back then, the nazis primarily focused on rebuilding all aspects of the army and introduced conscription, but it’s not that serious in germany nowadays
