BATTLETECH: The Hollander

Perhaps one of the coolest mechs to come from TRO: 3055, the #Hollander was built in response to the #ClanInvasion, and was built and used by the #FederatedCommonwealth and later the #LyranCommonwealth. This #HouseSteiner 35 tonner is an incredible sniper when handled well. Armed with a mighty #GaussRifle, this is one #Battlemech not to be messed with.

The Hollander always held a special place for me because it was the only Ral Partha metal mini that I had. I saw it in a comic book store on a rare trip into the city when I was 12. When I got to the cash I didn't quite have enough money to buy it, but the owner of the store was impressed that a kid my age played BattleTech so he gave it to me for free. It's those little things that stay with you for life.

@@ryandow6953 The Hunchback's cannon is protected by 20 armor pips, face only has 12 total so i'm gonna assume that's your target. they're built for different fights. relatively open terrain is gonna give it to the Hollander. But if the Hunchie catches the Hollander in a city, it's a bad time. Because the Hollander needs to nail the cockpit, but the Hunchie will blow out any part it hits with the Big Iron.

Lynx and Hunter were my guys! Oh man, brings back memories. That mission sucked, you had to escort the APC. Played a d/l’d version at one point and it’s possible to go the opposite way I believe and go northeast and arty/face the Hollander first, but then you run the risk of the commandos hurting you later

The Gun so Fun it grew legs to dance with. The Hollander is niche, but in that niche it reigns supreme for it's era. Supporting a medium lance or in the right light lance, it's a fearsome support 'mech, holding back behind its allies and taking potshots from afar. Even supporting a heavy lance it's a 'mech to respect. But that's the thing, it's a *support* platform. You run it unto a fight, and the Hollander's going to die. But, skulking around, lining up shots on priority targets and choosing it's fights, the Hollander can be a terror.

The Hollander is a one-trick pony, but it really knows its trick! This design makes sense, in its role as a stopgap response to the Clanners. Slap the Omni Mech at range with accurate, powerful fire that will smash through the thickest armor, and one-shot light-armored targets. Have a couple of comrades to block attempts to rush the Hollander. Repeat and rinse until the Clanners retreat or are destroyed. I must agree the Pack Hunter is a sort of evolution from the Hollander.

I just recently got into mech building in megameklab, and your videos have influenced many of my designs. Hearing you in my head describe the trade offs of my mechs gives me a second perspective and I think makes them better. one in particular I have poured time into not just the design, but the fluff and lore. I went and found a planet and factory that could make it, and used existing equipment and parts available to that factory. I also wrote out capabilities and deployment histories for it and its variants; explaining the reason for its creation and its (potential) history in combat. It has flaws, it has strengths, but most of all it has character.

Needs an ECM, which is going to cost tonnage. Suggest installing a Light Gyro, and possibly downgrading to a Light Cockpit. Although the Stealth system may well trap enough heat that you might be forced to install DHS.

One my favorites. This thing is terrific, light mech that punches way above its weight class. Love weapon platform mechs, especially the little guys. Like the Kit Fox with a gauss or an Urbanmech with an AC/20, it is simply good times.

As someone who despises ammunition based weaponry with some minor exceptions (ac-2, lrms, and ac-20) I find myself actually liking this mech…yes it uses ammunition, yes it has a bomb strapped to the mech in the form of the Gauss rifle. Regardless of all that, much like the AC-20 the fight ending potential of the Gauss rifle via headshot makes this mech always a worthwhile choice. Honestly the only upgrade I would consider on the mech is the addition of an xl engine (normally a very bad idea) and reinvesting the saved weight into a bigger engine in order to give it more speed.

Which would be moderated if the excess mass is actually caused by an additional leg that improves the mech's capability to bear its own weight. It's not additional mass caused by torso armor we'd be talking about here. And since legs move one by one, the engine/reactor being too small-bore would also be no problem - even more so when you can actually support _more_ mass and thus, a heavier reactor with an additional leg.

