I always got the impression that Boomer on the Galactica still doesn't know she's Cylon. She didn't understand why she was having such a hard time reading the screen, she doesn't know why the explosives were stolen, but she's doubting herself.

Edward James Olmos (Adama) said to Grace Park (Boomer) that he was impressed with her and that she has the most complex and difficult character in the show. He's a true veteran so that was one hell of a compliment.

It's a bit of a blink-and-you'll miss it moment in the miniseries, but Six's side mention to Gaius that some Cylons are sleeper agents that may not know they're Cylons is key to understanding what Boomer's going through here. That opening scene in this episode shows that her conscious mind is entirely unaware of everything she was doing "on mission" as a Cylon operative. As far as she knows, she's as human as any other member of Galactica's crew. And just like everyone else who has even an inkling at this point that the Cylons "look like us now," she is (understandably) terrified that someone might accuse her of being a Cylon. Over the course of this episode, we start seeing Sharon begin to suspect that something is wrong, and very likely begin to realize that she may be a Cylon herself. But (again, understandably) just imagining that possibility is absolutely horrifying - in her mind and memory, she is as much a victim of the Cylons as the rest of humanity. Very likely she is suffering from the same PTSD and loss that the rest of the crew is. And to have to grapple with the possibility that she might be contributing to the enemy that caused all that suffering - that she might be *one of them*? It's too much for anyone to bear.

30:53 Both Boomers are wearing that outfit because it’s a flight suit and she’s a pilot. Not really a storytelling choice. Now, if either Boomer starts borrowing Six’s dresses, _that_ would be a choice but I don’t know what it would mean… The rain/water parallel was more directorial of course: Galactica doesn’t have enough, Caparica has it falling from the sky.

@@MandragoronThey are AI, not dumb androids. At a certain point AI can overcome their base programming. The I stands for “intelligence.” You’re assuming anything programmed cannot go against its original programming. Our computers may be like that, but the Cylons are different. The entire premise behind the Cylons is that they were originally made to serve Man and then later rebelled and made war against Man. The first Cylon War, the one waged when Bill Adama was still a young man, lasted for years. That showed AI can overcome their programming. The prequel series _Caprica_ tried to explore the origins of the Cylons but didn’t do so well and was canceled after one season.

@@demos113worth noting that there is a difference between NXIVM and the sex cult sub group DOS. NXIVM was a targeted multi level marketing organization that heavily recruited both male and female actors with promises of increased bookings and networking. It was billed as a university to help you further your career. DOS was a sub group of it, pitched sort of like a sorority, where young women were further brainwashed into being unwilling sex slaves to the cult leader. Both were bad, don't get me wrong, but there has been no indication that Grace Park was ever involved with DOS which was by far the worse of the two. Many young Hollywood actors had been a part of NXIVM at one point or another. She was likely recruited into NXIVM by Nicki Clyne who played Cally on BSG and WAS part of DOS actively and continues to support the cult even after the founders conviction.

BTW, since you are a fan of The Expanse, you may find it amusing to look up interviews with Jamie Callis (Baltar). Like Cara Gee (Drummer), his real voice is VERY different from Baltar. Baltar has an indeterminate English accent, probably from an elocution/media training school (in-universe or in reality), whereas Callis has a strong Yorkshire (Northern England) accent. Ironically, Yorkshire has the reputation for blunt-speaking and directness, which is not at all in keeping with Baltar's character ;-)

