Fun fact, the multiple short episodes format is actually a lot more similar to how Classic Who used to function. In classic who one story would be split across 4-8 episodes filmed to fit a far shorter weekly time slot. As you can imagine, watching week by week the seasons last a lot longer. A part of me wishes they would go back to it in all honesty, paradoxically the shorter episodes allows longer stories to be more commonplace.

I enjoyed SJA. It’s for kids, and still feels like Dr Who. Very much so. Torchwood is dark enough that it doesn’t feel like it’s in the doctor who universe to me. I’m really glad you are doing SJA. There are some characters that I would love to see on regular who. “We all get it wrong. Constantly”. What relief I felt I my late teens when I realized that! Remember Slithern is a family surname, not a species. The Slitheen are a massive crime family, from raxicofalipatorious (I’m sure I misspelled that).

While the Slitheen are better suited to a kids show I do think they are worse here. The actors are camping it up to ludicrous levels. Thankfully the actual character work and development for our heroes is really strong in this story.

Replacing Kelsey with Clyde is an instant improvement. I'm not sure how the show would have even worked without him. I mean Sarah, Maria and Kelsey can't teach Luke how to be a boy. You need another boy in the main cast to both be his mentor and opposite.

I'm glad you chose to watch both episodes in one reaction sitting- it will work much better that way! How did Clyde know all the school locations were at the ends of tubelines? If you lived in London then you would recognise that information. It's part of London 101.

Sarah Jane & the Fourth Doctor were my first pairing and she remains one of my favorite companions. It was good to see her so many years later step back into the role as a more mature character who has lived alone for many years but suddenly discovering the world through the eyes of teens.

sarah jane says a friend once said "Slitheen in downing street". This a reference to one of the things rose said during their argument where they keep listing to each other what aliens they've each encountered with the doctor. This episode also features the fictional news reporter Trinity Wells on tv. She made her first appearance in the Slitheen two parter in doctor and was also used in the Christmas Invasion and Sound of Drums.

I believe the official reason they replaced Kelsey with Clyde was to better gender balance the ensemble, but I suspect that another reason may be that reviewers found her too irritating. Also, something interesting with the formatting of two, half hour episodes making one story is not dissimilar to the formatting of classic who, aside from a single series it was 30 minuite episodes that formed multi part stories, typically in later years 4 part stories, but they were longer in earlier seasons. It would not surpries me if the series was formatted this way as a homage to that.

I'm happy to see you enjoy this story so much. For me it is rarely as as apparent as it is here that I'm not the target audience of the show. You're right: It does make sense for a kids programme to bring back the fart aliens. Luckily for me, SJA has way better stories in store then this one and I can't wait to see you explore them.

When you finish Torchwood and SJA (gods, that'll be so far in the future) you should check out another Doctor Who spinoff called Class. It's a story about students in a school but it's gritty and dark and mature at the same time, meaning it's truly like a Torchwood/SJA hybrid, which is so weird given how tonally opposite they both are. Sadly cancelled after one season but still fun.

I'm sure someone told you already but all of Sarah Jane Adventures up to the end of series 3 happened before the end of time specials which come after Doctor who series 4 I think Clyde is an infinitely better character than Kelsey so I never missed her. I remember watching all of this live and the stories being all split into two parts was equal parts great and maddening 😅

@@CasualNerdReactions Ah, gotcha! Just making sure. I'm watching through it all with a friend who hasn't seen it, and we're pretty much perfectly synced with you by pure coincidence right now (though I'm sure not for long), just need to start SJA with him next time c: I can very much relate on the struggle of making the schedule. I went to the trouble of making a Google Doc in advance to get the order down correctly, it took quite a while to get perfect, and I still need to make adjustments!

The Slitheen are silly, but I've actually always really liked the design of the Raxacoricofallapatorians. The horizontal blinking is cool, the few details we get of their hunter culture seem interesting, and there's some solid practical costume work in some scenes. I love all of the arcs for the main trio in this show, but since he wasn't in the pilot I'll call some attention to my boy Clyde. I love how in this episode he learns that "cool" is what you make it rather than what everyone else makes it, and that something doesn't have to be popular to be cool, so he ultimately decides to be friends with Luke and Maria after being quite rude initially. Just a good little bit of believable growth for a teenage character, and it's well acted by Daniel Anthony. Sarah Jane and Luke figuring out the whole mother and son dynamic is also really sweet and earnest, it warms my heart.

I struggle to pick a favourite character (I think it might just be Luke, if only by a hair's breadth, but I also love Sarah Jane herself), but I agree with you that for such a young actor at the time this was made, Daniel Anthony is so talented!

That's funny, because Luke was my first crush as a kid. Ultimately I have to agree Clyde the best character in SJA for me as well (and I would say that if I only knew season 1 as well so no spoilers if he sticks around the entire show from me). Maybe that's partly just because I always saw him as such an upgrade to Kelsey who annoyed me the whole pilot episode 😅

Fun fact: The last surviving passenger onboard the RMS Titanic, Millvina Dean, lived to see this episode. After she saw the ending scene from The Last of the Time Lords, where the bow of the ship crashes into the TARDIS, she got upset because she thought the show was going to be using the real Titanic and found it disrespectful to her father and to everyone else who had died that day. A Doctor Who spokesperson contacted her to assure her that the show would, in fact, not be depicting the real ship.

I've seen this film dozens of times over the years and it has never failed me, I ALWAYS laugh, I usually catch some new clue or nuance in the script, and I remain duly impressed at the talent of the Coen's to, once again, craft a script so convoluted yet so simple that it is high science, pure art. There is an entire subculture now around The Dude (Dudeism) , it's all a joke and everyone is in on it but they're also serious about it. Abide.

Too bad Bannakaffalatta and Astrid couldn't get married. Maybe in the stars. Wish they had saved the name Astrid (a TARDIS anagram). I think I would have liked less death in this episode (It's not like It's the original Titanic) and if Martha had stayed on for one more adventure.
