When I played battletech (3025 era) What you referred to as "cavalry" we called insurgency. We would form lances of nothing but Trebuchets, Griffins, Valkyries, etc. These lances would engage in hit-and-run tactics where they would engage the enemy force (or just targets of opportunity) at maximum range for a few turns before fleeing or breaking off the engagement. This counter-tactic was especially effective in longer term engagements, where enemy forces could be harassed slowly over time, wearing down heavier, slower Assault lances or trying to get the enemy to split his forces in order to pursue your insurgency lance. In this way it could be a potent psychological tactic too, trying to get the enemy to break discipline, become impatient, or lose their cool.

For the Longbow, you probably just want LRM carriers in the role that mech fills tbh, unless you need the mobility of the mech. You can take 2 LRM carriers for the cost of 1 longbow, and they have over twice as many missiles! I don't like direct fire LRM mechs too much honestly. If I have a direct fire tanky unit, I usually want bigger weapons like Gauss or big lasers/PPCs. The reason being, LRMs are cluster weapons, and the big direct fire weapons are great at opening up components. So you have 2-3 turns of firing the big guns, and then your more efficient crit-seekers like SRMs, Medium laser spam, etc already have a target with open components to start critting out. If you do want to go for an indirect fire(IDF) strategy, taking a couple units with TAG is really helpful. It generally reduces penalties for the firing unit by *alot.* I covered iNarc recently in a video as well, which is an incredible tool to build a powerful IDF lance around. Get your fast scouts in, drop iNarc on something, and then just soak that unit with LRMs while they can't fire anything back at you. Even standard narc is pretty good. Last thought is that I really like MMLs instead of LRMs. They lose most of their long range firepower, but having a unit that isn't useless once the enemy closes is amazing. Clan LRMs don't have this issue as well, so that makes them very good IMO.

TAG is great, or taking a scout VTOL as a spotter if you have room in your list. Kurita has some of the best TAG mechs in lots of eras. Warhammer 7K for example.

@@TrailblazerBT The Savannah master is a great spotter as well, as it can maintain 4 TMM while walking for negligible BV. The Sprint TAG copter is amazing as well. Love them both haha. Units with incidental TAG like the 7K are ok. It doesn't really want to get into TAG range, though. There's lots of light scouts/backstabbers with TAG though, which is what I'd say you really want it on.

@@TheManyVoicesVA I like brawling units with incidental TAG if there's a cap on my force size though. Like in an MRC game I would often want the 7K instead of a VTOL

@@TrailblazerBT absolutely. It is also a great bodygaurd/sniper that can hang out with your LRM units to discourage people from getting close lol

The trade off of the crit seekers you mentioned is usually the range bracket they are best in. LRM's crit seek poorly, but do so from some of the longest range in the game. I fee like LRM's do suffer a bit farther down the timeline due to tech upgrades, but there's still use for them. LRM carriers are super good, but they are nerfed by being vehicles, and for some people they'd rather avoid playing with anything more than mechs and maybe the occasional battle armor. (I specifically like the Crusader as it carries all the crit seek for both ranges with LRMs, SRMs, and M-lasers.)

appreciate the map image with the mechs in question on it, using your cursor to "shift ping" or something similar on the map as you speak could help to point out details as needed, please consider this constructive criticism, I like your videos

I don't disagree but really have to say that one should not be crazy with BV on missile boats. The catapult really should be the upper limit and longbows are just way too much of a waste of resources. Makes an archer really impractical imho also. The dervish is highly underrated and is one of the few designs where SRM2 actually works. Not just rear shots but a mech with a damaged side that is twisting away from your line to protect some juicy crits works well also. Trebuchet, Whit worth, even the twin LRM10 hunchback.. well especially the twin LRM10 hunchback.. dont eat up BV and can do the job.

STK-5M. Lightly modified. Get rid of the stupid NARC, switch places of LRM and SRM launchers. It will outlive you. It will outfight you. When you get behind it, it has more Firepower to throw at you than most heavy mechs have out the front.

Good video. Beautiful maps. Would the Dervish jump into direct line of sight to fire srms lasers and lrms at the mechs and jump back to avoid counter attacks? Would Griffins work well as calvary lrm flankers?
@TrailblazerBT
@TrailblazerBT 2 ай бұрын
To your first question, you could do that with a Dervish late in the game but the 3025 Dervish is too poorly armored for that strategy to be worth the risk in most situations. Later higher-tech Dervishes could do it though. To question 2, the 3050 Griffin could do it well but the 3025 Griffin doesn't have enough LRMs for it.

One does want to do a similar thing with a Griffin though, you can pull off a direct-fire long range flanking maneuver like the one I describe in my video about the Falconer

What is the point of indirect fire? It takes two units and has low chance to ever hit. I would just walk right into it and close.
@jamesoliver2542

Simple .. you don't get shot back at. You have a chance to hit, but they can't return fire. So it's worth it.

Being able to shoot from behind cover and not in line of sight can be very powerful advantage if used wisely. This is most obviously seen with the likes of the LRM Carrier, as it is an extremely cheap for its BV tank that is rather squishy. Throw in a TAG or a NARC and suddenly you have the firepower of a few assaults at a fraction of the cost that can not be shot back.

The Derwish you want to switch the LRM10's for LRM6's and the SRM2s for SRM4's At 5/8/5 that is a horrible brawler that can maim mechs twice its size.

LRM 6's or 5's? Or you mean SRM 6's making it a pure SRM boat?

Yeah it's a passably good hand to hand fighter, sad that you can't fire the MLs and punch but you want to kick usually anyway

Or you just hot-load the missiles and suddenly someone will be very sorry for trying to bother the LRM boat up close.

For once i disagree the Dervish is simply a bad mech do yourself a favour and dont take it . If you insist on taking it stand it at the back and use it for indirect fire , it can defend itself from lights/fast movers as well thats about it , if anything else approaches jump away . But you could save yourself 150 odd BV and get a Whitworth to do the same thing without storing ammo in the arms and being able to survive a medium laser to the back
@TrailblazerBT

I agree that a lot of the time a Whitworth is better
