My dad was in the Army in Vietnam. He told me a story about being on some hill in Vietnam and hearing a tremendous sound that passed directly overhead. Come to find out it was the New Jersey out in the gulf firing 16-inch shells that were passing about 50 feet over the top of the hill my father and his squad were on. He said they called in and reported the sound and were latter told it was the New Jersey. He said he would never forget that sound.

I believe the USS New Jersey was the second model kit I ever put together after the USS Arizona. I don't remember the kit having a bulbous bow like in this video. But I did take a little more care in painting and detailing the New Jersey. It became my favorite battle ship model that I kept the longest. I was a kid in the 70's in Southwest Philadelphia. From my house at 63rd and Dicks Ave, I could see the tops of masts from the ships stationed at the Naval Base where my dad worked. He took my brother and I to go aboard the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier/museum when she was there. I miss those rare days when dad could bring us 'on base.'

They're fantastic as museum ships, but to keep them steaming just for looks? Won't happen. In the 80's they were still pretty close to what the Navy knew how to do well. M-type boilers instead of D-type - sure, but they could still find lots of former Navy guys to remind them how to run an M-type boiler. Now the only steam-powered vessels left in the inventory (if my understanding is correct) are the nukes. I don't even know if the Navy still has BT's (Boiler Techs). And they're crazy-assed expensive to operate, have huge manning requirements, and the one mission they're best suited for (shore bombardment) is not something that the Navy needs to do much. AND they're 40 years older than the last time they were recommissioned. Time is not a friend to vessels that sit with their hulls in salt water. No, we have seen the last of them, I fear. Beautiful ships, but as with many an aging beauty time has passed them by.

The New Jersey was built when cars, planes and other modes of transportation were in their adolecence, yet she was as fast on the day of her last full power run as she was on the day of her first. Her speed then would rival the officially released speeds of today's carriers and most other ships. Even today, there are few ships faster than this behemoth. The only reason they became obsolete was because of the advances other weapons delivery systems, aircraft and carriers because when it came down to it, that was her primary job, stand off and bomb the shit out of targets she couldn't even see.

The USS New Jersey is one grand old girl. As are all the Iowas. Perhaps her time has passed, I think that idea is debatable myself, but there is little else on Earth as staggering as watching those 16”/50 guns deal hate upon their targets. I surely wish we could keep at least one Iowa Class Strike Group underway off each coast. The projection of power is a very American policy. The CVNs are certainly powerful, but while being a different sort of power, the Iowas are no less so & in many roles they are every bit as intimidating to our enemies.
@vanta_8lack5912 жыл бұрын
They could make a bbg 65 so that she could be in frontline service. Build her according to standard dreadnought with loads of armor and she will be able to take a beating. She could be posted at the the entrance of the black sea to deter ships from going through while not engaging in combat. The guns might be obsolete but they could use them with a cwis or the new equivalent while keeping secondary guns rapid loading. They could add vtol missiles in the stern while putting in a nuclear reactor.(they are small. What makes them big is the armor that surrounds it. On a BB that wouldn't be much of a difference.) Then they have a ship that missiles will struggle to sink. Most vital info would be in the citadel too.

Wouldn't she, tho!

Chinese (or Russian) anti ship missiles would reach her several hours before her guns could theoretically reach them. Forget it. It's the same way for the B-52 bomber, which modern Russian anti-air missiles have relegated to cruise missile dispensers that loiter at standoff distance.

That can be said for any ship. But not every ship is built fuckin Iowa class.

If you now want to talk about how cool she is, all would agree with you. But sending her to fight China would be like sending the greatest medieval knight to fight modern snipers.

The greatest medieval Knight's knew how to forge steel. So I kinda doubt that.

Very Cool footage of the belly of a WWII Battleship. The camera guy started getting me motion sickness. He was quickly zooming in, zooming out looking up and looking down and moving left and moving right all at the same time.

Do you want a battleship with your sacrificial zinc blocks. They certainly don't want her rusting.

Young people don’t give a shit about some rusty old ship, I would have it in my back yard and would visit it all the time.

The drydock and shipyard no longer exist. Now that the navy needs more shipyard capabilities.

If the battleships are decommissioned, then why are the propellers still attached? I saw the Missouri in dry dock still with propellers.

I took my daughter to visit the USS Massachusetts in Fall River Massachusetts. These battle ships are incredible. Gives you pride in the US.

Want to see a modern anti ship missile hit the thickness and armor grade of this ship. The metal making ability, skill and manufacturing is gone but could be reproduced if needed. Anything can be achieved through determination

My grandfather served on her in WWII, he unfortunately passed away before I got to meet him. It was surreal getting to tour her in Camden NJ a couple years ago after we donated his uniform. Felt a deep family connection thats hard to explain.
