What an episode! So glad we got to focus on Gauis and even though it didn’t really propel the main story forward it was a great look at his character.

“I don’t want to see it, but I do.” You just summed up the duality of the show. It makes you mad while making you curious. It makes you sad while making you happy. Watching your reactions have brought me as close to watching this show for the first time as anything can. Thank you!

Indeed. Athough with her speed, I think FLG will finish the series first even though Chris started earlier, IIRC. :)

Thank you as always Chris 😘 A while back I mentioned extended scenes from the arrival back on New Caprica - in them, we get Dualla talking to Lee directly about the connection between he and Kara. Dee always knew that attraction was something Lee had no control over, and that she was the second choice. Back when Lee proposed, she expressed clearly that she'd have him for as long as Starbuck let her. Obviously, the intervening time made Dee more resentful of the situation and her feelings are valid, but no-one can say her eyes weren't open. As much as I adore her character, there's also a dynamic that gets lost in the Kara/Lee drama. Dualla mentions it early in this season - that Lee's similarity to his father *is why she married him* Dee has flaws as a spouse too, she looks for Lee to be more like Bill, and the more Lee matures the more he diverges from the og Adama, Lee doesn't match the one Dualla has in her head. As for Gaius - WELL. His storyline this season is breathtaking. I know you're several episodes ahead, so you will be in the midst of what Tom Zarek prophesied in regards to a public trial for those who collaborated during the occupation. I'm VERY much looking forward to hearing your thoughts as that gets displayed.

This show... Such a great revisiting to the series with a modern take.... Every actor and actress is on point, and James Callas is just brilliant. Wait until you get to the last season. No reading ahead! But feel free to increase your viewing frequency.... You will not be mad.

I feel like people often act like you can either be victim or a perpetrator, one or the other, but they are somehow incompatible. But I would say it is not only possible to be both at the same time, I would say that probably every single adult human that ever lived is both at the same time. And that is how I feel about Baltar too.

His actions back on Caprica before the fall are small potatoes. What he should have been grilled over was "Did you give a nuclear bomb to a tall, blonde Cylon model?" Except they had no information with which to form the question. That is Baltar's true irredeemable sin. As for the very messy relationships, I think it's always the case that writers should not reveal information when we want it, only when it's most dramatically effective. We wondered from day one if Gaius was a Cylon. We wonder from day one if they will reach Earth, if there is an earth. We wonder who are the final five. Lee, Kara, Dee and Sam are just 'one of those things.'

One of my favorite episodes I think is "HERO" to learn that we instigated the war was a great insight, instead of the cylons coming out of nowhere

I agree that Baltar is responsible for the attack since he knowingly gave away defense secrets to get laid… but I don’t think he is responsible for new caprica after the cylons arrived, surrender is definitely a power and decision that the president can do, and signing their death orders was actually done under duress not a willful act. Plus he knew the cylons were going to do whatever they wanted regardless of his decision. As a practical matter it’s an interesting idea to consider what would have happened to the colonies if Gaius hadn’t been duped. They would have likely found another way, the attack would still happen, Gaius would be dead… and Gaius (with insights from his cylon shaped inner thoughts) has actually been invaluable and arguably saved the fleet multiple times already. He helped gaita fix the problem in the defense code that allowed them to use their fighters and purge any other infected systems, he (for selfish reasons) identified the Olympic carrier as a threat, he identified the weak point of the cylon fuel base when the fleet was desperately low on fuel, he ‘solved’ the admiral Cain problem… and so on. Imo his worst crime is ironically one no one suspects him of at this point (though they really should have) which is giving the nuke to the cylon which led directly to the death of thousands and the occupation of New Caprica.

Lets not forget that Baltar gave a nuclear head to a Cylon (which killed a lot of people and point the cylons in the direction of New Caprica). For me, that's his worst "sin"

Definitely the biggest thing he intentionally did. After all, it is that nuclear warhead that led the Cylons to New Caprica I the first place.

I never wanted or shipped Starbuck and Apollo. I hated their “cheating” storyline. Kara never was in love with Apollo in my opinion. I think he was her connection to Zac and I think Apollo actually did love her. She’s toxic and Anders is better for her. I can’t really feel that bad for Dee because she did Billy wrong when she moved on to Apollo. They way she did it was kinda Karma for ya. But it everyone’s defense there are so few people around that you find someone to have a relationship with you want to make it work because there aren’t enough people to go around so grab someone or be alone. There is a lot of settling going on. And it creates problems. I think Chief was feeling some settling going on with Callie since he couldn’t have his Sharon.

