I love that the Ost- series is getting some spotlight. They've been criminally under-represented for being machines that every house has in decent numbers.

I've always loved the heavier Ost-series mechs. I prefer the Ostsol over the Ostroc, (Forget the Ostwar, it's junk) but that said, both of them are neat little mechs in that 60-ton weight class. Where I think they really shine is in the 3025 versions, by the time of 3050 upgrades you end up with garbage weapons like the ER Large.

For a relatively speedy mech with good heat management like this variant of the Ostroc, I actually kind of like the ER Large Lasers. I feel like the ER LL gets a bad rap from when FASA pretty much put them in everything 3039 and beyond without considering whether or not a standard LL made more sense. Don’t get me wrong, it’s rarely the ideal option but it is a reasonable weapon for light, fast harassers which might have to sacrifice too much to fit an ER PPC’s weight

Great analysis as always :-) a mech ive fought against a lot as I have an opponent who lives the ost mechs...they are surprisingly tough to be fair and hit harder than their looks suggest...I think they are the last kid to be picked for football that win you the game :-)

Yes, I have run the Ostroc. In the 3025 and 3050 models I would run smoke rounds in the SRM-4 for heavy smoke. The Project Phoenix mini is the one I own. It’s a good performance mech. The first time this mech came out in City Tech I thought it was uninteresting. Man, every game I play with the Ostroc has changed my mind. Good mech. Works well in the Ost-series of mechs and in urban fights. That SRM can come in clutch and ether take care of infantry or vehicles with infernos. Nice review of the mech DFA.

For the longest time I refused to use any of the Ost' mechs. Just so goofy looking. Once I finally had to use one they performed pretty well. Excellent brawlers that could close well and evade anything bigger. That 5/8 lets you get some really good kicks in on slower mechs without taking a kick in return. Remember, "He who lands the most kicks usually wins."

This was my story as well. I’ve really grown to love them recently. While I still haven’t had luck with the Ostscout (more through unreasonably bad luck than anything with the mech itself), I’m looking forward to get all the others in the series.

Have all 3 of the original Ost series mechs from 30 years ago. Ostscout is good for RP or flavor mech. Ostroc and Ostsol are surprisingly punchy and survivable. Upgraded Ostsol moves 6/9 making it more fragile, but harder to hit. Ostroc is just annoyingly tough to kill.

Nice mech review! The first BT mini I bought was an Ostroc, and I made my decision purely on aesthetics. 😎
@lesjames24789 ай бұрын
The ostroc has a lot of solid varients for BT and several that are solid 35ish PV for alpha strike. They are cost effective in both classic and alpha strike which makes them good line units to include when fleshing out a force
@TheManyVoicesVA7 ай бұрын
Ostroc and Ostsol are *premium* heavy cavalry. They are so cheap on BV because they have so little overall armor. But the crazy thing is it is *way more survivable* than a Dragon which has 1 ton of extra armor. It has way more effective firepower than the Dragon. Even the introtech versions with the single heat sinks are pretty good. If you use quirks they also have narrow/low profile, awesome on a 5/8 mech with 20+ armor on all the important locations. Love these big bois as heavy hitters in a cavalry lance.

@@DeathfromAboveWargaming one mech Id be interested to see would be the really weird slow TSM Ostsol. The 9R. I suspect that it's a decent juggernaut type unit. I think it might be quite good despite being fairly pricey on BV. A heavy PPC, snub PPC and large laser make it a heck of a mid range brawler. It's gonna be taking it on the chin with 3/5 or 4/6 with TSM actice though. But it is a heck of an objective holder, with great heat management to keep that TSM active.
@DeathfromAboveWargaming7 ай бұрын
@TheManyVoicesVA i find TSM to be so weird (in Classic) to use effectively!
@TheManyVoicesVA7 ай бұрын
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming It's a very weird mechanic. You need to have weapons of different heat amounts tp use it right. You also do NOT want ammo in the mech because an enemy can hit you with flamers and cause an ammo explosion. So energy boats with a bunch of lasers that produce different heat amounts at least 1 small laser preferably, are what you want. You have to fire them at the ground if enemies aren't in range. The melee damage is serioisly good, but you also give up the accuracy of your guns. So it's a weird trade off. You pay the battle value for the extra speed, but dont get to always use it. So it's best to use mechs that are 5/8 and go to 6/9 so that you dont pay for the 7/11 BV tax. Theres a few mechs like the no-dachi and Thunderbolt-60-RLA that are pretty badass. I ought to make a video on the best TSM mechs...

I will take any ostroc or Ostsol that you do not want ! I love the series. Its speed is the difference, it has no xl engine to drop and in close you can fire all your weapons and still punch with both arms. A true diamond in the rough.
@HouseDavieMerc9 ай бұрын
Great video thanks! I can't wait for the Osts in the kickstarter. I prefer the mini for the Ostroc, but prefer the no ammo Ostsol for 3025 games. Post 3050 I always wanted an upgraded Ostsol OTL-4F. The original has 2 PPCs. A 3050 upgrade with double heat sinks and 2 ER PPCs would have been fantastic but we never got one. In 3025 the twin PPC Ostsol can be a fun mech to play because they never know when you'll alpha strike and the 5/8 movement forces them to guard their backsides from it.

My headcanon on the Ost series is that they're kind of like an Apple brand of mechs- everything proprietary, more expensive, but very high-end and luxurious.

I like the Ostsol over the Roc, but the 3025 versions cant be that much worse for efficiency. Might explain why i always liked them. Honestly just think rhe thunderbolt and the 55 tonners take away the spotlight. No idea why the dragon is more liked - other than being a combine mainstay. Two ostsols and a wolverine with your choice for a 4th and it is a solid battleline.

I am chomping at the bit to get one in my St Ives Lancers force. It looks like it can really play the field; pouncing on LRM bopats, playing keep away from Hunchbacks and hitting them with the Large Lasers until you are ready to strike. It also has Narrow/Low Profile if you play with quirks. This means you only crit it on a 10+ and any hits right on the money or by 1 pt do half damage, making it even more survivable.
