What’s happening in this Battleship movie clip?
The third ship proves too elusive for the ship’s missiles to hit, so they lure it into a position in which it is in view of the John Paul Jones and facing east, just as the sun rises. This allows Alex and Nagata (Tadanobu Asano from Bright Future and 47 Ronin) to shoot out its bridge windows with sniper rifles, blinding its crew with sunlight so John Paul Jones can destroy it. As the sun rises, the destroyer attempts to target the communications array, but a pair of alien drones sink the John Paul Jones.

What’s the movie Battleship about?
Pacific Ocean... Off the coast of Hawaii, the US Navy is deploying all its power. The young and impulsive Lieutenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights) is close to resigning from the US Navy. His brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgård from Melancholia and Generation Kill), who is a higher ranking officer than he is, laments his many antics. As a large part of the fleet, mobilized for a full-scale exercise with ships from different countries, leaves Pearl Harbor, a strange and threatening shape emerges on the surface of the waters, followed by dozens of others with an unimaginable power of destruction. Who are they? What were they doing, hidden for so long at the bottom of the ocean? The stunned soldiers soon realize that the mysterious visitors, who have come to plunder the Earth's resources, are also motivated by hostile intentions. Yep. I had a chance to visit DDG-108, USS Wayne Meyer last year. Not a lot of people realize that those "Destroyers" are 4X as big as a WWII Destroyer. (10,000 tons vs 2,500 tons)

I really enjoyed this movie and enjoy seeing these clips from time to time. The casting was great especially the contributions of the Japanese Captain. Getting those WWII vets involved was priceless. Then the ending of getting a WWII battleship operational is a boy's dream to me.

It's not likely that WWII vets were involved: 'Nam vets are more likely. IF I remember correctly, the USS New Jersey was reCommissioned and engaged in shore bombardment missions off North Viet Nam for a while. This would make for a good-sized core of vets to be volunteers on the Missouri, and then Crew.

I think the best thing about this movie is just how cheesy it is. It knows it is, it leans into the cheese. It makes the cheese fun. Who cares... it's a freaking destroyer chasing alien ships and everything is blowing up. It's just cool. And the Missouri kicks ass.

Those microspaceship is not design for space travel, they are just scout planes for aliens. The mother ship is the one that travels and hits meteorites along the way. So this microspaceship are weaker and could be penetrated with 50 cal

In real life those 50 cal bullets would not put a dent on alien high tech super glass because that glass is designed to take the impact of micro meteorites traveling in space at thousands of miles faster than any bullet. So the shell of the alien spacecraft and its windows would have to be made of super tough materials to withstand just about anything

Torpedoes are not impact fused anymore. They are designed to detonate under the keel of enemy vessels instead of directly in the side of the enemy vessels (much more effective) Torpedoes also carry a shit load of explosives, so if they bump the torpedo to the surface and detonate them, that’s still one hell of a explosion directly under the belly of the enemy ship

I see that a lot of the hate this movie gets is from people that have knowledge of the NAVY and equipment used. Please, we get it, you know more than me and others, doesn't mean it is a bad movie for everyone. The casting was great, the character development was refreshing, the sound design was spectacular, the variety of characters and their roles we're played wonderfully, the storyline overall did the job, and it's about the NAVY taking on Aliens. This is just another take on Alien warfare with the NAVY, who cares if it's based off a kids game, it's a great movie.

IIRC at this point in the film the aliens were jamming radar so hard it basically just didn't work and the humans' plan called for stealth. Why shine an incredibly powerful air search radar at the aliens when it won't help you find them and guarantees that they'll find you? A lot of people don't understand that in modern naval warfare using a search radar is pretty much equivalent to constantly shouting your position over the radio without encryption and on a frequency which every warship monitors.

The Burkes are equipped with the Aegis System, so even if they WERE getting Jammed, they still had the Aegis formation for AA, something they incorporate in the case of jamming. That's something shared between the Burkes. Not to mention the lack of use of Tomahawks and Harpoons in the beginning which can be guided in by laser. Sonar would also still work and they could've taken out the mothership with sonar guided torpedoes.

@@kerblingtime I have no idea what you mean by an "isolated" radar or how that could avoid the weaknesses of a "non-isolated" radar, whatever that is. Aegis requires radar for air defense, either from own ship or from another friendly ship (and all of the nearby ones got blown up at the beginning of the movie). The system generally is said to be quite resistant to jamming, but that far from guarantees it could resist jammers made by an interstellar civilization. Harpoons can't be guided by laser; they're purely radar-guided weapons. I've never heard of a laser-guided tomahawk, but it has so many features and variants I can't keep them straight. Assuming the laser tomahawk is real, why would there even be a designator for it onboard? Tomahawks are most definitely not intended to be used within visual range. It would be weird but possible for there to be a designator intended for infantry use onboard, but it would take time for someone to go and get it. Yes, acoustically-guided torpedoes would totally work. However, torpedoes on modern surface ships are intended for anti-submarine use, so a crew in their first battle with ships exploding nearby and FREAKIN' ALIENS could be forgiven for not thinking to try them against a surface target.