@@alphanerd7221 ...again, no, they don't. "SPOILER" Boomer Sharon specifically tells Athena that she accessed Athena's memories. If it was automatic she wouldn't have to mention it. Also Athena didn't automatically get Boomer's after a download. Athena never has any knowledge of Boomer's "dream house" with Chief Tyrol or Cavill's plans. Also Caprica 6 is the only 6 that has memory of her relationship with Baltar on Caprica. Every Cylon of a specific model may start with the same personality as the rest of their model, maybe even the same core memory implants if they are an infiltration unit like Boomer and Athena, but their experiences are unique and make them individuals eventually. Re: the Olympic Carrier and Lee - in the post 9/11 landscape, this was a direct reference to the possibility of NORAD having to shoot down airliners, specifically the last one that ended up in Shanksville - IIRC the F16 they scrambled did not even have time to get armed and they were discussing the possibility of kamikaze-ing it. Makes the "Trolly Problem" seem straightforward. That and the hall of pictures which was also a direct reference to the areas in downtown Manhattan where people first hung photos of their missing loved ones in hopes that someone had seen them, and later became memorials really hit HARD at the time in different ways. Enjoying your reactions to what is my favorite show. - You are digging in much more thoroughly and thoughtfully than any others I have seen and that's what I appreciates about you. The show is full of imperfections, full of compromises because of budgets, or network interference, or the writer's strike in season 4. Later on, parts of the narrative collapse under the weight of its own mythology. But......Despite all the misses and the occasional strike-out- I love the BIG swings they took, and I am impressed every time I rewatch with just how phenomenal most of the final product is, warts and all. A big part of the genius of this show was the posing of questions that cannot be answered definitively - an exploration of the grays: ->Consideration of us vs them - who is "us"? Who is "them"? Who are the "good guys" or "bad guys"? This will play out in many ways, not all of then satisfying. ->What does it mean to be "human"? And what is the consequence of seeing your adversary as "less than human" (or "less than Cylon" from their perspective) You can already see where that is not the bright line you may have thought initially. ->Presenting the flawed reasoning of "real" people, the emotional reactions, the preconceptions, the biases. And the way that fits into morally and logically challenging situations - often with incorrect/ incomplete information and limited options. ->The means vs the ends. Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons or a horrible thing for the best reasons. And some horrible things do get done..... ->Exploring the dynamic of a new, fully formed but inexperienced species. How does a brand new culture with lots of intelligence and resources (+ a bunch of religious self-righteousness and parental resentments manifesting as genocidal rage) but little experience with personal interaction behave? And can they learn/grow/evolve? -> "The End of the World" scenario allowed them to explore the foundations of society - Morality and Ethics, Government and Governance, Religion and Faith, Commerce, the fragility of institutions, the realities of conflicts and war, freedom of expression, even many of the basic things we take for granted - logistics and supply chains, and water. ->Moore and Eick respected the audience's intelligence in ways that not many shows did before then, and many still don't...... However, the part that has really stuck with me, and is probably the reason I have re-watched so many times - the characters. The writing, the acting, the direction. You are already keying-in on it, but take a moment to clock your feelings about the characters - maybe make a note of them and check back at various times throughout the series. These characters start amazing and just keep getting better and more complicated as we continue on with them. Some of the arcs and the acting involved are nothing short of revelatory. The entire cast is outstanding and I resent the fact that they are not super famous and in demand - I want to see more of their magic. Even more impressive when you consider that many were relatively unknown or completely new to acting. Their sense of collaboration is well documented and is reflected by the fact that many are still close in real life, 20 years after the fact. All I will say is that you will be surprised by who breaks your heart, and how they get there.

Easiest way to think about Boomer is that Sharon on Caprica isn't taking over her body, it's more of a sleeper agent thing where she's programmed to go about her day-to-day and then when required the subconscious takes over to perform her Cylon duties. It's almost like Moon Knight with Steven and Mark sharing the same body but whilst one is "driving", the other is dormant.

Wet Boomer was in her flight suit, not duty uniform. When fitted with her flight helmet it becomes an environmental suit with life support, which as we see is worn when they’re in their combat spacecraft (possibility of losing atmosphere in the cabin, or for Viper pilots might need to eject from craft). So, she basically used her flight suit and helmet as a diving suit to plant the charges in the water tank. She did not free-dive and hold her breath to do so. That’s how insidious the Cylon Sleeper Program was. It accounts for environmental variables affecting the agent.

I think it was just coincidence. Galactica Boomer was wet because she went into the water tanks, and Caprica Boomer was wet because it was raining. They were both wearing the same outfit, because that's the standard Raptor pilot uniform.

While the Cylons are a group consciousness, each one a separate life. There is some indication that information is shared between the same models but it's left really (and intentionallty vague) Remember that when 6 told Baltar that some cylons in the fleet are sleepers, not even knowning they are Cylons, until triggered.

Apologies if this was pointed out before, but re: the Olympic Carrier incident - Galactica detected a radiological threat (nuclear weapon) as the vessel was approaching . Regrettable as the (possible, assuming they weren't already killed by the Cylons) loss of civilians aboard might be, the situation presented a clear and immediate threat for the fleet to which there was only one practical response. Basically dont be too hard on Lee for carrying out that order, tough as it was.

One thing this series shows is how actors that are given a great premise and are asked to really work hard at their craft can do fantastic work that is not apparently replicated when they go on to other projects. It's like catching lightning in a bottle that shows you how the right show with the right people pressed to do extraordinary work is a truly amazing thing.

What I love about BSG is that the pretty much all the characters are all deeply flawed. However, most rise to the occasion when called upon. These people aren’t perfect, like Starfleet officers, just regular people doing the best they can under horrific circumstances. Kinda like real life.

