BATTLETECH Battle Report | Pirates vs Capellan Confederation | ilClan Era | Override

The Capellan planet of Amnesty sits on the perilous border of Magistracy space, and thus the Confederation frequently bolsters the local planetary militia with battle-hardened mercenaries. Even still, crafty pirates are a regular sight on the border world.
A small group of fast-moving freebooters, deploying from an unmarked (presumably stolen) merchant dropship, have just looted and raised a local ammunition depot and are racing to get off world.
However, elements from the Old Kentucky Chargers mercenary unit - on a long-term garrison contract - are on a direct intercept course, blocking the pirates' escape…

Override is now my favorite way to play, though I do play a little more on the classic side. Basically we use override to smooth out some of the humps and bumps of classic. For example we play on hex maps and use classic firing and hit arcs. To speed things up, we roll multiple pairs of colored dice at once. The dice are colored blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. They are resolved top to bottom in 'heat' order (blue first and ending with red) and are automatically assigned from top to bottom to the TICs. So if you roll 3 TICs and happen to pick up green, orange, and red, green is assigned to TIC1, orange to TIC2, and red to TIC3. No need to declare or debate it. Makes shooting very fast. Anyways, love the system.

I'm really looking forward to more Override content! I just started the actual wargaming side of Battletech in February this year and I blame you guys for the emptiness of my wallet. But since then, I've been playing Destiny exclusively and now that some of the nice Hextech terrain arrived at my house, I'm looking forward to try the improved Override! That said: What I would love to get is an explanation video about infantry, or just a part in a tutorial video that explains infantry better. I can't really wrap my head around what the rulebook says and how the override card looks. But I'm still waiting on my full AS rulebook, so maybe that will clear things up. But all kinds of tutorial video would be great, so that I can show it to people and do some advertising for the system!

With the current size of the channel I think it's awesome that you can still engage with the comments in some manner and have a relatively personal connection with viewers. The crux of it is probably people's emotional investment and experiences with Classic, so disagreement over whether it is good or enjoyable is kinda to be expected. Also this is still KZbin so you're probably best off putting on some nuclear waders before getting stuck in with the comment section any which way you flip it. On a more practical note: thanks for doing these. Always lovely to see more batreps and Override looks to be genuinely interesting as a halfway point between Alpha Strike and Classic

Okay. After a long delay, now we're in the space between the end of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi phases of the Dan redemption arc. Thom is still frozen in carbonite. Dan has a new hand, but it doesn't really roll dice any better. Our heroes are at their lowest-est point. Even lower than than at the end of Empire Strike Back. We don't really know what's going on during this in-between phase, but there is a 78 page Reddit fanfic that has Aaron just hanging out on the new Death Star sipping on a Capri Sun that is pretty compelling.

I get the steamlining and simplification of the game to expedite play, but hear an A/C 10 delivering 4pts of damage, makes me cry. 😢😅 BTW your initial brief describes the primary objective as destruction of enemy mechs, but your turn reviews give the option of secondary objectives (unstated). Should say, Override is really good. I liked it more, when it was possible to join up to 3 med. lasers, for 2 makes not thaaat much a difference, but it was a little bit too much with head hitting, I get it. Still, I wish this to be released as a separate rulebook. Good job.

I wish you would show the movement, it would really help us to see where the units are and what tactics or strategy you are using. Plus it would feel less static as we are just setting the die rolls. I’m liking the sound of these rules, I might have to give them a go. Something as quick to move as Alpha strike, but with some of the granularity of individual weapons and hit locations of classic.

I think if you post edit did a top down camera shot with arrows/paths drawn nicely to show starting and end points of movement. A live shot of movement phase would also the video down too long.

love the override system! still not a fan of 1/1 conversion for ranges and movement, i prefer doubling everything as in alpha strike stock rules. And hey! the pirates finally got one :), the little pirate kids getting some full bellies and sweet loot tonight!

I only played 3 games of Alpha Strike but the big ranges ruined a lot of fun for us. A fast clan mech being behind you in 2 turns and no way of really „trapping“ a mech in a bad position like in classic ruined a lot of the strategic fun for us.

@VictorSteiner I find that the one to one hamstrings light mechs. Unable to quickly find cover and sole relying on tmm to survive really hurts them. Vehicles suffer doubly so because of the increased difficulty in traversing terrain.

Please do a refreshed more in depth battle grid set up. The original is good but to... "Summarized". Ive watched it over and over and my battle grids dont turn out as good. Either you're the artisan of your craft or my pieces are too big and i make the map too crowded? Do you have a formula in your head for spacing between hills/size of foam (width x length)?

To be fair, they typically use blasters in Star Wars instead of lasers. We don't know the physical properties of blasters, so they might be affected by gravity. Also, light bends in gravity, so technically, lasers can arc.

TMM? unless there's been a radical change in range modifiers, none of your to-hit numbers don't make any sense to me ( short 4. med 6. long 8 + movement / partial cover / etc. then subtract pilot skills

Ah yes 😁 so since 93 there has been a BT game called Alpha Strike - where an entire ‘mech is abstracted into a simple stat block. It facilitates fast games and/or large scale engagements at the expense of detail. This flavor that you are watching is based on CGL’s MechWarrior: Destiny RPG mech combat system. It’s been expanded by DFA to blend elements of Alpha Strike and called “Override”. It sits somewhere between Classic and Alpha Strike in terms of detail and speed of play.
