So a 75 ton crab to finish the cycle? Standard 300 Vlar engine to give it the standard 4/6 movement and keep it cheap. Endo Steel frame because we need some weight savings. 10 double heat sinks because its cheap and super efficient. 2 light PPCs in the claws. 2 more medium pulse lasers in the torso. Triple Strength Myomer, enough small pulse lasers to make an elemental cry. Call it the Crab Boil, because it runs hot! Pilots entire goal is to close to keep the TS Myomer burning and get into melee. Even without a weapon mod this drops two 15 damage punches on the melee table. That is a 1/3rd chance to heat shot a mech every round. Use all the extra weight to pile on armor.

I love this Mech. The Hermit Crab slots into any powers' light lances, and works especially well with the Periphery powers' focus on liight fire support or trooper scout lances. I like it. It feels more closely related to its 50-ton cousin than its 100-ton patriarch. It's a perfect low budget garrison mech, leave lances of them at whatever outpost they'll be operating from to train and master the local terrain while helping develop the facilities, then when it comes time to defend the planet the Lance can function as the scouts and local liaisons to the properly armed regular units that arrive to execute the main battles. That takes advantage of how flexible and easy to integrate they are without creating a situation where their utility functions are never used and their modest combat potential is overtaxed because they're being used as front line mechs.

Of all the Dark Age/Republic era mechs, this is probably my favorite. Small, cheap, a less able version could have been made in 3025 (DHS is the only LosTech you really need) and the fact the lore includes rings for slinging loads and the claws can grab pallets makes this a wonderfully complete mech in an setting where a lot of designs don't seem realistically thought out. Militia, mercs and guerillas all like it. As far as how to make it "more aggressive", in it's era ClanTech (🤢) is available, and you've got the sinking to manage CERMLs. Even with a markup for that them, it is pretty cheap as it becomes the crab that eats bugs.

It's all well and good when you can kill a heavy mech in a single salvo with your average mech - but what happens when you face off against a lance of these things because they are that much cheaper and simpler. Any damage your advanced mech takes will require extended periods of repair and refit. Nah, we need a Dropship Cancer class with reinforced self-loading cargo claws. Like a crab hydra, but arms instead of heads.

Im surprised there isnt a version with a flame thrower/MG if its a garrison/policing mech something intended for anyone who needs a cheap mech to police a troublesome populace that might not be particularly well armed. Something to respond to infantry and light vehicles from somewhere you recent took over or for any other similar tyrannical need.

Stone Crab? Dual arm mount Snub Nose PPCs, Dual Light PPCs in torsos, Dual Medium Lasers in center torso, Endosteel, 18 DHS, standard engine, 4 standard JJ with 4/6/4 movement, 14 tons standard armor, easy maintenance quirk, 75 tons. I spent to much time thinking it up before realizing it's just a grasshopper 7K. You could take 3 SN PPC instead though...

Now this is how you make a scout mech, I wonder why there is no variant with a SPL or a Flamer to see off infantry. I would argue that as a scout mech it wants the ability to attack infantry effectively more than a third er medium but could see the arguments either way.

I want a slower version of this thing with a back mounted shield and some melee quirks. That would be 👌

A Lance of Hermit Crab variants could raise a lotta hell. If/when they make 75 ton variant, they should name it the Devil Crab, after the most ill-tempered crustacean in the sea: the Atlantic Blue Crab.

Hermit Crab II, 35 tons, 2 ER medium lasers, 4 flamers, 7 tons of armor.

All I'd really consider doing is swapping the lasers for quad Clan ER Smalls or a pair of Clan ER Mediums.

Ayyy, thanks for the like! It just sounds to me like with it's high mobility, fantastic cooling, and great-for-it's-size armor, a quartet of Clan ER Smalls doubles the damage potential, turning it into a nasty bouncing little backstabber.