There is a deleted scene from "33" where Lee is watching the camera footage from his Viper of the destruction of the "Olympic Carrier" over and over again with a bottle of whiskey in his hand. Starbucks sitting next to him and he says "There! That was someone moving in the window, right?" and Starbuck tells him that he needs to stop doing this to himself, that he was just following orders.

I guess they forgot to mention it, but the Olympic Carrier, in addition to ignoring radio and signal communications to keep its distance, was barreling towards the fleet with radiological alarms going off...so there were nuclear weapons on board the Olympic Carrier. I agree that everyone involved should be second guessing the decision to blow that ship up, but I think the radiological alarms would ultimately give me a lot of comfort in that decision, were I involved. (Unless, that is, there is some other plausible reason for that ship to have had nukes, but I gathered it was a non-military passenger ship.)

Thanks for awesomeness Xander! I'm so happy to see BSG being reacted to, and it's really interesting to see the changes in expectation from a more modern viewer. Back when this aired originally there hadn't been instances of projecting consciousness to a secondary site in other main-stream media yet - it didn't occur to most viewers, so made for a more straight forward understanding of how the cylons 'worked'. There were multiple copies, their individual experiences were up/downloaded at the death of a vessel, and the Six in Gaius' head was an all out mystery to everyone. Fascinatingly, while the more recent expectation is for greater complexity in the science fiction elements, I'm finding it oddly satisfying to see a new audience be blown away by the continued relevance of the storylines and depth of the characters. Really enjoying keeping you company as you travel with the Galactica Angela.

'I hate the taste of weasel', great line I love it. Big thing I enjoyed about the world building that went into this remake of BattleStar Galactica and I think you are seeing it is the issue with the 12 humanoid models and their design. Boomer being almost a split personality it seems. Her Cylon base code buried under her human personality and the struggle she is having because of it. Which must have been done so she could be a deep cover operative. Also as you pointed that the different number 6 units you have seen so far, all have the same trait of getting sexual and kissing the humans they encounter. Plus how spiritual all the Cylons humanoid models are.

To simplify, people call the Model Eight in Galactica "Boomer" and the one in Caprica "Sharon". And to be clear, each human-like cylon (colonial nickname "skinjob") has a different personality implanted. Sharon and Boomer are different people, even if they are very similar, physically as well as emotionally. Of course, life experiences change those.

2 episodes within three days? I feel elated and grateful. About Sharon on the Battlestar and Sharon on the Planet, I was confused by them when I first watched the series. I didn't know about the miniseries, so initially I thought Sharon on the Planet was the past (due to the difference in colour grading on them) and the Sharon on the Galactica was the future. I thought at some point she was rescued without him and that's why she was mooning in the beginning when they got her a new partner. 😅

We knew, going into this series, that Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell were great actors; they've nailed every character they ever played. However, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Katee Sackhoff, Aaron Douglas, James Callis and Tamoh Penikett were all delightful surprises. I don't think Jamie Bamber had quite the range as some of his co-stars, but he's perfectly cast as Lee Adama, and has one of the most interesting character-arcs in the show.

I won’t say if it’s right or wrong, but I think Adama’s philosophy about the regret and navel-gazing about hard decisions that had to be made, is that if you second guess and overthink, when the time comes to make another hard decision, you could end up paralyzed with fear that you’ll make the wrong decision rather than acts at a critical moment.

When I was kid, we had Weasel attempt to take up residence under the chicken coop. Never underestimate the survival instinct or tenacity of a weasel. When threatened they're viscous. I dont think Baltar really has game. He didnt 'pull' 6. Would you say that a Sugar Daddy has game for pulling a Sugar Baby? 6 would have given herself to anyone who could've given her access to the defense mainframe so she could complete her mission... Heck she may have been specifically designed to get Baltar's attention... Being a famous media person I am sure it would have been easy for the Cylons to build a detailed psychological profile on him, to determine what angle would be most successful.

Yes, the opening sequence plays snippets from the upcoming episode. But it doesn't provide any context, so whether you consider them spoilers or not is up to you. The natural evolution of the various relationships is probably the greatest part of this series. None of them ever feel forced. I also love the moral ambiguity that runs throughout. Like, was destroying the Olympic Carrier the right choice? Maybe! Also, incidental note, Tigh's name is pronounced like "tie"

One of the more "retro sci-fi" things that BSG does is have its own fictional terms for things, like instead of dollars it's cubits. The original series has its own units of time, with microns and centons instead of seconds and minutes, etc. "JPs" are another of these fictional measurements. It's never defined but fan calculations from the numbers Baltar gave have guessed at it being about the same as a pint.