I don’t think that Starbuck ever loved Anders. Our mentions why I believe she married him in a previous episodes. Comment section, to get to the point, people don’t always marry or stay in long-term relationships with someone simply because they are better for them. If that was the case, I would have married my best friend who is a woman. Love and relationships,-why we humans choose who we do-is a bit more complicated than that simplistic viewpoint. One thing that Starbuck and Lee share is a deep understanding of each other. While very different people they are at least on the same level, Anders and Starbucks? Lee and Dee? Both of them have very little in common. Neither of those relationships seem too much deeper than skin deep. I do think that both Anders and Dee could have easily been replaced with other people, it was just a matter of timing and circumstance.

Yeah, I have to agree about your thoughts related to the state of the character-relationships. I'm not sure if you're ever going to go back to the original series (probably not, but if so, won't spoil that), but I wonder if the show-runners felt they had some obligation to pay off or further develop certain character-interactions from the original show in a particular way in the context of the Reimagined Series that would strike a chord with fans of both. But, then, maybe the result was something that just doesn't feel 100% believable or natural & leads them to use flashbacks to excess and whatnot. Not sure.

You gave me words for why I don't like "Unfinished Business".. Manipulated. There's a reference in 3x1 about Starbuck and Apollo having some trouble between them (when Tigh tells her to contact Apollo for medicine for Anders) but never says what it is, so I guess that was our clue. But still. Either way, I like this episode. I think the tie in between the two plots is about intent and perspective. The difference between intent and what is happening. Three relationships (counting Chief and Callie in this even though they only briefly get a mention) where maybe there's some disconnect in their thinking. I think Lee genuinely loves and cares for Dee, and it's probably a more healthy love, except that it's tainted by this toxic thing with Starbuck.

I definitely remember that and scene and I had just figured they hadn’t dealt with the fallout from their last interaction when she was so cruel introducing him to Anders. I actually don’t mind the story, it has been a fairly interesting dynamic to the season, but I definitely wish I hadn’t spent 10 episodes adjusting to their marriages without knowing what was really going on.

Same! I actually like the messy relationships in this series, because it feels real and very human. I can appreciate that they didn't bog the plot down in a soap opera, but a little more happening would have been nice. And definitely not enough of a problem to change my love for the show!

I've never cared for the Lee/Kara romantic subplot, but I'll play devil's advocate with the assertion that the writers retroactively created the affair to make us upset with the characters: after the S2 timejump, when we check in with everyone before the Cylons arrive, it is made abundantly clear that Lee and Kara had a massive falling out. We just aren't told what it was until Unfinished Business. And while infidelity didn't need to be the explanation they went with, their tension/attraction had already been established, so it wasn't out of left field. Just one of the less interesting options they could have gone with.

Not so sure about the surrender. Can one be guilty of surrender? And honestly what other option did he have? The two warships already retreated, he had no weapons to challange air superiority or the proper mechanical cylons at his disposal. I didn't see a militia trying to opose the Cylons marching into his office. Refusal to surrender might have lead to a much worse scenario. But yes he is guilty of collaboration after the surrender (though to what degree he was under duress is kind of open to debate as is his sanity). Treason before the first cylon attack though he is certainly guilty of that. No he isn't guilty of treason with the intent to sell out humanity to the Cylons. But he let someone who didn't have clearance have accsess to information, facilities and so on he had clearance to. And then he used their work in a project that was critical to the security of the colonies. He did all of that intentional for his own benefit. Thus treason. Proof though is basically impossible unless he confesses (which he will never do). On the question whether some stuff was intended, but cut. Sometimes yes. But other times it is just good writeing. Why? Because it is natural to think that you are unique with your problems until you talk to someone and find out you are not.
@Velanteg
@Velanteg 8 ай бұрын
Treason is always intent. Without intent its criminal negligence. Truth that Baltar never wanted to harm anyone except some critical situations when he saved more lives by killing one - when Crashdown and Cain were too dangeroues to people. And yep giving nuke to known cylon was madness. He could at least rig it. Cloud Nine really his responsibility, he should understand possible consequences. On New Caprica he have no choise at all. None of his actions could prevent things from happen. And not Baltar or even cylons started violence - it was Tigh. Tigh responsible for those casualties. I would not now talk futher now about how MUCH Tigh responsible actually. But his resistance command started bad things.