I was bored and made a 60-ton Hollander IV variant. Same signal Gauss Rifle, and 2 tons of ammo, the improvements are an IS 325 Light Engine, 4 improved Jump Jets, compact Gyro, and armor marked up to 10 tons. For the cost of 11,320, 960 c-bills. This was funny because a friend of mine runs a VTTG and the players have 80-ton Clan mechs. They were stomping his missions. So he threw my Hollander IV at them and clipped two of the players 80-ton mechs out of their cockpits and they were forced to retreat from the mission for the first time. Thanks to the two clan mechs, They were stripped for another upgraded variant of the Hollander IV Variant. With a Clan XL 325 Engine, Clan endo steel, and Ferro-Fibrous, (Which knocked the tonnage usage down to 52 out of 60 tons and Crit slots to 63 out of 78.) With new C-DHS, C-Gauss rifle, 3 C-MED Pulse Lasers, and ECM. The mech's heat/cooling: 16/20 Thanks to these recovered Clan mechs, it was enough to retrofit 4 Hollander IV's mechs! lol, and yes they went up against the players and won 4 times in a row before the players just gave up on the mission to capture/destroy a HPG outpost. Out of the 4 retrofits on one was destroyed and another mech was half destroyed.

Forgot this thing even existed, but I do remember someone saying that my 4 legged 100 ton Artillery/Aim support mech resembled it. I can see why and honestly I can tell where and why this thing would shine the brightest. Definitely something you want to use to protect your Artillery and hold the line at bay/coral the enemy as you pound then with the heavy stuff.

I recently had one of these in BTA 3062. It kicked a serious amount of ass for a long time until I got a royal champion with a gauss rifle. Only popped a few cockpits with it over 40 or so missions, but that thing had a hatred for right arms. You could be on the left side of a cicada and still remove the right arm. The Hollander: Because the urban mech is too slow, and the hunchback can't find AC20 ammo.

My favorite Hollander refits are the ones that stuff it full of Clan weapons and electronics on an IS frame. A Clan ER PPC, a pair of Clan SSRM2s and a ton of ammo, IS TAG, Clan ECM/Probe, and a Clan Targeting Computer with IS Endo, maxed out Ferro, and Double Heat Sinks is a ferocious hunter-killer for under 3.5m C-bills. You could drop the electronics for a bigger engine or jump jets if you're into that, but I prefer them.

Faced a periphery force in BTA3062 featuring a Hollander variant with a Sniper Cannon. It rocked my Locust’s rear armor on a miss and caused me some inconvenience. And then it accidentally shot it’s own ally, a Panther… right in the back. The Panther survived but a little more punishment from me coerced the pilot into ejecting.

To be fair, the Pack Hunter was a Clan Wolf-in-Exile design, so the other clans like to denigrate bot hthe Hollander AND the Pack Hunter as well as any notion that the clans had copied the one from the other in the first place. But realistically, the Hollander is so overspecialized that is struggles to be anything else but a sniper, which, objectively speaking, is good as it will deter its pilots from trying other things. And the commanders can gain the firepower and reach of the Gauss by a rather humble investment in Dropship tonnage space.

Ran a campaign on Mechwarrior RPG and TT BT using a team of Lyran criminal draftees all piloting Hollanders. I am not sure why but the head capping became so ridiculous that one time a ludicrous set of rolls saw them take out an entire trinary of Clan Jade Falcon omnis..

Shadow cat is the Hollander but with a pair of ER mediums and jump jets. Why would the clans be so afraid of something they already had a version of? It was a ground breaking idea for the inner sphere, yet something the clans had thought of 5 decades prior.

Well the clans had better tech, but the Inner Sphere had more industrial capacity and better ideas about using their guns.... sometimes. Point is that the Clans couldn't and wouldn't use 20 Hollander equivalents (like Shadow Cat or Kit Fox) behind cover to ambush 5 assaults without warning, focusing down one target at a time, killing the lead and trailer first to trap the rest. They especially wouldn't follow that up with repositioning to a new ambush point for gutting the next star.

