I've been enjoying the stories of the battles that ships, tanks, and soldiers went through since I was a kid in the 80s. My Grandpa was a WW2 NAVY vet that got me hooked on documentaries, although he didn't seem to have any exciting personal stories to share. I also enjoy learning about what it takes to use and maintain that equipment, so even videos devoted solely to paint challenges are great.

Just been using up some paint to save keeping it over the winter - Hate it when you open a can and there isn't enough to be useful , so the subject is an appropriate coincidence . With the conditions ships encounter in a blue water Navy it's a job that has to be done well with the right coating and pretty regularly so whilst she won't be going anywhere it's good to see New Jersey will look her best for the big occasion .

Love your channel Ryan, great videos. Since you mentioned the anniversary of the US Navy, wanted to recommend to anyone interested in the history of the Navy a book I recently began reading...."Six Frigates" by Ian W. Toll. A fascinating, detailed and excellently written account of the very early years of our Navy. The very descriptive accounts of events, most notably the "Quasi-war" with France and the "Battle of Tripoli" (I'm only half way through the book) are outstanding reads. The author also includes a lot of material about the role the country's founding fathers played in getting the Navy "off the ground". I also read his trilogy of the Navy in the battle for the Pacific in WW2 and also highly recommend these three books.

(Video idea) How do you keep such a massive ship from banging the pier it's moored at? I have a small sailing vessel and we use fenders or buoys as we call them here. Sometimes we also tie onto wooden poles in the water to pull it out about a foot... Do such things translate to a big ship? Would fenders just pop or can/are they used in this case?

Why is the ship hull dented ?
@F-ManКүн бұрын
She’s over 80 years old, she’s done millions of miles in all kinds of sea states, she’s been subjected to 80 years of humidity and temperature changes, she’s been fired on, bumped piers, bumped by smaller vessels, and flexed and hogged in the waves. What you’re seeing is called “oil canning,” for the most part - the shell plating expands and contracts over the structural frames underneath over time, leaving that undulating surface.
@kennethloki7011Күн бұрын
Even brand new ships look dented. Large pieces of steel + distance between any support and it caves in a little. If you see a concave area on a section where the steel has more form/shape to it, then that is from contact. Shaped steel resists forming ripples/waves/ or other oddities better.

It's a shame that you guys don't have enough room to accommodate SS United States, until the conservancy gets its act together to at least get her painted....it would be pretty cool to have two legends docked side-by-side, especially for the 250th anniversary, but she's probably going to end up a reef, unless a miracle occurs.

SS United States conservancy has had how long to get its act together? How could things possibly change now?
@American_Jeeper10 сағат бұрын
@@cjc_0167 I completely agree with you, it was just a pipe dream thought I put to words. I could play the shoulda woulda coulda game all day long, but at the end of the day her demise was sealed, when her interior appointments and machinery were removed and sold. Added to that, previous managers of the vessel were neglectful in their duties as her caretakers. Too little, too late, she's going to either be a reef, or the scumbags who own the pier where she's at will take control of her legally and scrap her. Either way, it's a shit ending for an historically invaluable ship.

Outstanding job Ryan Battleship New Jersey remains and carefully articulated hands I would however specify I think it was a mistake not to repaint the ship as she appeared during her World War II career none of the Iowa's resemble their second World War era appearance and while you could never fully restore the anti-aircraft battery and other elements lost over the years. USS New Jersey's nickname the black dragon could have been facilitated by simply repainting the hall in this rare opportunity to bolster her Museum attendance of the four Iowa's whichever one does it first is going to get the most visitation and Ryan I think it was a lost opportunity while certainly for preservation sake you want to keep the ship as she appeared in 1990 1991 but the whole needed to be repainted anyway and I see it as a lost opportunity to Edge the ships Aesthetics to bolster Museum attendance.

They go all out cutting away through hull blanks and and unbolting/reattaching all pipes and cables. Worst, "We don't have time" emergency spin up..... How fast could we make steam and head out to fight?.... (Barring free states, Like Texas, Montana, Arizona and the like, making ammo and over nighting it Amazon style....ignore that for the question)