The clans supremacy is built on better technology, not on being equal to the Inner Sphere in technology. Anything that reduces the gap in technology considerably is an issue for the clans. It’s like the Germans in WW2: imagine how they would have reacted if the USSR would have mass produced tiger tanks for the red army. Yes, in theory the Germans also had tigers and even a more advanced version. But looking at a way bigger amount of this monster on the opposing side wouldn’t really make it less of a catastrophe.

I remember my first time whit the hollander. Going from: the hell is this thing to holly hit it just one shot an atlas. Ever since then it will have my respect. The hollander is one of the few mech that have the "honor" of being kill on sight no mather what

So what you do is, you take two Hollanders, a Cerberus and an Axman. And you drop 1/2 pilots in everything, because the guy across from you wants to shove a daishi in their star. Keep that fighting retreat up, don't shoot with the axman, we really want him to forget it exists. No, he needs to forget harder. Just pump four gauss shots per turn into whatever he presents. but you keep that axman in full commando mode. he must forget the axman. He will see red eventually Usually the first time one of his mechs drops. He will recklessly charge. The axman, camouflaged, emerging from the river with its face-paint still intact; silently runs behind your oppositions prized Daishi. You open up with that lpl and ac/20 into the rear arc, and then slam that big ax home. Your opponent, foolishly will turn mechs around to shoot your axman, exposing their own tasty tasty backsides to your gauss wall. They never realize that you have already won. Or you just leave a Hollander hanging to get eaten by a Dasher or Koshi.

(Overheard in a mech hanger): Hollander: "Hey, guys. Looks like I'm the new 'go-to' sniper." Hunchback: "Friggin' show off. I've got heavier fire-power at short range." Hollander: "Yeah, I've heard about that 'coming up short' problem. Maybe see a good doctor?" Panther: "At least I don't run out of ammo for my primary weapon. AND I've got jump jets." Hollander: "How's that cockpit replacement coming along?" Atlas: "I swear to Kerensky that if you all don't shut up I'm going to have a 'live fire' accident." Edited to hopefully be a bit more funny. Ah, the Hollander. I learned about this mech first after showing my friend a dodgy refit of a Hunchback I did in MW5, taking out some armor, a medium laser, and the AC-20 to mount a Gauss Rifle I'd salvaged from a Hero Mech. Sure, designs like this suffer up close, but if you let something get close to it, you already failed as a mech-commander to support it.

Interesting stuff. I only knew of the Hollander as Sarna mentions the Blitzkrieg (a favourite of mine) as a replacement for the Hollander. I like the asymmetrical look of the Hollander👍

First time going over the TRO, the Hollander and the Venom became favorites that I would pair together. Even painted a company of mechs with those two in green and gold. At the time I didn't know anything about the factions and countered protests from my more learned battletech player by claiming it was a mercenary unit.

Currently playing a Battletech tabletop rpg. My merc company will probably be needing to buy a couple. Currently caught in the invasion corridor and all our guass rifles are on assault mechs. Through some AMAZING luck, we have a King Crab with double guass instead of the normal ac20. We were paid for one mission with a Royal SLDF Nightstar, a true relic with 2 guass rifles. And finally, we were scouted by some shady folks (probably Comstar) and had to duel the Dragoons. We beat them and forced a surrender. (Only 2 Dragoon pilots suvived engaging us) We got a Mad 5b out of it.

In actuality, you would get way more than just 10 Hollanders in true conversion. All ‘Mechs are built using the same weapon prices. I.E.: the total C-Bill cost of that mad cat prime is calculated based upon the premise that the clan ERLL’s cost the same as IS/SL ERLL’s. If you think you could actually find somebody “in universe” selling clan and IS ERLL’s for the same price, I have some magic beans you may be interested in…
